Cynthia Erivo defends her casting as Jesus in 'the gayest place on Earth'

Metro2 days ago

Cynthia Erivo has shrugged off criticism after she was announced to be playing Jesus.
The 38-year-old British actress and singer is best known for playing Harriet Taubman in the movie Harriet, Aretha Franklin in the series Genius: Aretha and Elphaba in Wicked.
She has also starred in a string of theatre productions, including Sister Act, The Color Purple, and Gutenberg! The Musical!.
Earlier this year she was announced as the star on the Hollywood Bowl's upcoming staging of Jesus Christ Superstar.
In February the 38-year-old was revealed to be playing Jesus Christ in the show, which will have three performances in August.
'Jesus Christ Superstar at the Hollywood Bowl! Emmy, Grammy, and Tony winner, and three-time Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo is cast as Jesus,' the venue revealed on social media.
Cynthia then shared: 'Just a little busy this summer, can't wait.'
However, the casting divided people, with some even going so far as to label it 'blasphemous'.
A few months on Cynthia has defended her casting in Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's musical.
Asked by Billboard about the backlash to a Black queer woman taking on the role, she declared: 'Why not?'
'You can't please everyone. It is legitimately a three-day performance at the Hollywood Bowl where I get to sing my face off.
'So hopefully they will come and realise, 'Oh, it's a musical, the gayest place on Earth'.'
When her casting was initially announced Cynthia was also met with support from fans who pointed out the musical had always featured a racially diverse cast, and they enjoyed watching people have a 'meltdown' over her casting.
Cynthia previously starred as Mary Magdalene in an all-female version of the musical, which made its Broadway debut in 1971, in 2020.
The upcoming production will see Adam Lambert play Judas, with Tony Award winner Sergio Trujillo the director and choreographer.
Rice previously said he was looking forward to see this reimagining of his show.
'I think a piece that is established, there's no reason it can't be done in lots of forms,' he told LBC.
'I think Cynthia, who is one of the best singers on the planet, will do a great version.'
A previous staging in 2018 – NBC's Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert – saw John Legend play Jesus. More Trending
Since making her debut on the West End in 2011, Cynthia has gone on to win an Emmy, a Grammy, and a Tony Award, now being just one win away from securing the title of EGOT with an Oscar win.
Later this month Cynthia will host the Tony Awards, as well as release an album. Later this year she will also star in Wicked's sequel – Wicked For Good.
Her next theatre show after Jesus Christ Superstar will be Frankenstein on the West End next year, in which she will play a jaw-dropping 23 roles.

Elton John says ‘we will not back down' in awards speech addressing AI concerns

The Government has repeatedly rejected changes to the Data (Use and Access) Bill, proposed by the House of Lords, aimed at strengthening protections for the creative sector. Peers have attempted to amend the Bill by adding a commitment to introduce transparency requirements, aiming to ensure copyright holders are able to see when their work has been used and by who. Veteran rock singer Sir Elton, 78, who picked up the Creators' Champion Award at Billboard's Global Power Players Event on Wednesday, is among hundreds of creatives who have raised concerns over AI companies using copyrighted work without permission. In an Instagram post he thanked the US magazine for the award and said: 'Supporting the next generation of British artists is one of the major driving forces in my life. 'As everyone in that room was aware, the Data Bill is currently looming over our industries and the future livelihood of all artists. It is an existential issue. 'Earlier this evening, the Government was defeated for an unprecedented fifth time by the House of Lords who have backed the crucial amendment to the Bill. 'I am now calling on the Government to do the right thing and get transparency added to the Bill. 'Administration of copyright must be transparent. And it must have an artist's full permission. These two principles are the bedrock of our industry. They must be included in the data Bill as a backstop. Sir Elton John after being made a member of the Order of the Companions of Honour for services to music and to charity (Dominic Lipinski/PA) 'Let's be clear – we want to work with the Government. We are not anti AI. We are not anti big tech. We are not against Labour. We want a solution that brings all parties together in a way that's transparent, fair and allows artists to maintain control of their work. 'We will not let the Government forget their promise to support our creative industries. We will not back down and we will not quietly go away. This is just the beginning. 'Thank you, Billboard. And thank you Baroness Kidron and The House of Lords for standing up for our world-beating artists, journalists, playwrights, designers and authors.' The prolonged impasse and the conduct of proceedings at Westminster now threatens the future of the whole Bill and its measures, including a crackdown on deepfake porn abuse.

