Fondop's wall-mounted motivation to take Oldham up

BBC News30-05-2025
Oldham Athletic's 116-year stay in the English Football League ended in ignominy in 2022.The Latics picked up the unenviable record of becoming the first former Premier League club to drop out of the top four tiers of English football.Three years on from that chastening relegation, one man who has seen the club at its lowest ebb has set about leading the charge back to league football.BBC Radio Manchester spoke to striker Mike Fondop about how he has motivated himself to lead Oldham to glory in Sunday's National League promotion final against Southend United at Wembley.
The 31-year-old arrived at the club during Oldham's ill-fated 2022 season but injuries restricted him to just two appearances.Despite the club losing its EFL status, Fondop stuck with the club and has scored 37 goals in 113 National League appearances since. But what encouraged him to stay at Boundary Park?"The manager at the time, John Sheridan, called me after the end of the season and said 'I need you to come back. You owe me because I signed you and you only played two games. I want you to get this club back where it belongs'," Fondop said."So that has always been an objective because I came and I didn't have a chance to help them stay in League Two."The club doesn't belong in League Two, they belong higher than that but it is a step by step process."Between their relegation from League Two and the start of the following 2022-23 National League season, a takeover of the Latics by local businessman Frank Rothwell was completed. That ended Abdallah Lemsagam's tenure in control of the club and Fondop said that the difference between then and now is stark."The club is absolutely different now. The ownership now is more family orientated. The owners are approachable and want everyone to feel part of a family," he added."In the past it felt toxic. As a player I was focused on what I was signed to do but the environment at the time felt toxic. Now it is so different."If a club doesn't treat its players well you might think in the long run you can get away with it, you might for a period of time, but eventually it is going to affect results. Now the treatment is completely different."
'I wasn't even born last time Oldham won promotion'
Oldham are not a club which have had much to celebrate in recent decades, having floated around the lower leagues of English football both before and after the turn of the millennium - having spent 21 years in the third tier prior to relegation to League Two in 2018.Their most recent promotion came in 1991 when they won the then-Division Two second tier championship.Their recent record makes for grim reading. Their first season in the National League saw them finish 12th and was the first time they had finished in the top half of a division since 2009.Fondop said a team talk from boss Micky Mellon about how long it had been since the club had won promotion helped motivate him ahead of the trip to the capital."It has been 34 years since we experienced promotion. I'm 31 so last time they won promotion I wasn't even born," Fondop added."After the gaffer said that I went home and wrote down 34 years in bold on a piece of paper with my goals for the season and I put it on my kitchen wall. It's always in my mind."It's in my head every day because I want to be part of history and I want the fans to get back into the feeling of what Oldham deserves. It means more than people might think. It's in my kitchen until today and I'm not going to remove it until it is done."As for how he plans to ease his nerves ahead of running out at Wembley, Fondop has an eclectic and varied music taste."On gamedays I listen to gospel and that is what calms me," he said."I love Andrea Bocelli, Time To Say Goodbye is one of my favourites."I love jazz music as well, I don't have one specific type of song, I love a bit of everything. Usually in my downtime I can listen to opera and jazz. I don't like listening to things that give me headaches."

Micah Richards tells Arsenal to sign £80m star after Manchester United win

Micah Richards has named the signing Arsenal should make to 'solve a lot of problems' after their opening Premier League victory over Manchester United. Mikel Arteta's side, who are expected to challenge for the title yet again after three successive second-place finishes, began the 2025-26 campaign with a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford. The Gunners were far from at their fluent best but were gifted an early goal following a mistake from United back-up goalkeeper Altay Bayindir and then withstood significant pressure from the hosts to return to north London with the three points. Ex-England defender Richards described it as a 'massive win' for Arsenal and said the team's strength in depth was impressive after Arteta used Myles Lewis-Kelly and Jurrien Timber as second-half substitutes. The only real weakness Richards saw in Arsenal was at left-wing, where Gabriel Martinelli started before being replaced by ex-Chelsea star Noni Madueke, who prefers to operate off the right. Richards believes Arsenal would benefit from the addition of another left-winger before the transfer deadline and says signing Real Madrid's Rodrigo would 'solve a lot of problems'. Arteta expressed interest in signing Rodrygo earlier in the summer but the Gunners are not currently pursuing the Brazilian, who is valued at around £80m. Arsenal were interested in Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze, who could have played on the left, but it is their north London rivals Tottenham who are closing in on £68m deal. 'I still think Arsenal are a left winger short or a left forward short,' former Manchester City defender Richards said on The Rest is Football podcast. 'But Arsenal's bench today was so strong with Lewis-Skelly and Timber coming on. Mikel Arteta can change the full-backs now and it doesn't affect the team, the quality doesn't go down. 'That will really help them throughout the season. I prefer Noni Madueke on the right so I just look at that position on the left-hand side and if they could sort that. 'They were linked with Rodrygo and that could solve a lot of problems for them. 'But it's a massive win for Arsenal away from home and just gives them that momentum at the start of the season.' While Arsenal were not at their best at Old Trafford, Arteta was full of praise for the 'resilience' his team showed to beat an improved Manchester United. More Trending 'We came here away and won which is a big result. We were clearly not at our best,' the Gunners boss told BBC's Match of the Day. 'We attacked the box and we reacted well to unusual mistakes. The team reacted time after time in an incredible way. Very proud of that because that is why we got the opportunity to win the game. 'We showed a resilience and a will to win. They put you on the ropes here, you will have to have moments when you suffer. To find a way to win at this ground, I'm very happy with the team.' Arsenal will look to make it two wins from two next Saturday when Premier League new-boys Leeds United visit the Emirates Stadium. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Can you solve it? Are you a matcha for these tasty Japanese puzzles?

Japan is a world puzzle superpower. Its grid logic puzzles – like Sudoku, Kakuro, KenKen and many more – are played across the world by millions every day. The country also has its own culture of mathematical puzzles, nurtured by the Academy of Recreational Mathematics, Japan, which was founded in 1979. Today's problems are by Yoshiyuki Kotani, a founder member of the Academy and a professor of engineering at Tokyo University. They are taken from his new book, Tasty Japanese Morsels in Recreational Mathematics. 1. Squid game Two octopuses will face off in a boxing match. Each octopus requires eight gloves. (There is no distinction between left and right gloves.) The rules of octopus boxing stipulate that an octopus must only wear gloves of the same colour. There is a bag containing 16 red gloves and 16 green gloves. Find the minimum number of gloves that must be drawn at random from the bag to guarantee that the colours of the gloves of the two octopuses are (a) the same. (b) different. (c) either the same or different. 2. Sum-o wrestling. The diagram below represents a multiplication in which all but two of the digits have been replaced by stars. Reconstruct the computation. 3. Another boxing puzzle A restaurant uses 4 × 4 and 5 × 5 Bento boxes each divided into exactly eight square sections, as shown in the diagram below The chef has asked you to create Bento boxes with rectangular boxes. Each Bento must still have eight square sections, even though, as in the example, the square sections do not have to be all of the same size. Design a 4 × 6 Bento box, a 3 × 9 Bento box, and a 5 × 6 Bento box. I'll be back at 5pm UK. PLEASE NO SPOILERS. Please discuss your favourite Japanese things. Tasty Japanese Morsels in Recreational Mathematics by Yoshiyuki Kotani s published by the American Mathematical Association. All the diagrams above are taken from the book. I've been setting a puzzle here on alternate Mondays since 2015. I'm always on the look-out for great puzzles. If you would like to suggest one, email me. PS: Might anyone with computer skills be able to help me create a web page for a puzzle that involves dragging shapes around the screen? I hope to use the puzzle in a future column. If you think you can help, email me.

Mark Vientos (4 RBIs), Mets top Mariners in Little League Classic

August 18 - Mark Vientos lofted a sacrifice fly in a three-run second inning and hit a three-run homer to spark a four-run outburst in the fifth frame for the New York Mets, who earned a series win by beating the Seattle Mariners 7-3 in the Little League Classic in Williamsport, PA. The Mets won the final two games of the three-game set -- which began Friday and Saturday in New York -- to earn their first series win since July 25-27, when they swept the San Francisco Giants. The Mets, who went just 2-14 between July 28 and Friday, remained 1 1/2 games ahead of the Cincinnati Reds in the race for the last National League wild-card berth. Jorge Polanco had an RBI single in the fourth and Cal Raleigh hit his major league-leading 47th homer, a two-run shot in the seventh, for the Mariners, who have lost four of five after going 10-1 in their first 11 games following the trade deadline. Francisco Alvarez (double) and Brett Baty (single) had RBI hits before Vientos' sacrifice fly. The homer in the fifth inning was just the third since May 28 and eighth this season for Vientos, who hit 27 homers in 2024 but has struggled to earn regular playing time this year. The four RBIs tied a season-high for Vientos, who hit a grand slam in a loss to the host San Diego Padres on July 28. Francisco Lindor chased George Kirby (8-6) two batters later, when he laced an RBI double. Lindor finished 3-for-5 and has multiple hits in the last five games, a span in which he is batting .619 (13-for-21). Alvarez also had three hits while Jeff McNeil added two hits. Clay Holmes (10-6) earned the win after allowing one run on five hits and one walk while striking out four over five innings. Raleigh, Polanco and Julio Rodriguez had two hits apiece for the Mariners. Kirby gave up seven runs on 12 hits and three walks while striking out four over 4 2/3 innings. --Field Level Media
