Brunei announces enforcement on abuse of dominant positions

The Star4 days ago
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN,(Xinhua): The Competition Commission of Brunei Darussalam (CCBD) has announced the enforcement of Section 21 and Section 23 of the Competition Act, which relate to the prohibitions of abuse of dominant positions and anti-competitive mergers, local media reported on Friday.
According to the local daily Borneo Bulletin, the Competition Act promotes and protects competition in Brunei's markets.
It also aims to promote economic efficiency, economic development, and consumer welfare.
These objectives are central to fostering a pro-business environment and a resilient economy, and are aligned with the broader aspirations of Brunei Vision 2035, which envisions a dynamic and sustainable economy that offers a high quality of life for all.
Section 21 of the act prohibits conduct by dominant businesses that restricts competition, such as predatory pricing, exclusive dealing, or other behaviour that exploits market power to limit competition or reduce consumer choice.
Section 23, on the other hand, prohibits mergers that result in, or are likely to result in, a substantial lessening of competition, particularly those that create or strengthen a dominant position in the market, which may lead to higher prices or reduced innovation. - Xinhua

Canadian PM announces support measures for softwood lumber industry

OTTAWA, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday announced a series of new measures to help the softwood lumber industry transform and remain competitive. According to a news release on the prime minister's official website, the new financial measures include 700 million Canadian dollars (508 million U.S. dollars) in loan guarantees to address the immediate pressures facing the softwood lumber sector, and 500 million Canadian dollars to supercharge product and market diversification to make the industry more competitive for the long term. "The forest sector is a pillar of Canada's economy. As we shift from reliance to resilience, Canada's new government will ensure the industry can transform to seize new opportunities in Canadian and international markets," said Carney. The package is a part of the industrial strategy designed to help Canada adapt to the global trade landscape which has "fundamentally changed," the release said. On July 25, the U.S. Department of Commerce doubled duties on softwood lumber products from Canada, with further increases expected later this month, the release noted. In 2024, 66 percent of Canada's total softwood lumber production was exported, and of that, nearly 90 percent was exported to the United States, the release said.

Canadian int'l trade increases in June

OTTAWA, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Canada's merchandise imports rose 1.4 percent, marking the first increase in four months, while exports increased 0.9 percent in June, said Statistics Canada on Tuesday. The growth of imports was largely driven by a 27.7-percent increase in imports of industrial machinery, equipment and parts, for which a one-time high-value shipment was reported in June, said the national statistical agency. Following two consecutive monthly declines, imports of motor vehicles and parts were up 2.9 percent in June. Imports of passenger cars and light trucks increased the most, largely on higher imports from Mexico, said the agency. Exports of energy products added 3.8 percent, contributing the most to the increase in total exports in June. Exports of crude oil increased the most, mainly on higher prices, said the agency. Notable decreases were observed in June in exports of unwrought aluminum, down 11.3 percent, and in exports of iron and steel products, down 11.4 percent, the agency said, adding that both products have posted steep declines in recent months. When international trade in goods and services are combined, exports increased 0.9 percent to 79.7 billion Canadian dollars (57.8 billion U.S. dollars) in June, while imports were up 1 percent to 86.3 billion Canadian dollars, said Statistics Canada.

CIIE promotion event aims to boost China-Czech business ties

PRAGUE, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- An event promoting the China International Import Expo (CIIE) in the Czech Republic was held here on Tuesday, bringing together representatives from the Czech government, the business community, industry associations, and Chinese enterprises to explore new opportunities for boosting China-Czech economic and trade cooperation. Speaking at the event, Liu Haiyan, economic and commercial counselor at the Chinese Embassy in the Czech Republic, said the CIIE serves as an important platform for China to further open up to the world and offers a golden opportunity for enterprises around the globe to access the Chinese market. Through the CIIE, Czech companies can showcase their high-quality products and further enhance their brand recognition and market share, he said, adding that he hopes Czech entrepreneurs will take this year's CIIE as an opportunity to further explore the Chinese market. During the event, a representative from the CIIE Bureau gave a virtual presentation on the upcoming eighth CIIE, which will take place in Shanghai from Nov. 5 to 10. Richard Hlavaty, director of the Department of Non-European Countries at the Ministry of Industry and Trade, said at the event that the Czech Republic considers the CIIE as a key opportunity to present the country, its innovation and industrial tradition, but also as a strategic channel for deepening economic and trade relations with China. "I firmly believe that through initiatives like this, we can continue to expand our economic ties and deepen mutual understanding between our countries," he said. Frantisek Chaloupecky, vice president of the Confederation of Industry of the Czech Republic, one of the co-organizers of the event, said that the CIIE provides an important platform for Czech companies, enabling them not only to showcase their products but also to establish business connections in the Chinese market. According to the organizers, 17 Czech exhibitors participated in last year's CIIE, primarily showcasing products in the food and beverage industries as well as the handicraft sector.
