Law enforcement officers arrested for 'kidnapping, extortion' in Cape Town
The officers, attached to the metal theft unit, allegedly kidnapped two men in Khayelitsha and demanded a ransom for their release, said safety and security MMC JP Smith. The arrests were carried out after an internal investigation by the city's safety and security investigations unit which alerted the police.
' Search warrants were obtained on Monday and the officers were arrested earlier today, in collaboration with the SAPS provincial kidnapping and extortion task team.
'The city takes a dim view of any attempts at dishonesty and illegal behaviour on the part of staff. We will co-operate with police to ensure a swift conclusion to the investigation and prosecution,' said Smith.
The officers also face disciplinary hearings.
'The management of the safety and security directorate are committed to rid the department of corrupt and criminal elements and will not hesitate to investigate and take the required action when wrongdoing is uncovered.'

A group of unknown suspects broke the window of their car with bricks and brutally assaulted Cameron and his colleagues. The quick-thinking Police Portfolio Committee Chairperson retaliated with his own firearm, firing shots at the suspects. A bloodied Cameron suffered broken teeth and required facial stitches. His colleagues sustained minor head and neck injuries. Ian Cameron believes that it was a targeted attack on himself. He posted on his X account: 'This was a serious and deliberate attack, and it underscores the risks faced during oversight work. But incidents like this will not deter us. 'OUT OF CONTROL CRIME' The DA condemned the attack, calling on police to increase their presence in high-crime areas. The party's Chief Whip, George Michalakis, told IOL: 'This incident is a portrayal of the out-of-control crime that South Africans face daily. No one is exempt from it. Traffic officers and colleagues bring hope to Khutsong disability home
A group of traffic officers and other officials joined forces this week to bring relief to a Khutsong care facility. On August 18, traffic officers from the Merafong City Local Municipality, Rand West, and Mogale City were joined by members of the Gauteng Traffic Police, SAPS, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, and officials from the Department of Correctional Services for a special outreach programme. The group gathered at the Zanele Mtshali Disability Home in Khutsong, also known as the Zani Home, as part of the Western Corridor Women's Month celebrations. They donated food, toiletries, and blankets to the facility, which provides care for severely disabled residents, many of whom have no other place to call home. Located near the Khutsong Community Hall, the Zanele Mtshali Disability Home has long served as a vital refuge for the vulnerable. The donation was welcomed as a meaningful gesture of solidarity and community support.

Tragedy at DUT as student falls from campus building
Tragedy struck at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) Steve Biko campus on Tuesday when a student fell to his death from a building. KZNVIP Protection Services spokesperson Gareth Naidoo said it was understood a student fell from a campus building. 'Authorities are yet to confirm details,' he said. DUT confirmed the incident on its Facebook page. 'DUT is shocked and saddened by the loss of one of our students in Durban this morning [Tuesday]. We convey our condolences to the family, friends and classmates of the young man who has passed away.' The university said police were investigating. 'The name of the student will be released once the next-of-kin have been informed. 'The university has made counselling support available to students and staff.
