Cop charged with killing Nur Farah Kartini in Hulu Bernam plantation pleads not guilty

SHAH ALAM, June 12 — The policeman accused of murdering Nur Farah Kartini Abdullah, whose body was found in an oil palm plantation last year, pleaded not guilty to the murder charge in the High Court here today.
Lance Corporal Muhammad Alif Monjani, 27, made the plea before Judge Julia Ibrahim, who then set July 15 for mention.
The policeman was charged with murdering the 25-year-old woman at the SKC Kledang oil palm plantation, Hulu Bernam near here, between 9 am on July 10, 2024, and 6 pm, July 15 last year.
The charge, framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, provides a sentence of hanging to death or imprisonment for not more than 40 years and whipping of not less than 12 strokes, upon conviction.
Muhammad Alif, who arrived in court wearing a T-shirt and accompanied by policemen, was represented by lawyers Nur Aida Md Zainuddin and Aida Jaafar, while the prosecution was represented by Deputy Public Prosecutor Maizatul Munirah Abdul Rahman.
He was first charged with murdering the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris student on July 26, 2024, at the Kuala Kubu Bharu Magistrate's Court and on May 28, the case was transferred to the Shah Alam High Court for trial.
Nur Farah Kartini was reported missing on July 10, 2024, before her body was found at about 6 pm, five days later, in an oil palm plantation in Kampung Sri Keledang, Hulu Bernam.— Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 — Johor police are seeking a man involved in a brawl with a lorry driver at the Kempas Toll Plaza in Johor Baru around 2.30pm last Sunday to assist in their investigation. Johor Baru North District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Balveer Singh Mahindar Singh said the suspect is wanted for assaulting the driver, allegedly over the sound of a car horn, according to a report published in Kosmo! Online today. The incident began when the 31-year-old lorry driver honked at a Proton Wira that remained stationary despite the toll barrier having lifted. 'A man then emerged from the passenger side of the Proton Wira, opened the lorry door, and repeatedly punched the driver in the face and head,' he said. The case is being investigated under Section 160 of the Penal Code for affray in a public place, which carries a penalty of up to six months' imprisonment, a RM1,000 fine, or both. Members of the public with information about the incident are urged to contact 07-5563122 to assist in the investigation.

(Bernama pic) PUTRAJAYA : The tourism, arts and culture ministry has issued inspection notices and show-cause letters to several business entities involved in the accident on the East-West Highway near Gerik, Perak, which killed 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students. The ministry said the action was taken under the Tourism Industry Act 1992 after receiving a report on the tragedy. 'The ministry will work with the police, the Land Public Transport Agency and the road transport department to complete the investigation in accordance with the provisions of the law so that appropriate punishment is imposed, and the victims' families receive the appropriate protection,' it said in a statement today. It said further action will be taken once the investigation is concluded. The ministry's officials have also visited the families of the victims and those of the injured, it said, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring tourism-related activities are conducted safely, ethically, and responsibly. In the incident on June 9, a chartered bus carrying UPSI students from Jertih, Terengganu, to the main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, overturned after being involved in a collision with a car. Thirty-three people, including the bus driver and attendant, as well as the driver and three passengers of the car were injured.

GERIK, June 13 — Mohd Amirul Fadhil who was behind the wheel of the chartered bus that crashed on the East-West Highway, was today charged with dangerous driving, after 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students on board died on June 9. The 39-year-old was charged with 15 counts under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries up to 10 years' jail and a RM50,000 fine upon conviction. 'I understand. I plead not guilty,' he was quoted as saying in the Magistrate's Court here by Sinar Harian after the charges were read out. He also claimed trial to a separate charge of reckless driving under Section 42(1), which carries up to five years' jail, a fine between RM5,000 and RM15,000, and a minimum five-year licence suspension. The crash occurred at about 1am last Monday, while the bus was ferrying 42 students from Jertih, Terengganu to UPSI's main campus. Thirteen students died at the scene, while two more died in hospital.
