Healthscope in critical condition: Inside the collapse of Australia's second-biggest private hospital network

Time of India26-05-2025

Healthscope
, the second-largest private hospital network of Australia, has entered receivership with corporate restructuring firm McGrathNicol appointed to oversee the sale of its assets, raising serious questions about the future of private healthcare for thousands of Australians.
But despite the financial collapse of its parent company, the group insists that patient care will continue without disruption and with no immediate impact on its 19,000 staff or patient care.
The company operates 37 hospitals across the country, employing around 19,000 staff and treating over 650,000 Australians annually. Though its parent entity, owned by North American private equity firm Brookfield, has collapsed under financial pressure, the operational side of the business remains intact.

'We're still scrubbing in. Still showing up,' said one senior nurse in Melbourne. 'The uncertainty is real, but so is our duty to patients.'
Brookfield, which acquired Healthscope for $5.7 billion in 2019, has seen its investment deteriorate. After selling off the hospital properties to trusts and failing to meet rent obligations, lenders, led by CBA, stepped in and appointed McGrathNicol as receivers. KordaMentha will represent Brookfield's interests during the sale.

'This is a receivership of the holding company, not the hospitals themselves,' said CEO Tino La Spina, who stressed that no hospitals will close and no staff will be laid off. 'All 37 of our hospitals continue to operate as normal,' he said. 'Today's appointment of receivers, including the additional funding, ensures a stable path to a sale, with no impacts on any hospitals, staff or patients.'
Currently available funds
Healthscope has $110 million in cash on hand, and the Commonwealth Bank has provided an extra $100 million in funding to keep operations running smoothly while the business is sold. Ten indicative offers have already been received, some for the full business.
Federal Health Minister Mark Butler said he received direct assurances from the CEO that every booked surgery, including childbirths and joint replacements, would proceed as scheduled. 'I will hold the company and the receivers to that commitment,' Butler said.
Butler was clear that there would be no government bailout. 'This is an overseas private equity firm. They will not receive taxpayer support,' he said. 'Private hospitals receive nearly $8 billion a year in public subsidies. That comes with responsibility.'
Healthscope insists the focus remains unchanged, despite the corporate upheaval: care will continue, and patients can proceed with confidence.

Capillary Tech set to file IPO documents by October; Warburg, others to trim stake via listing planned this fiscal

Capillary Technologies, a company specialising in loyalty management and customer engagement software, is likely to file a draft prospectus by October and go public this fiscal, two people aware of the plan told Mint. This would be its second attempt at listing. The company's board approved an initial public offering of ₹2,250 crore, of which ₹500 crore is a fresh issue of shares and ₹1,750 crore is an offer for sale by existing investors, according to a filing with the ministry of corporate affairs earlier this month. Investors such as Warburg Pincus and Avataar Ventures will sell a part of their stakes in the IPO to reach minimum public shareholding norms, the people added. Warburg Pincus first invested in Capillary in 2018 in a $20 million round, alongside Sequoia Capital. Avataar joined the cap table in 2023 in an equity and debt round that totalled $140 million. It is likely to be valued at $1.2-1.3 billion. All investors are bullish on the growth of the company but will sell to meet the minimum public holding requirements," one person told Mint, requesting anonymity. This is Capillary Technologies' second attempt at a public listing. It joins startups including Navi and Droom that had initially pursued IPOs during the 2021 boom but are now making a renewed push to go public this year. The company first filed a draft red herring prospectus in December 2021 for a fresh issue of equity shares worth ₹200 crore and an offer for sale of ₹650 crore, totaling ₹850 crore. However, the company did not proceed with the listing at the time. Queries sent to Capillary Technologies, Warburg Pincus, and Avataar Ventures did not elicit a response at the time of publishing the story. Bank of Baroda tops bidding for Jet Airways' BKC office in insolvency auction

In a move under the ongoing Jet Airways insolvency proceedings, Bank of Baroda has emerged as the highest bidder for the defunct airline's 83,000 sq ft office space in Mumbai's Godrej BKC commercial tower, located in the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) business district, according to a report by The Economic Times. The property, comprising an entire floor in the 19-storey commercial tower, was put up for sale last month by a government-appointed liquidator. The reserve price was fixed at ₹335.24 crore. Brookfield has right of first refusal on BKC office Following the bidding process, the liquidator is now expected to notify Brookfield Asset Management, which holds the right of first refusal (ROFR) on the property. Brookfield has 15 days to decide whether it will match Bank of Baroda's offer to acquire the asset. Brookfield may expand holdings in Godrej BKC tower The report said that Brookfield is likely to exercise its ROFR. The global investment firm already owns two floors in the same tower, purchased in 2020 for ₹490 crore as part of Jet Airways' insolvency resolution. These floors, spread across the third and fourth levels, span about 180,000 sq ft and include 138 car parking slots. Tenants currently occupying this space include marquee names like the World Bank and PayPal. The ROFR agreement at the time also gave Brookfield preferential rights on any additional office space becoming available in the tower — including the currently auctioned second floor. NCLT clears legal hurdles for auctioned office The second floor, currently unoccupied, had been sealed by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai due to outstanding dues. However, on April 28, the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) directed the civic body to unseal the office and cease any recovery proceedings, clearing the way for the sale. The asset is being sold on an 'as is where is' basis under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), with all taxes, liabilities, and transfer charges to be borne by the winning bidder, the news report said. Auction details and Jet Airways' real estate legacy The e-auction for the property was conducted on June 2 and included 70 dedicated car parking spaces. Interested bidders were required to submit an earnest money deposit of ₹32.5 crore. The Godrej BKC tower was developed in 2011 through a joint venture between Godrej Properties and Jet Airways. The airline had originally acquired the land from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) in 2008 for ₹826 crore before partnering with Godrej for the construction of the commercial building.
