Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi kept the Indian flag flying high in Riyadh after advancing to the semi-finals of the Esports World Cup, where chess makes its debut this year. Erigaisi, who is representing the Gen.G Esports, topped Group B after defeating compatriot Nihal Sarin and French GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave 2-0 and 2-1 respectively on Wednesday.
The 21-year-old would then setup a semi-final meeting with Alireza Firouzja, another French GM, after defeating Russian's Ian Nepomniachtchi 2-1 in the quarter-finals on Thursday.

Also advancing to the last four besides Erigaisi and Firouzja were Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura, ranked first and second in the world who defeated Sarin and Levon Aronian respectively.
Sarin bows out after quarter-final defeat against Carlsen
For Sarin, representing Indian Esports organisation S8UL at the event, it was the end of the road after a journey in which he was one of four players making it to the Esports World Cup via the Last Chance Qualifier along with Aronian, Anish Giri and Javokhir Sindarov, ahead of Indian No 1 R Praggnanandhaa.
Sarin, however, was delighted at the prospect of coming face-to-face with his 'inspiration' Carlsen at the event for the first time in his career.
'I'm just very happy to play against Magnus; he's my biggest inspiration. It's my first time getting to play him in a match. I wish him good luck,' the 21-year-old was quoted by Take Take Take as saying after his quarter-final defeat at the hands of the world No 1.
While Erigaisi's semi-final clash is currently underway, Team Liquid's Carlsen will be squaring off against Nakamura, who's part of Team Falcons along with Firouzja, on Friday – with the remaining matches of the event also set to take place on the same day.
A total prize fund of $1.55 million has been set aside for the inaugural chess event at the Esports World Cup, of which $250,000 will be awarded to the winner and $190,000 for the runner-up.
By reaching the semi-finals, Erigaisi is assured of walking away with either $145,000 or $115,000 to his name, depending on whether he finishes third or fourth.

Sarin, meanwhile, will be taking home $85,000 for making it to the quarter-finals.

PCB issues 'blanket ban' on future participation in WCL
Agencies Pakistan players in WCL The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Sunday announced a blanket ban on its players' participation in future editions of the World Championship of Legends (WCL), accusing the tournament organisers of being "biased" and lacking sporting integrity. The decision follows a sequence of events in which the Indian team forfeited both their group-stage clash and semifinal against Pakistan, citing the country's stand against bilateral sporting ties with the neighbouring country after the gruesome Pahalagam terror attack. "The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announces that it is issuing a blanket ban from future participation in the World Championship of Legends (WCL)," the PCB said in a statement after its board of governors meeting held virtually under the chairmanship of Mohsin Naqvi. The PCB also took strong exception to the WCL's decision to award points to India despite the forfeiture, calling it "tainted with hypocrisy and bias." India and Pakistan had been slated to meet in the group stage, but the Indian side -- featuring Shikhar Dhawan, Yuvraj Singh, Irfan Pathan, Suresh Raina, and Harbhajan Singh -- refused to play, citing national sentiment following the terror attack and India's subsequent 'Operation Sindoor'. With India also pulling out of the semifinal, Pakistan advanced directly to the final. "The PCB reviewed with considerable disappointment WCL's appalling conduct of awarding points to a willfully forfeiting team, and the content of the press releases of the WCL announcing the cancellation of the scheduled India vs. Pakistan legends matches, which were tainted with hypocrisy and bias." Criticising the tournament's handling of the situation, the PCB said, "The cancellation was not based on cricketing merit but on appeasing a specific nationalistic narrative. This sends an unacceptable message to the international sporting community." The board further stated that it could not allow its players to participate in events where "the spirit of the game is overshadowed by skewed politics that undermine the very essence of sportsmanship and the gentleman's game." The WCL, which is co-owned by Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn, had earlier issued an apology for "hurting the feelings of many and stirring emotions" following the cancellation of the group stage match. "We sincerely apologise again for hurting the sentiments and hope people will understand that all we ever wanted was to bring a few happy moments to the fans," the WCL had said. The PCB, however, termed the apology "farcical," accusing the organisers of caving to "a specific nationalistic narrative." "The WCL's apology for "hurting the sentiments", whilst being farcical, inadvertently acknowledges that the cancellation was not based on cricketing merit, but rather on succumbing to a specific nationalistic narrative," the PCB said. "This bias, masquerading as sensitivity, sends an unacceptable message to the international sporting community." PCB said it had no choice but to implement the ban. "In light of this unfortunate development, which underscores a clear and intolerable pattern of external influence and a disregard for the principles of sporting neutrality, the Pakistan Cricket Board is compelled to take a firm stance. "The PCB can no longer condone participation in an event where the fundamental principles of fair play and unbiased administration are compromised by external pressures," it added. Sources in the know of things have indicated that WCL's Indian promoters were already considering dropping the Pakistan team from future editions of the tournament.

WATCH: Sunil Gavaskar went to Shubman Gill after he narrowly missed the record of being..., gives him a priceless gift of... New Delhi: India's Test skipper Shubman Gill may have narrowly missed rewriting history by breaking one of India's most iconic batting records, but he was rewarded with something equally priceless. At the end of Day 3 of the final Test at The Oval, a touching gesture by Sunil Gavaskar stole the spotlight — the legend handed Gill a personally signed cap and shirt, acknowledging his brilliant performances throughout the series. Gill Falls Just Short of Historic Mark Over the course of the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Gill compiled an impressive 754 runs across 10 innings, falling just 21 runs short of Gavaskar's long-standing Indian record of 774 runs in a Test series. Despite narrowly missing the milestone, Gill's consistency was pivotal in India staying competitive throughout. Gavaskar, a commentator during the series, stepped forward to personally honour the young captain with memorabilia — a rare and heartfelt tribute from one of the game's greatest names. Gavaskar's Special Words and 'Lucky Jacket' Presenting the cap to Gill, Gavaskar remarked, 'This cap is something I give only to a few.' He also mentioned that he would wear his 'lucky jacket' on the following day — the same one he wore during India's historic win at Brisbane in 2021, where Gill made a crucial 91 in the final innings. A wholesome moment between Shubman Gill & Sunil Gavaskar 😍#SonySportsNetwork #ENGvIND #NayaIndia #DhaakadIndia #TeamIndia #ExtraaaInnings | @ShubmanGill — Sony Sports Network (@SonySportsNetwk) August 2, 2025 Gill Breaks Another Record as Captain Although Gill registered scores of 21 and 11 in the final Test, he still managed to break a significant record. With 754 runs, he now holds the record for the most runs by an Indian captain in a single Test series, surpassing Gavaskar's 732 against the West Indies in the 1978–79 season — a benchmark that stood for nearly half a century. England Face Uphill Task on Day Four India have set England a challenging target of 374 runs in the fifth Test. England ended Day 3 at 50/1, losing Zak Crawley on the final ball of the day to Mohammed Siraj. As Day 4 begins, the pressure will be on England to withstand a fierce Indian pace attack, while India will look to claim the remaining nine wickets and push for a series-levelling victory.
