Arizona State QB Leavitt and Texas Tech LB Rodriguez are preseason Big 12 players of year
The Big 12 announced the awards, which are determined by a vote of media members who cover the league, the day before the Big 12 Football Media Days started in Frisco, Texas.
There was no preseason poll since the Big 12 discontinued that this year, joining the Big Ten as power conferences without one. The Big 12's move comes a year after then-newcomer Arizona State was picked to finish last in the 16-team league before going on to win the conference championship game.
Leavitt completed 216 of 350 passes (61.7%) for 2,885 yards with 24 touchdowns and six interceptions as a redshirt freshman last season when the Sun Devils made the 12-team College Football Playoff in their Big 12 debut. The former Michigan State transfer also ran for 443 yards and five TDs.
Rodriguez was the Big 12's leading tackler with 126 total tackles, and his 77 solo stops were also the most in the league. He had 7 1/2 tackles for loss, and all five of his sacks came in Big 12 play.
Utah quarterback Devon Dampier, a transfer from New Mexico, was selected as the Big 12's top newcomer. He was the Mountain West Conference leader last season with 3,934 total yards last season, 2,768 passing and 1,166 rushing.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — Tanzid Hasan Tamim's career-best half-century backed Bangladesh's eight-wicket win over Sri Lanka to clinch their three-match T20 series 2-1 on Wednesday. Sri Lanka won the first game by seven wickets and Bangladesh came back with a massive 83-run win to level the series. Sri Lanka scored a mediocre 132-7 in their 20 overs after captain Charith Asalanka won the toss and elected to bat first. Bangladesh replied with 133-2 with 21 deliveries to spare. Bangladesh lost their first wicket in the first ball of their innings when Sri Lankan fast bowler Nuwan Thushara trapped Parvez Hossain Emon lbw. Tamim and captain Litton Das held the Bangladesh innings together sharing a 74-run partnership for the second wicket in just 50 deliveries. Das made 32 before being caught by Kusal Perera off spin bowler Kamindu Mendis. Tamim and Towhid Hridoy joined in an unbroken 59-run stand and saw their team through to victory. Tamim finished with 73 not out to beat his previous best Twenty20 international score of 67 made against Zimbabwe last year. He hit six sixes and a boundary during his 47-ball innings. Hridoy remained unbeaten on 27. Earlier, Bangladesh off spin bowler Mehedi Hasan took a career best 4-11. Sri Lanka started its innings aggressively scoring 14 runs in the first over. However, Bangladesh fast bowler Shoriful Islam dismissed in-form batter Kusal Mendis (6) in the last ball of the over having him caught at deep-square-leg by Hridoy. Kusal Perera was out in the first ball edging Mehedi Hasan to Tamim at slip. Dinesh Chandimal also failed, being dismissed for 4 runs trying an aggressive shot against Mehedi to be caught by Jaker Ali. Asalanka (3) was stuck on the crease and played the wrong line against Mehedi and was bowled. Mehedi caught Pathum Nissanka, the top scorer for Sri Lanka with 46 runs, off his own bowling. He bettered his previous best bowling figures of 4-13 against the West Indies. Kamindu Mendis attempted to increase Sri Lanka's scoring rate with 21 runs in 15 deliveries while Dasun Shanaka remained not out on 35 off 25 deliveries. Kalen DeBoer is looking to escape Nick Saban's shadow and lead Tide back to playoffs in 2nd season
ATLANTA (AP) — Four years without a national championship feels like a severe drought for veteran Alabama players. Similarly, one year of missing the College Football Playoff has second-year coach Kalen DeBoer feeling the pressure to restore the Crimson Tide's status as one of the nation's top teams in 2025. When asked Wednesday at the Southeastern Conference media days if a 9-4 finish in his 2024 debut season met the Alabama standard, DeBoer said: 'I mean, if you internally ask us, no. We fell short of making the playoffs. It's as simple as that, right? Giving yourself a chance to go compete for a championship.' DeBoer's task is especially difficult because he's the coach who followed Nick Saban, who led Alabama to its last national championship in 2020. It was Alabama's sixth championship under Saban since 2009. Junior offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor said Wednesday the Crimson Tide players have endured a painful wait to reach the standard set by Saban. 'For the whole team honestly we obviously know that we haven't won a championship in a long time,' Proctor said. 'And that's everybody's goal at the end of the season.' Included in Alabama's 9-4 season under DeBoer was a 5-3 SEC mark that included road losses at Vanderbilt, Tennessee and Oklahoma. Alabama was No. 17 in the final AP Top 25 following a 19-13 loss to Michigan in the ReliaQuest Bowl in Tampa, Florida. DeBoer, who coached the 2023 Washington team to the national championship game, says added familiarity and continuity on his staff are reasons to expect improvement. Defensive lineman Tim Keenan said another reason the Crimson Tide will be better is players believe in DeBoer. Keenan hinted the shadow of Saban followed DeBoer in 2024. 'It's definitely changed,' Keenan said. 'You definitely see guys definitely bought in. If they're not here, no knock to them, but everyone who is here now, they believe in the system. They believe in Coach DeBoer.' Ryan Grubb, who worked on DeBoer's staff at Washington, was hired as Alabama's offensive coordinator after one season with the Seattle Seahawks. Keenan said he respects DeBoer for having the confidence to follow Saban. 'I know a lot of people say they want to do that, but they ain't got the courage enough to do it,' Keenan said. 'So I'm gonna go hard for my coach, always. 'Just, you know it's Coach Saban, like the greatest coach of all time. The GOAT. You know, greatest of all time. So to take that responsibility, saying. 'I'm going to take over for him now.' … I believe in him. And also, I know that God was going to put the right person in the right place at the right time, and he's in the right place at the right time.' DeBoer said Alabama 'fell short' last season. 'We've got to be better in the big moments,' DeBoer said. 'We lost some close games last year. Whether it was the belief or whether it was the confidence, a lot of that just comes through repetitions. We really had a great offseason understanding where we fell short, why we fell short. Not just the what and the how but the why. Pro-Palestinian protester takes issue with Israeli team at Tour de France
TOULOUSE, France (AP) — A man protesting the participation of an Israel-based team in the Tour de France ran onto the course as the leaders raced for the finish line on Wednesday. Norwegian rider Jonas Abrahamsen won the 11th stage in a photo finish just ahead of Swiss rider Mauro Schmid, but their final sprint was accompanied by a man running alongside who wore a T-shirt saying, 'Israel out of the Tour,' and who waved a keffiyeh, the black-and-white checkered headscarf that has become a potent symbol of the Palestinian cause. A security guard ran out to apprehend the man. The Israel-Premier Tech team is racing at this year's Tour with eight team members from other countries. The team acquired the right to enter the Tour de France in 2020 when Israel Start-Up National took over Katusha's WorldTour license and has since claimed three stage victories, though none yet in this year's race. Team members previously faced protests because of the team's association with Israel, which has killed more than 58,000 Palestinians in 21 months of war, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The war was sparked by the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel that killed some 1,200 people on Oct. 7, 2023.
