New Delhi: Asian Development Bank (ADB) President Masato Kanda on Friday said the multilateral funding agency stands ready to provide up to USD 4.5 billion sovereign lending to India each year."Yesterday I met Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi to deepen ADB's partnership with India and advance Prime Minister Narendra Modi 's Viksit Bharat 2047 vision ," Kanda said in a post on X."ADB stands ready to provide between USD 4 billion and USD 4.5 billion in sovereign lending each year, alongside about USD 1 billion in private sector financing, while mobilising additional third-party capital," he said.ADB agreed to move quickly on large, high-impact projects, such as the bank's support for solar rooftops, which can accelerate clean energy adoption across the country, he said."Our shared agenda centres on urban transformation, private sector development, and skills programs that strengthen India's manufacturing base," he said.At the minister's request, ADB will also sharpen support for integrated rural prosperity by transforming food systems, creating jobs, and nurturing local entrepreneurship, so villages become resilient communities, he said.During the meeting with Kanda on Thursday, Sitharaman had urged for deeper ADB support for integrated rural prosperity measures, including creation of jobs and local entrepreneurship, and fostering innovation in agriculture, to transform villages into resilient communities."ADB will pair global expertise with catalytic finance, de-risking tools, and robust PPP frameworks to unlock private investment. Our partnership will create a prosperous, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable India by 2047, ensuring that progress reaches every city and village," he said.

Engineering education is at the heart of this shift. According to the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the number of approved B. Tech seats for the 2024-25 academic year has risen to 14.9 lakh--a nearly 16 per cent increase over four years. This growth is largely driven by a more than 50 per cent rise in seats for Computer Science and allied streams such as AI/ML, Data Science, Cybersecurity, Cloud Computing, and Blockchain--mirroring strong industry demand. India's tech education landscape is increasingly embracing interdisciplinary and industry-integrated learning to nurture a new generation of engineers who can code, create, collaborate, and lead innovation. The transition from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) to STEAM, adding Arts to the mix, is gaining ground, blending technical knowledge with design thinking, communication, psychology, law, and business. "The surge in demand for AI professionals' stems from rapid technological progress. As AI reshapes productivity, operations, and innovation, preparing a future-ready workforce is imperative. Zydus Lifesciences receives USFDA tentative approval for Rifaximin Tablets
Zydus Lifesciences has received tentative approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) for Rifaximin Tablets, 550 mg (USRLD: Xifaxan Tablets, 550 mg). Rifaximin tablets are indicated for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhoea (IBS-D) in adults. Rifaximin tablets will be produced at the Group's manufacturing site at SEZ II, Ahmedabad. Rifaximin tablets had annual sales of USD $2672.9 mn in the United States (IQVIA MAT March 2025).

Good news very soon on India-Oman trade agreement: Piyush Goyal
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has said that negotiations between India and Oman for the proposed free trade agreement (FTA) are progressing, and some "good news" may come "very soon" on that. The negotiations received a much-needed impetus after the visit of Goyal to Muscat in January this year. The talks for the agreement, officially dubbed as the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), formally began in November 2023. "I think you will see some good news very soon on the Oman FTA," the minister told reporters here when asked whether the FTA talks with Oman can be concluded this year. Goyal is here on an official visit to hold talks with French leaders and businesses to boost trade and investments. He will also attend a mini-ministerial meeting of the World Trade Organization (WTO) on June 3. In such agreements, two trading partners either significantly reduce or eliminate customs duties on a maximum number of goods traded between them. They also ease norms to promote trade in services and attract investments. Live Events Oman is the third-largest export destination among the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries for India. India already has a similar agreement with another GCC member UAE which came into effect in May 2022. The bilateral trade was about USD 10.5 billion (exports USD 4 billion and imports USD 6.54 billion) in 2024-25. India's key imports are petroleum products and urea. These account for over 70 per cent of imports. Other key products are propylene and ethylene polymers, pet coke, gypsum, chemicals, and iron and steel. Taking about such agreements, the minister said these FTAs not just promote trade in goods and services, but also strengthen supply chain, bring confidence in businesses of both sides about stable polices, and predictability. "So in a way, it's a big message when you conclude an FTA," he added. When asked if India could see further domestic reforms as a result of these agreements, the minister said FTA stands on their own footing and have no relationship to "our own" domestic efforts to make the country more attractive. "These agreements are more towards opening markets on both sides which lead to greater competitiveness, improved productivity and efficiency in all processes," he said. Goyal said the National Manufacturing Mission, announced in the Budget, may come up soon. It will further bring an "orderly shape" to how states and the Centre work together in the direction of promoting manufacturing in India, he added. Economic Times WhatsApp channel )
