Amazon Prime confirms iconic 90s gameshow revival with WWE legend as host
Amazon Prime Video is bringing back an iconic gameshow with a WWE legend as the new host.
American Gladiators, which first aired later in 1989 and initially ran until 1996 before returning for a short-lived revival in 2008, is making a comeback with another reboot.
The show inspired the UK version and others around the world, and former WWE Champion Mike 'The Miz' Mizanin has been confirmed as host for the new series.
The announcement was made on Monday ahead of the annual Amazon upfront presentation, as bosses promised an 'All Star cast of Gladiators for the modern era'.
A press release promised: 'The competition will feature brand new events, as well incorporate some classics from the original series like Gauntlet, Hang Tough, and The Eliminator.'
Barry Poznick, general manager of MGM Alternative, Evolution Media, and Big Fish Entertainment said he's 'excited to officially welcome' Miz into 'the American Gladiators family'.
'He's the perfect host for the new era of this iconic franchise,' he added in a statement. 'This isn't just a comeback, it's a cultural revival. Fans, old and new, are going to love this evolution in sports entertainment.'
Meanwhile, seven seasons of the original run are available to stream on a newly launched American Gladiators' FAST Channel on Prime Video, which includes UK viewers.
Poznick noted that 'the US reboot, combined with our epic success in the UK' and the subsequent tour makes 2025 a great time for the franchise.

In a post on X, Miz admitted his childhood self is 'screaming' at the idea of being at the helm of the revival.
He wrote: 'I'm thrilled to announce I'm the new host of AMERICAN GLADIATORS! The 10-year-old me is screaming.
'Huge thanks to MGM & Amazon Prime Video for trusting me with this iconic legacy.'
The 44-year-old wrestler promised the new show would be 'honouring the original' as well as 'bringing fresh energy to a whole new generation'.
He's also no stranger to TV, having previously appeared on The Challenge as a contestant and host over 17 years.
As well as his own reality show, Miz & Mrs., he's appeared on Dancing With The Stars, Fear Factor, and more. More Trending
Miz recently missed out on a spot on the WrestleMania 41 card, and admitted while it was 'not easy', he's proud to be a 'utility player'.
He exclusively told Metro: 'If the cards don't fall where they may, you better believe I'm trying my best to try to get into a spot, or trying to get to that level of what I feel I can produce.
'And I do feel I can produce at that level still to this day. It's just, you know, sometimes the cards don't fall where they may.'

With kung fu kicks and dragon masks, pro wrestlers find new fans at fight night in China
Asia American-style professional wrestling is gaining momentum in China, where Chinese history and music are woven into standard pro wrestling fare. June 6, 2025, 5:16 AM EDT By Janis Mackey Frayer BEIJING — The music blared and the crowd whooped as Alexis Lee strutted across the stage toward the ring. At just 5 feet tall, the wispy professional wrestler was dwarfed by heftier contenders, so to make her point, she pushed a spectator over in his chair and growled through her skeleton face paint. The crowd loved it. 'It's like the circus but with athletics,' Lee, a 30-year-old Singaporean, told NBC News. 'So it's entertaining, and live drama too. It's just fun.' While martial arts have a deep history in China, professional wrestling — with its raucous theatrics, shiny tights and body slams — is still fighting for recognition here. But on a recent Saturday night at a live events venue in Beijing, a special six-match bout billed as the 'Battle of the Decade' showed how far pro wrestling has come and its potential in the massive Chinese entertainment market. 'People are really starting to take pro wrestling — Chinese pro wrestling — seriously,' said Adrian Gomez, the American founder of Middle Kingdom Wrestling, one of the few pro wrestling organizations in China, and the man of the night. 'I feel this is the pinnacle of 10 years of really hard work,' said Gomez, 37, whose first-ever wrestling event in 2015 failed to draw a single paying spectator. For this event, there were all the alter egos and over-the-top moves of American-style pro wrestling that have made WWE a global brand. For the harder-to-win Chinese market, wrestlers have woven Chinese history and music into standard pro wrestling fare. Alberto Curry, from Atlanta, is better known on the Asia pro wrestling circuit as Zombie Dragon for the leathery dragon mask with wing tips that he wears. Curry admits it took some experimentation to determine what a Chinese audience wants to see. 'Nobody reacted to being a bad guy, which is weird,' a masked Curry, 36, said in an interview. 'Then I switched it, and people immediately took to it.' One of the obstacles to acceptance in China is that officials have appeared unsure whether to classify pro wrestling as actual fighting or entertainment, according to Ho Ho Lun, who was squaring off against Chinese wrestling legend The Slam in the evening's main event. 