Wicked: For Good first trailer reveals new songs, a wedding, and the first glimpse of Dorothy as fans try to figure out who will play the iconic character

The first trailer for Wicked's hotly-anticipated sequel has sent fans into a frenzy. Wicked: For Good is set to hit cinemas on November 21, with a first look at the movie conclusion of the Broadway hit teasing the fate of the protagonists and a first look at new characters. The sequel sees the return of Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and Ariana Grande as Glinda, the Good Witch of the North - with part two of the musical movie following their friendship after Elphaba was banished from Oz. Elphaba is living in exile, hidden within the Ozian forest while continuing her fight for the freedom of Oz's silenced Animals and desperately trying to expose the truth about The Wizard (Jeff Goldblum). Glinda, meanwhile, has become the symbol of Goodness for all of Oz, living at the palace in Emerald City and reveling in the perks of fame and popularity as she prepares to tie the knot with Prince Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey). From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. She is also working under the instruction of Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) to convince the citizens of Oz that they have nothing to fear when it comes to The Wizard. Yet behind the scenes, Glinda is attempting to reconcile Elphaba and The Wizard, which only results in her being drawn further apart from her friend. As a result Boq (Ethan Slater) and Fiyero are set to be changed forever, while the safety of Elphaba's sister, Nessarose (Marissa Bode) comes into question. Just as tensions in Oz reach an all time high, a girl from Kansas comes crashing into all their lives. Fans went wild at the first glimpse of Dorothy - who was seen walking along the yellow brick road with the Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, and Scarecrow. Her face was obscured as she was shown from the back, with fans taking to X/Twitter to try and figure out her identity. They penned: 'the way we still don't know who plays as dorothy in wicked new trailer'; In wicked for good what if we don't see Dorothy's face the whole movie.?' 'So She brings Dorothy to Oz?'; 'i just watched wicked last sunday and it's so gooood oh i can't wait for this. show me dorothy pls!!'; 'Who do you think could be playing Dorothy in Wicked For Good?'; 'The crazy part about the Wicked: For Good trailer is the fact that there's still so much to come. We didn't see Nessarose or Boq. They recently filmed scenes at Shiz for this. We got a little of Dorothy's crew. This is just a glimpse. I can't wait to see it ALL unfold'; Several names have been put forward while fans try to guess who is Dorothy. The frontrunner so far is Alisha Weir, 15, who is best known for playing Matilda in the Netflix adaptation of Matilda the Musical and the titular character in the horror flick Abigail. Others have suggested that Addison Rae or Taylor Swift could be slipping into the iconic ruby red slippers. Last year's global cinematic cultural sensation, which became the most successful Broadway film adaptation of all time, now reaches its epic, electrifying, emotional conclusion in Wicked: For Good. Wicked: For Good is being directed again by award-winning Jon M. Chu, who has confirmed that there will be new, original songs in the sequel, along with fan favourites For Good and No Good Deed. Describing the tunes as 'bangers', he revealed: 'I think it's been reported we have two new songs. 'They're great additions to this movie. They were necessary in this movie to help tell the story.' In May, Ariana and Cynthia opened up about their experience with Wicked as they spoke with fans during CinemaCon. Poking fun at last year's promotional tour which saw the pair getting emotional in a number of interviews, Cynthia said that there will be 'less waterworks this time'. She added: 'but I am not sure we can live up to that', as Ariana humorously claimed that she already packed tissues. Late last year, Jon teased what viewers can expect with the sequel and told Entertainment Weekly, 'If Part 1 is about choices, Part 2 is about consequences. 'Choices are difficult to make, but when you do make those choices, sometimes the result isn't what you expect it to be. It can be lonely, it can be hard.' He also added, 'There's a lot of soul searching in movie 2. They're asking, "Is this the right decision that you made?"' The director later talked about the darker tone of the upcoming film, but shared that there will also be lighter elements. 'There is lots of lightness in the movie. There's a lot of fun parts. We've not forgotten about that, but there's a matureness and a nuance to it that we earn from the first movie. The second movie really gets to play with [that maturity].' Meanwhile Cynthia told People in February, 'I think you can expect a little bit of spice in the second part because they've grown up a little bit.' She explained that the characters are 'not in school anymore; they've stepped into their careers and stepped into their choices.' Wicked was a box office success and raked in around $747.2 million on a budget of $150 million.
