Weight loss drugs could give you more control over your drinking, say experts
Could taking popular GLP-1 weight loss drugs help curb alcohol use? Well, researchers say they already are.
Taking semaglutide and liraglutide — a lesser-known active ingredient — medications for weight loss cut their consumption by nearly two-thirds in just four months.
The findings are good news in the fight against alcohol use disorder. Excessive drinking can harm the liver and other organs, in addition to increasing the risk of several types of cancer. In the U.S., approximately 178,000 people die from excessive alcohol use each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More than 20,000 people die from alcohol-related cancers.
'GLP-1 analogues have been shown treat obesity and reduce the risk of multiple obesity-related complications. Now, the beneficial effects beyond obesity, such as on alcohol intake, are being actively studied, with some promising results,' Carel le Roux, a professor at University College Dublin, said in a statement.
Le Roux is one of the co-author of the work, alongside colleagues in Ireland and Saudi Arabia. The research was published this month in the journal Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism.
To reach these conclusions, they examined more than 260 patients who were being treated for obesity at an Irish clinic. Of those, nearly 80 percent were women, 179 of whom drank alcohol regularly. Their average weight was over 200 pounds.
However, just 188 of patients were tracked for an average of four months. None of them increased their alcohol intake and their average alcohol decreased from 11.3 units a week to just 4.3 units. A bottle of wine contains 10 units.
Regular drinkers saw a reduction of 68 percent, which is comparable to a drug used to treat alcohol use disorder, the authors said.
But, just how does it work? Well, more research needs to be done, but Le Roux said 'it is thought to involve curbing cravings for alcohol that arise in subcortical areas of the brain that are not under conscious control. Thus, patients report the effects are 'effortless.''
The semaglutide drugs mimic a hormone that targets appetite regulating areas of the brain. Millions of Americans use the drugs, which other researchers have found may come with surprising health benefits. One recent study has found semaglutide treats liver disease in two-thirds of patients. A study released on Tuesday found oral treatments can mimic the metabolic effects of gastric bypass surgery.

Park Rangers then started searching for the duo on Monday, when they found Tim and Esther's car parked in a lot for daily use. Search efforts then widened on Tuesday, leading to a K9 team discovering Tim's body near the summit at around 2.45pm, park rangers announced on social media. 'We know that many of our social media followers share in our deep sadness for the family and friends of Tim Keiderling and appreciate your support as teams continue the search for Esther,' park rangers wrote. Tim is now being remembered on social media as a loving father and grandfather, who shared great stories and taught others how to be beekeeper. 'No one has a brother like mine,' his brother Joe said in a statement to Maine's Total Coverage. 'Tim lived exuberantly. He loved life, loved people, loved God. He was a storyteller like no one I've known with a rich sense of humor. 'He left us far too soon,' Joe continued. 'My heart is broken for his wife and children.' He further told Bangor Daily News that Tim 'was a father, brother, husband [and] grandfather who loved life, loved people, loved God.' 'Our family is so grateful to the park rangers, state police, all the interagency first responders who searched for my brother,' Joe continued. 'They have our prayers as they continue to search for Esther.' A tribute on social media from Bruderhof Communities, a communal Anabaptist Christian movement, also said Tim 'loved Jesus and is now in eternity with Him. 'We continue to pray for Esther and hope she is found soon,' it added. One person who commented on the post said Tim and his wife, Annemarie, were her teachers, and their other daughter, Katherine, was her best friend. 'I have many great memories with them,' she wrote. Former ESPN host and best-selling author John Brenkus died from suicide, a medical examiner has confirmed. TMZ said that the Virginia Department of Health, Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed the tragic nature of the 54-year-old's death last week. When the Brenkus family announced the news of his passing on Sunday, they alluded to the nature of his death by saying he had been fighting depression. The statement said: 'It is with profound sadness that we share the news that John Brenkus has passed away. 'John, co-founder of Base Productions, Founder of and co-creator and host of the six-time Emmy award-winning "Science," had been battling depression. 'John lost his fight with this terrible illness on May 31, 2025. His heartbroken family and friends request privacy at this time, and encourage anyone who is struggling with depression to seek help.' Back in January 2023, during an interview with ex-NFL player Marcellus Wiley, Brenkus opened up on his mental health struggles. 'I fell into a very deep depression,' he said. 'I spiraled into a deep, deep depression and I was flat-out suicidal.' Brenkus revealed that his dog saved his life. '(He) came to my rescue... and in my suicidal funk, I was like: "What am I doing?" I literally picked up my phone, called my mom and said: "There's something wrong with me. I am mentally lost."' Brenkus then detailed his 'battle' for 'answers' which involved seeing multiple different psychologists and psychiatrists.