'For many years, there were no Chinese talents,' said Lun, 36, a former WWE wrestling star from the Chinese territory of Hong Kong. 'People used to only watch on TV until they found out, 'Oh, there's actually a place I can go and watch it for real.'' WWE tried breaking into the Chinese market back in 2016, and more recently signed a livestreaming deal with a mainland platform. The reach is limited, according to market intelligence firm S&P Global, as less than 10% of Chinese households with internet access have ever tuned in. 'The thing about wrestling is that it can be anything you want it to be,' said Gomez, who moved on a whim from Arizona to the northern Chinese city of Harbin 15 years ago to work as an English teacher. 'There weren't really any local leagues for pro wrestling,' he said. 'I think we've found a way to please and make Chinese people feel proud of the wrestling that's building up here.' For wrestlers, it's a fully hands-on experience, from getting ready to adjusting each other's costumes to selling their own branded merchandise before and after the show. They even helped build the ring for the event. Few felt what was at stake more than Wang Tao, who grew up in rural China and is considered a rising star among pro wrestlers. Wang rehearsed moves with his Dubai-based wrestling partner Shaheen Alshehhi and, wearing no shirt and silver streaks in his hair, quietly paced a hallway close to the ringside. 'I'm a little nervous,' he said. 'For me, this is really important.' Throughout the night, the sold-out crowd of nearly 400 people cheered, booed, swore and laughed as wrestlers delivered kung fu kicks and body blows and even spilled out of the ring onto the floor. Ho Ho Lun defeated The Slam to claim the championship belt, notching a victory for the pro wrestling scene here in the process. 'People are looking for new ways to entertain themselves,' wrestling fan Beck Jiang, 32, said of the Chinese market. 'This is a pretty awesome way.' ITV The Chase star Bradley Walsh opens up on being 'sacked' from role
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Treasured TV presenter Bradley Walsh marked his 65th birthday this week, but despite hints at "slowing down", his busy schedule shows no signs of letting up. Walsh is a staple on British television, hosting popular shows such as 'The Chase', 'Gladiators', and 'Blankety Blank', as well as travelling the country with his son Barney in 'Breaking Dad'. However, before becoming a household name, Walsh began his career as a Rolls Royce apprentice jet engineer and even had a brief stint as a footballer with Brentford FC, until an injury cut his playing days short. Walsh's foray into show business began as a Pontins bluecoat entertainer, giving him his first taste of life on stage. However, his natural prankster tendencies, which often landed him in hot water at school and in previous jobs, ultimately led to him being sacked from this role. In an interview with earlier this year, Walsh recalled: "Once I left that to get into the entertainment industry and become a blue coat, I got sacked from being the bloke that was messing around. I thought that was the job! In the end I thought to myself, why don't I just get paid for messing around?". Post-Pontins, Walsh carved a career in stand-up comedy and remarked: "That was a very conscious decision. So, I've got myself a routine together," discussing his approach to humour. Reflecting on his style, he commented, "I was a very physical comic, bit like Norman Wisdom, not so many jokes. I was a very physical comic. And that's where it all started.", reports the Mirror. Celebrated across Britain, Bradley Walsh has been a staple on TV screens for over two decades, mastering roles in comedy, acting, and presenting. His notable roles include Danny Baldwin on the renowned ITV soap 'Coronation Street', DS Ronnie Brooks in 'Law and Order: UK' and as Graham O'Brien in the beloved sci-fi series 'Doctor Who' broadcast on BBC One, according to Gloucestershire Live. In 2009, Bradley transitioned to game show hosting by taking over as the host of ITV's hit quiz show 'The Chase'. He narrated how he landed the gig while popping into ITV to enquire about hosting opportunities. During a nostalgic chat with the ex-head of daytime television, she revealed plans for a new quiz show, to which Bradley promptly gave his critique. Recalling their conversation, Walsh shared, "I took it away and I said 'Yes, this can work, this will work' and she said, 'Okay, well we're going to make a pilot' and I said, 'I'll do it for you' and she said, 'Yeah, but it's only an office run-through' and I said, 'I'll do it for you, don't worry'." In an interview on the Tommy Tiernan show last year, Bradley Walsh recalled helping launch the pilot and coming up with nicknames for The Chasers. Nearly 16 years on, Bradley's passion for The Chase remains strong, with no plans to leave the show. Speaking to the Daily Mail, he reflected on his time on the programme: "Until people say they've had enough and start switching off, I'll do it. We've had such an extraordinary time together. It's the best job in the world."
