'It was the nicest looking pub in our area - it's such a shame it closed'

People in Arnold have been remembering a former pub that's due to be demolished after developers overcame a hurdle in the planning process. Plans to demolish the Friar Tuck pub, in Gedling Road, and replace it with a retirement living block were approved by Gedling Borough Council's planning committee in February 2025.
But the project has been delayed by six months, due to work needed to agree the financial contributions retirement communities developer McCarthy Stone needs to pay out for the local community.
With the £70,000 section 106 agreement now agreed, the redevelopment can now go ahead. But the news was met with dismay by people living nearby who spoke of fondness when recalling the former pub.

Arnold resident Dave Finch said he would 'rather have the pub back' as opposed to the apartments, saying: 'I do miss it – it was on my doorstep.' Jean Butt, 78, added: 'I think the whole thing [the redevelopment] is awful. It was the nicest looking pub in the area.
"My husband and I used to go in all the time and have a pint. The car park used to be full too. But these things happen. We don't know what issues we're going to have round here until they [flats] come.'
The pub was opened in 1958 by Daybrook brewery the Home Brewery Company but had been run by Greene King until its closure last year. The new retirement block is expected to comprise 51 apartments for those over 60.
Back in February's planning committee meeting, one nearby resident, Carol Ball, objected to the plans over the pub being part of Arnold's history and called the new apartment block 'another ugly, bland, modern building'.
A Gedling Borough council spokesperson said: 'Finalising this agreement took some time, which is normal for major applications. Once the legal agreement was completed, the planning permission was formally issued on August 4.'
A McCarthy Stone spokesperson has said: 'McCarthy Stone are excited to bring our retirement living offering to Arnold, which will include shared ownership properties to exceed the council's requirements.'
The block will contain 36 one-bed and 15 two-bed flats, 22 off-street parking spaces, including two disabled spaces, a communal lounge and a garden.

A parent group has lodged a formal complaint with the Charity Commission over the management of a prominent preparatory school that has since closed. The complaint against the Uppingham School Group, which ran Maidwell Hall in Northamptonshire, alleged failings including financial mismanagement, governance breaches, charity law violations and the false solicitation of fees. It centred on the decision leading up to and including the shutting of Maidwell Hall. Uppingham School Group said it would be "robustly refuting the claims made in the complaint" if the Charity Commission investigated. The Charity Commission said it was "assessing concerns raised" to "determine any next steps". Maidwell Hall was founded in 1911 and was one of the country's best-known prep schools. Previous pupils include former Poet Laureate Andrew Motion, writer and restaurant critic William Sitwell and Earl Spencer. The parent group claimed the decision to close the school was made in mid-2024, but parents were not informed until January 2025, despite the school enrolling new pupils during that period. It also questioned why a parents' rescue bid backed by the David Ross Educational Trust was rejected. A spokesperson for a Maidwell parents' group said: "During the last seven months, it has become evident that there is a case to answer regarding the financial mismanagement, governance failures and breaches of charity law by Uppingham. "We believe it is only right and proper that this is thoroughly investigated by the commission." 'Significantly loss making' A statement from the Uppingham School Group refuted the claims made by the parent group. It said a decision to close Maidwell School was made on 30 November 2024 at a Trustee meeting, which was then shared in January following a consultation period. The group said the proposed rescue bid had "significant gaps" and underestimated the school's expenditure, among other issues. Uppingham said that although it had increased pupil numbers and invested in the school, it "remained significantly loss-making", and then faced further financial pressures following the introduction of VAT on private school fees and the increase in employers' National Insurance contributions. The statement added that Maidwell Hall would have "faced almost certain insolvency" in 2022 had Uppingham not rescued it and repaid a "six-figure bank loan". A Charity Commission spokesperson said: "We are assessing concerns raised with us about Uppingham School to determine any next steps. In line with our guidance, Uppingham School promptly reported the closure of Maidwell School to us." Northamptonshire Police confirmed a separate police investigation into Earl Spencer's allegations of physical and sexual abuse at the school in the 1970s was ongoing. Diageo (LSE: DGE) shares are a blight on my Self-Invested Personal Pension. The FTSE 100 drinks giant is down 20% over the last year and almost 50% across three. Glencore (LSE: GLEN) has been just as grim. The commodities and trading giant has fallen 27% and 35% over the same periods. Diageo has struggled with weaker consumer demand in key markets, currency swings and restructuring costs. Glencore has been hammered by sliding coal prices, lower copper volumes and uncertainty over global trade. FTSE 100 strugglers I actually bought both stocks after their troubles began, thinking I was getting in at a bargain price. Instead, they kept tumbling. I'm personally down a third on both. Yet despite the pain, I've held on. Maybe that's stubbornness. Or a refusal to take the loss. But I still believe both companies have recovery potential, even if they're taking time to show it. Diageo's full-year results, released on 5 August, showed organic net sales up 1.7% thanks to pricing gains, but operating profit dipped 0.7% to $5.7bn. Reported profit slumped 27.8% to $4.33bn. Yet cash flow was strong at $2.74bn. The board lifted its cost-savings target to $625m. Standout brands like Don Julio and Guinness continued to grow. Glencore also disappointed with half-year results on 6 August. Adjusted earnings slid 14% to $5.4bn, while marketing profits fell 8% to $1.8bn amid weaker coal prices and lower copper output. Copper production dropped 26% due to declining grades, although cobalt rose 19%. The group pledged $1bn in savings. Mixed valuations today Diageo trades on a trailing price-to-earnings ratio of 16.7, only slightly above the long-term FTSE 100 average of around 15. The dividend yield is 3.83%, which is alright but not great. Glencore's volatile earnings leave it with a negative P/E, reflecting a 76% fall in EPS last year from $1.40 to 34 cents. The trailing yield is 2.46%. I am more optimistic about Diageo, but Donald Trump's tariffs could keep the pressure on. I'm also nervous about younger generations drinking less and the impact of weight-loss drugs on alcohol demand. The whole commodities sector is struggling and I can't see a reprieve. China's 2025 GDP growth target is around 5%, but many doubt its accuracy. Either way, the construction boom days are long over. Forecasts for the year ahead Analysts see some light. Forecasts suggest Diageo could climb to 2,310p in the next year, which would be a rise of 13.73% from today's 2,031p. Add the forecast 3.79% dividend and total returns could reach 17.52%. That would turn £10,000 into £11,752. Glencore forecasts are brighter still. Brokers tip the shares to reach 356.8p, a 19.01% gain from today's 299.8p. With a 2.46% forecast yield, the total return could be 21.47%. That would turn £10,000 into £12,147. Both forecasts are rosier than my current mood, but perhaps that reflects how beaten down I feel. The bad news is well known and priced in. If we do get good news, these shares could recover. I will keep holding, and contrarian investors might consider buying at these levels. But only for long-term investors with bags of patience. This could take time. Balfour Beatty profits rise, but US arm struggles

Balfour Beatty has plenty of faith in the infrastructure construction market both in the U.K. and the U.S. as the company remains on track to deliver its full-year expectations, leaders of the London-based builder said during its earnings call on Wednesday. But cost overruns at a highway project in Texas put a blemish on its first half results. On a conference call to discuss those numbers, Leo Quinn, Balfour Beatty's CEO, highlighted the growing amount of work that the company is being contracted to perform, and once again touted the company's selectivity as it continues its yearslong push to de-risk its portfolio. These large infrastructure projects include the flagship HS2 job, a high-speed rail system across the U.K. that Balfour Beatty is working on with Paris-based Vinci. Balfour Beatty is also working on the Sizewell C project, where the builder will deliver the main civil works alongside Laing O'Rourke and Bouygues Travaux Publics, the contractor announced on June 30. The U.K. government declared that it would invest at least 14.2 billion pounds ($19.3 billion) over the next five years. 'I'm very confident with the momentum in the business on the rising tide of infrastructure that we'll be actually delivering significant shareholder returns into the future,' Quinn, who is stepping down in September, said during the call. So much work, so few workers However, too much of a good thing has presented a problem — multiple times, Quinn noted that the demand for infrastructure construction is exceeding the supply of what contractors can provide due to lack of workers. Quinn said that the company's work de-risking its portfolio has helped buttress against the downside risks in new contracts. Specifically with power projects, he said that the company selected urban jobs to avoid having a situation where the company would need to deliver in a rural area. With that downside risk capped, Quinn said, the upside incentives hinge on performance and rely on local supply chains as well as the company's in-house capability. 'Let's face it. At this moment in time, infrastructure is booming, not only for us, but for everybody else. So it is a battle to recruit, retain the best and the brightest,' Quinn said. By the numbers Balfour Beatty reported a pre-tax profit of 132 million pounds ($179 million) in the first six months of the year, up 18% year-over-year from 112 million pounds in the first half of 2024. The company's leaders also lauded the company's order book, or backlog, which rose to 19.5 billion pounds, up year-over-year from 16.6 billion pounds, an approximately 17% increase. The financials come on the back of a strong performance by the company in its U.K. construction segment, which pulled in approximately 1.6 billion pounds in revenue, an approximately 7% increase from the prior year's 1.5 billion pounds, according to the firm. It also generated 56 million pounds in profit from operations, a gain of 65% from the prior year's 34 million. The U.K. segment also hit its 3% margin target a year earlier than the company anticipated it would, according to the news release. Across the pond, however, the firm's U.S. construction segment recorded an 11 million pound loss for the first half, compared to 18 million pounds in profit during the same period in 2024. That loss came on 2.1 billion pounds of revenue, up 24% year over year from 1.7 billion pounds. While the company's U.S. Buildings segment offered a strong performance, cost overruns at a highway project in Texas dragged on its Civils business. Quinn told investors that design issues had led to rework on the project. Phil Harrison, Balfour Beatty's CFO, said that the company was seeking to recover the costs. In prior years, Harrison said, highway projects in the Southeast and Texas were profitable, and he expected that to be the case again going forward. The company also recorded losses in its infrastructure investments and corporate activities segments, according to the news release. Harrison said that a key driver of the losses was an independent compliance monitor, a condition of the builder's military housing fraud guilty plea in 2022. A corporate monitor keeps an eye on how companies comply with agreements and settlements post-court. Balfour Beatty agreed in principle to extend the monitor's oversight to June 2026, which Harrison said was enough time to remediate outstanding work in the first half of the year.
