My dad said our last minute activity was the best Father's Day gift ever
If you're looking for last minute Father's Day presents, booking an activity to spend quality time together is perfect – and you can currently save up to 75% at Virgin Experience Days
With Father's Day inching closer, those of you who are a little less organised are probably scrambling around looking for the perfect last minute gift to give him. Rather than the usual whisky or tie or box of chocolates, this year I decided to try something different. I booked us both an activity with Virgin Experience Days, which not only saved me from next day delivery fees and wrapping paper, but also meant I got to create a fantastic memory with my dad.
There were so many things to choose from, and there's even better news for you last minute panic buyers like me – because there's currently up to 75% off selected activities, as well as a 20% saving on almost every experience when you use the code DAD20 between now and Father's Day on Sunday.
My dad is a major foodie, so for me booking something meal adjacent was a must. I managed to track down a nine course tasting menu at one of our favourite restaurants in Newcastle – SIX Rooftop at the Baltic Art Gallery.
Having already enjoyed a meal there earlier this year with my mum for Mother's Day, after seeing my dad's disappointment at missing out the first time I knew it was something he'd love. It was so simple and straightforward to book, you just chose the date that you wanted (I also highly recommend booking the chef's table, where the chefs talk you through each course and how it was made), pay at checkout and you're done.
Although I booked it to coincide with actual Father's Day, you could just as easily book your activity for a future date, and show him the Virgin Experience Days booking confirmation on Father's Day itself – that way you both still have something fun to do together to look forward to. This means it's perfect for those last minute gift ideas, as you can have it booked and ordered in minutes, and your dad gets double the celebrations.
It also means when it comes to it, you don't need to worry about paying or putting money to the side for it as it's already sorted, so you can just get on with enjoying the day together. After our super indulgent meal together, my dad informed me that not only was it the best Father's Day present he's ever had, but one of the best things he's ever done – like, ever.
He also said it meant more to him because it was all about us spending time together (doing something he enjoyed, naturally) and the memory of it would be something he'd really treasure… much more impactful than a pair of socks and some beers! So, not to toot my own horn, but I think I nailed it this Father's Day.
There's also so many other activities out there, from brewery tours and driving simulators for the lads dads, but also cooking classes, spa trips, fine dining and amazing excursions to suit the dads who prefer something a little more low key. There's even things like golf lessons with a pro and football stadium tours for sports lovers, sky diving lessons for daredevils, and historical tours for history buffs.
Things will vary depending on your area, of course, but there is definitely no shortage of things to choose from even for us living in the North East, and there's something to suit any budget. Everything is booked and organised for you via the site, so it makes it easy and stress free too – ideal for doing in a hurry at the last minute!
Of course there's other activity-focussed sites to shop around on too, including BuyAGift from Moonpig, Red Letter Days and the Activity Superstore. They all also feature the kind of activities any dad would love, from race car driving and theme park tickets, to overnight luxury yacht stays and paintballing.

Laura welcomed daughter Bonnie, whom she shares with ex Gary, in 2023. The couple had an on-and-off relationship, but things are now on bad terms with Laura even branding Gary a "deadbeat dad". Last month Gary seemingly reignited his feud with his Celebs Go Dating ex Laura after warning that "dads matter". The former Footballers' Wives star made the apparent dig while sharing a throwback video of himself and his son Theodore, six. Gary had been filmed in a restaurant as he sat next to Theodore and they could be seen giggling about "spicy" food together. The actor then gently grabbed his son's cheeks and said: "Look at that face, that gorgeous face.." The video finished with Gary giving Theodore a kiss. Gary, 43, shared the footage on Instagram but seemed to have also made a swipe at Laura, 36, in the process. Laura has taken aim at Gary several times in the past over Bonnie being snapped with her dad rarely. Laura Anderson shows off luxury trip with boyfriend Reigniting the row himself, Gary cryptically captioned his video: "Good enough to eat … Gorgeous Boy #dadsmatter." Replying, one follower asked: "Thought you had a girl with Laura..?" Gary shares Theodore with his ex-wife Natasha. They are also parents to India, 18, Elvis, 12 and Sadie, seven. In August 2024, Gary shared a video of himself with Bonnie With Laura hitting out: "Instead of posting videos of the one time you saw your daughter this year, can you please reply to my text from 2weeks ago please, that would be great". Laura marked Bonnie's birthday in September 2024 as she referenced her "beautiful daughter" When someone asked where her relationship with Gary stands, Laura replied: "No matter what Gary has done and not done I will always respect him as Bonnie's father and I hope one day he is capable of being the father she deserves." Stephanie Davis splits with partner days before Father's Day in latest heartbreak
The actress welcomed her second child just five months ago. Coronation Street actress Stephanie Davis split with her partner Joseph McKalroy ahead of Father's Day. The pair welcomed their son, Samuel back in January after being together for three years. And today to mark Father's Day, Steph shared a photo of her own father with a heartfelt caption, thanking him for helping with her two sons Caben and Samuel, adding "there aren't many men like you", and made no mention of Joseph. Fans took to the comments of her heartfelt post and asked: "Where's Joe?" while another said: "I think they have split up". A third agreed, saying: "I think so too as they both had each others name on their bios with a heart, which they don't anymore. It's such a shame if they have as they were a gorgeous little family!" Back in January, when Joe and Stephanie became parents to their son, Samuel, the proud dad penned the caption of an Instagram post, sharing a snap of his baby son, which read: "Welcome to the world my beautiful baby boy Samuel McKalroy. "Named after your uncle the one and only who will always weigh heavy on my heart I wish so much that he could've met you and cherished you as much as I do. "It has been a traumatic experience but you are finally here in our arms. I never thought I could possibly love your mummy anymore than I already do but this is just so special and an unconditional love I cannot explain with words. "I love you more than you will ever know". Stephanie, who shares seven-year-old son Caben with former CBB star Jeremy McConnell, responded: 'Sobbing reading this my heart. I love you more than anything in this world. I couldn't love you more I'm so blessed to have you as a daddy to our boys xx. You carried me though that, it was so tough. I love you more than you will ever know xxxxxxxx." In 2022, Stephanie revealed she had suffered a devastating miscarriage three months into her pregnancy, heartbreakingly sharing she woke up one morning and 'didn't feel pregnant anymore'. Admitting that she and Joe were "heartbroken", she said: "The anxiety, the heartbreak and the sadness we have gone through was horrendous. Me and Joe were so excited and already had visioned and planned a life with our family of four. "I was already looking at what I was doing for my baby shower. You think when you get further on like I was that everything will be ok, so it was a big shock." Before meeting Joe, the actress had a turbulent romance with Irish model, Jeremy, after they met on Celebrity Big Brother. Jeremy was found guilty of assaulting his then ex-girlfriend Stephanie in 2017. McConnell, then 27, attacked Miss Davis at her home in Rainhill, Merseyside while she was holding their baby son, Liverpool Magistrates' Court heard. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
