Rhino poacher caught in Kruger sentenced to 20 years in jail
The Skukuza regional court on Thursday sentenced Mozambican Nelson Sandile Sambo to an effective 20-year jail term for poaching-related offences.
Sambo, 43, was convicted on seven counts, including trespassing, killing a rhino and possession of a firearm.
'On December 2 2020, field rangers heard gunshots about the Stolzneck section (of the Kruger National Park) and started searching. They found Sambo and Gabriel Chauke in possession of fresh rhino horns, a firearm and ammunition,' said National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Monica Nyuswa.
Field rangers continued their search and discovered two rhino carcasses close to where the accused were apprehended.
Sambo and Chauke were granted bail and later absconded. Sambo was rearrested in 2023 but Chauke is still at large.
'During the trial, Sambo pleaded guilty to all seven counts and was subsequently convicted.'
In aggravation of sentence, prosecutor Lot Mgiba presented overwhelming DNA evidence found on Chauke's clothes linking him to the rhino carcasses. Positive DNA evidence showing that the bullet was fired from a firearm found in the accused's possession was also presented.
'The NPA welcomes the sentence and reaffirms its commitment to holding offenders accountable and protecting South Africa's wildlife for future generations,' said Nyuswa.

ANC Youth League SG Sindiso Magaqa's killer pleads guilty
Magaqa was shot in July 2017 and succumbed to his injuries after spending time in the hospital. Sibusiso Ncengwa, the fourth accused in the murder trial of former ANC Youth League secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa, has pleaded guilty. Ncengwa, Sbonelo Myeza, Mlungisi Ncalane and Mbulelo Mpofana are all charged with the murder of Magaqa. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said Ncalane was subsequently declared unfit to stand trial and is currently admitted to a psychiatric facility. Guilty plea Ramkisson-Kara said on 25 April 2023, four men were charged with the murder of Magaqa, and all pleaded not guilty to the charges against them. 'On 22 May 2025, Sibusiso Ncengwa (Accused 4) advised the court of his intention to plead guilty or make admissions in terms of Section 220 of the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1997. He also made an application for a separation of trials from his co-accused.' Ramkisson-Kara said the state opposed this application, and the case was remanded to 06 June 2025 for Ncengwa to make the Section 220 admissions. 'Ncengwa further admitted to malicious damage to property (the vehicles of Magaqa and others) and the joint unlawful possession of a firearm. 'In his admissions, Ncengwa outlined in detail the events leading up to Magaqa's death and the interactions he had with his co-accused, namely Myeza, Ncalane, and Mpofana. His admissions were accepted by the state, and these admissions amounted to a plea of guilty,' Ramkisson-Kara said. Sentencing Ramkisson-Kara said the court found Ncengwa guilty based on his admissions and convicted him accordingly. 'The case against Ncengwa was remanded to 30 June 2025 for sentencing. The case against Myeza and Mpofana will return to court on 19 June 2025 for a new indictment to be served on them as their matter has now been separated from that of accused 4 (Ncengwa).' Minor in deadly Brakpan crash in court to face culpable homicide charge
A 12-year-old boy appeared in the Brakpan magistrate's court in the presence of his guardian to face charges of culpable homicide and driving a motor vehicle without a licence. 'It is alleged that on Saturday at about 1pm, the minor was driving his parents' vehicle at the corner of Madeley and Northdene streets when he drove over a 14-year-old boy and bumped into a wall,' National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said. The 14-year-old boy was declared dead on the scene. The 12-year-old was then taken to the Brakpan police station and later released into the care of his parents on Sunday. Political parties demand Batohi's accountability amid NPA sabotage allegations

Image: Henk Kruger National prosecutions boss Shamila Batohi is facing renewed criticism from several parties, including the EFF, the uMkhonto weSizwe Party and ActionSA, over her recent statements about sabotage within the NPA. Last week Batohi, responding to criticism over several embarrassing defeats in high-profile cases said there had been "infiltration" of the prosecution service, but later backtracked, saying she had used the wrong term and instead that certain cases were being deliberately sabotaged. Despite the backtracking by Batohi, the parties remain unconvinced and are demanding accountability, saying if there is sabotage then this happened under her watch and she should take responsibility by stepping down. The MK Party on Monday expressed concern over Batohi's statements, emphasising the need for transparency and accountability within the NPA. 'We are the first ones to call for her (Batohi) head. Next Stay Close ✕ Last week the EFF wrote to National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza, requesting an urgent debate on what it believes is an institutional crisis at the NPA. This comes after the NPA was dealt a major blow in the case against former ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule when the court ruled that the extradition from the US of his former PA, Moroadi Colota, was invalid. The NPA has also been slammed for bungling the case against Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso, who was acquitted on more than 30 charges of sexual assault. The NPA's failure to secure the extradition of the Gupta brothers, nearly a decade after the Gupta Leaks scandal, has also raised questions about the authority's effectiveness. The EFF said Batohi's remarks suggest undue influence is being exerted on the NPA, compromising its ability to secure justice and accountability. "This is not a casual institutional complaint. It is a constitutional red flag of the highest order," the EFF said. "An assertion from the NDPP herself that the NPA has been infiltrated should send shockwaves throughout every organ of state," the letter read. ActionSA parliamentary leader Athol Trollip called for Batohi's immediate removal, citing the NPA's repeated failures in high-profile cases. "The NPA has become a refuge for politically connected individuals, a place where accountability is avoided, justice is delayed, and prosecutions collapse with shocking regularity. "Under Batohi's leadership, the NPA reels from one scandal to the next. South Africans are left wondering if these failures are merely a result of incompetence, or is there a deliberate agenda to protect the corrupt,' Trollip said. NPA spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga did not answer questions on Monday. Batohi had said that if she felt she was underperforming, then she would step down immediately. The DA has also expressed concerns about the NPA's failures but has stopped short of calling for Batohi's removal. Instead, the party wants Batohi to explain the failures. The DA last week announced a reform package aimed at rescuing the NPA and restoring justice for victims of corruption. According to the DA, the NPA is currently "broken" and has failed to secure successful prosecutions in high-profile corruption cases. To address these issues, the DA's Spokesperson on Justice and Constitutional Development, Glynnis Breytenbach, proposes a series of reforms.
