All it needs is attitude adjustment to become a good fielding side: Haddin
Sydney, Jun 28 (PTI) Former Australia keeper-batter Brad Haddin believes the Indian team, led by Shubman Gill, needs an "attitude adjustment" as the visitors try to find a way out of their fielding woes in the ongoing five-Test series in England.
Indian fielders, especially Yashasvi Jaiswal, dropped several catches as Gill's side lost the opening Test at Headingley by five wickets to go 0-1 down against Ben Stokes' team.
The 47-year-old Haddin, who played 66 Tests and scored more than 6,500 runs across formats for Australia, said that all the great cricket teams across different eras had good fielding as their distinguishing feature.
"Every great team, no matter what era you are playing, the one standout they've always had... they've been great fielding teams. And, I think, that's the one legacy (Shubman) Gill can start to leave now on this team," said Haddin in his Willow Talk podcast.
"It needs an attitude adjustment if you want to field well and compete the whole time, it's only attitude," Haddin added.
Young opener Jaiswal, who was fielding in the slips and gully region, crucial catches off the bowling of Jasprit Bumrah, leaving the pace spearhead frustrated.
Indicating that Indian players' poor fielding was evident during this year's Indian Premier League, Haddin said the catching had left a lot to be desired during the two-month-long T20 tournament.
"In the IPL this year, the catching was horrible. Yes, we talk about talented bowlers, batsmen, but it was the catching that was a real problem."
He said that there was nothing stopping India from becoming the best fielding side in the world given the kind of talent they had.
"And the one thing I'd say to India, is find a way to be the best fielding team in the world because you've got the talent everywhere else," he said.
India will hope to overcome their shortcoming and level the series when the second Test gets underway in Birmingham on July 2.

London, June 28 (UNI) India's star opener was excited to see the debutants experience English conditions for the first time which would prepare them well for the ICC Women's T20 World Cup to be held in England next year. Indian vice-captain Smriti Mandhana said the five-match T20I series against England would serve as crucial preparation for the T20 World Cup, set to be held in the same conditions next year. Mandhana believes it offers India a valuable opportunity to acclimatise to English conditions ahead of the marquee event. "Since we have a T20 World Cup next year around the same time, around the summer of UK, which is again similar conditions, I'm sure the five T20Is will be a good prep for a lot of the girls and for us also to see to the conditions and how they suit our game too.' One of the key challenges for this Indian side will be the relative inexperience of players touring England for the first time. Youngsters like Kranti Gaud and Sree Charani are set to make their debut on English soil, and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana believes that the extended preparation period in these conditions will be crucial in helping the entire squad adapt and perform well. "It's been a good 25 days of prep, we had batters and bowlers camp at Bangalore at NCA and that was also very targeted and specific, keeping in mind this tour," Mandhana said. "Of course, we came a little earlier here, good eight days of prep, a few good practice matches, we got to know a lot of things about the England conditions. For a lot of girls, it's their first England tour so it was important for them to come here early and get used to the conditions," Opener Smriti Mandhana was full of praise for her opening partner Shafali Verma, who had returned to the squad after a lean patch that had led to her omission from the T20I setup in late 2024. Shafali made a strong statement with the bat during the Women's Premier League (WPL), finishing as the fourth-highest run-scorer with 304 runs at a blistering strike rate of 152.76. "She's had an amazing year. Once the setback had come, she went to domestic cricket, scored bucket-loads of runs and had an amazing WPL. No one had any doubts about her talent, the way she had come into the Indian team and dominated.' said Mandhana. Shafali also enjoyed a dominant domestic season, emerging as the leading run-scorer in the Senior Women's One-Day Trophy with 527 runs at an average of 75.29, and topping the charts in the Senior Women's One-Day Challenger Trophy as well, scoring 414 runs at an impressive average of 82.8. 'She is a world-class player and always will be, but for her to go back and do what she did in the last year was amazing to watch. She deserves this comeback and I'm really excited to open with her again." Being one of the most experienced members of the Indian setup, Smriti Mandhana expressed her excitement about the new-look pace attack set to feature against England. With regulars Renuka Singh Thakur, Pooja Vastrakar, and Titas Sadhu ruled out due to injury, the attack will be led by Arundathi Reddy. ECB managing director of men's cricket, Rob Key, dropped a subtle hint about tearaway Jofra Archer 's return in the forthcoming second Test against India in Birmingham, which is scheduled to kick off on Wednesday. Archer returned to England's Test fold for the first time since February 2021 after being named in the 14-player squad for the contest at Edgbaston. His inclusion comes in the aftermath of his return to first-class action in the County Championship on Sunday for the first time in more than four years. The 30-year-old, known to test the speed gun with his scorching pace, scalped a solitary wicket and struck 31 runs with the bat in 34 deliveries for Durham against Sussex in the County Championship. Archer's last appearance dates back to England's 10-wicket defeat by India in Ahmedabad in February 2021, following which numerous injuries plagued him and kept the promising speedster out of the format. While Archer's inclusion has left former cricketers and fans with split opinions, Key hinted at the prospect of the right-arm seamer charging at the Indian batters with his blistering pace at Edgbaston. "I would imagine [that he will play at least one of the next two Tests]. As I stand here now, that's where it's heading, but who knows? He could bowl the first ball of the [Edgbaston] Test. All options are available. The amount of work Jofra has put in over the last six months almost... There is a point where your [bowling] loads are there because of the building up you've been doing," Key said as quoted from Sky Sports. "We have to be careful with all of our bowlers but if you didn't want bowlers to get injured you would never play them. That's not what it's about. It's about getting your bowlers out there as much as possible so they can impact games of cricket," he added. If Archer fails to make the cut for the final XI, Archer could appear in the final stages of Sussex's next Championship fixture at home to Warwickshire, which will take place from Sunday to Wednesday at Hove. In 13 Test appearances, Archer has scythed 42 wickets at 31.04. "There is a chance he could play in the Championship if we think that is the best thing or it might be that if he doesn't play at Edgbaston having him around is the best thing," he said. While Archer's return to County didn't glisten with magical numbers, Key feels the 30-year-old managed to achieve his potential and added, "It was a question of could he hit his straps and could he get up to a decent pace, which we felt he did.
