The best tour operators, according to you

Telegraph3 days ago
Around 20,000 readers voted in the 2025 Telegraph Travel Awards, nominating their favourite destinations, hotels and holiday companies – and the results are in. Here we reveal your top tour operators, ferry companies and car hire providers.
Best Tour Operator
Audley Travel
Trailfinders
Cox & Kings
Having crowned our table many times over the last decade, Audley once again takes the top spot for best tour operator. Given its offering of complex itineraries in adventurous destinations aimed at travellers with large budgets, such consistency is extremely impressive. It offers travel arrangements all over the world and this year adds some new offerings at three of Telegraph readers' favourite countries.
Tapping into an appetite for discovering the lesser-known and less crowded areas in popular destinations, these include itineraries to the Dolomites in Italy, the Toyama region of Japan and a new hiking holiday along the new Hump Ridge Track, which opened in New Zealand's South Island Fjordland last October.
Meanwhile, another extraordinarily consistent performer and former winner of our awards, Trailfinders, gains a place over last time to finish as your second favourite operator. Another long-haul specialist with an even longer pedigree, Cox & Kings, comes in at number three.
Best Specialist Tour Operator
Llama Travel
McKinlay Kidd
Inntravel
Topping this category for the first time, Llama Travel was founded in 2002 as a Latin American specialist by Luca Newbold, who lived in Peru for four years and was the son of a former managing director of Thomson Holidays (now Tui). His aim was to offer 'the best possible holidays at the best possible prices' and it is a mantra which has paid off as far as Telegraph readers are concerned. The company expanded its range and now also offers holidays to Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Europe.
In second place, McKinlay Kidd is that unusual animal, a high-end tour operator that has made a success offering holidays in the British Isles, and especially in Scotland. The offer ranges from island-hopping breaks to tours by train and car and trips focussed on wildlife watching or gourmet breaks. Inntravel is rated third best specialist by readers. Its aim is to offer interesting ways to explore mostly European destinations and its mantra is 'slow travel'. Many of its self-guided itineraries involve cycling or walking, though it also has a portfolio of journeys by car, train and boat.
Best Escorted Tour Operator
HF Holidays
G Adventures
Explore
HF Holidays takes top place, 11 years after it last won this category. The company was founded in 1913 and is one of Britain's longest-established tour operators. Founder Thomas Arthur Leonard's original mission was to improve the lives of factory workers by helping them get out and enjoy the countryside, and that ethos is still reflected in the company today.
It's stated aim is 'to provide shared holiday experiences that inspire friendship, fun and an active enjoyment of the great outdoors.' Though still mainly focussed on walking breaks in the UK, over the decades the programme has expanded to include escorted (and some independent) tours, treks and special interest breaks in some 80 destinations, as well as activity breaks in some 15 country houses which it owns and operates in British National Parks and National Landscapes (formerly AONBs).
Meanwhile, G Adventures moves down a place after winning in 2023. Founded by a Canadian entrepreneur, Bruce Poon Tip, in 1990 with a small offering of trips in Latin America, it now offers nearly 1,000 tours in over 100 countries. Explore!, another specialist long-haul operator of group itineraries with a huge range of destinations, comes in third.
Best Rail Holiday Company
Belmond
The Railway Touring Company
Tailor Made Rail
The growing popularity of rail-based holidays has played into the hands of luxury operator Belmond, which runs a fleet of iconic trains in destinations around the world and, in the opinion of Telegraph Travel readers, continues to deliver exceptionally high standards. This year's result marks a return to the number one slot which it last held in 2018.
The best known of its trains is the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, with the original 1920s dining cars, which run on Paris to Venice and Paris to Istanbul routings. But the company also owns the Eastern & Oriental Express in Malaysia, the Andean Explorer and Hiram Bingham in Peru, and three classic trains in Britain – the Royal Scotsman, the British Pullman and, new this year, the sleeper train, the Britannic Explorer.
In second place, The Railway Touring Company offers a broad range of escorted tours on famous trains and routes in Europe and beyond as well as a selection of day trips in this country featuring famous steam engines such as the Flying Scotsman. At number three, Tailor Made Rail, as its name suggests, specialises in making arrangements for independent travellers.
Best Ferry Line
Brittany Ferries
Stena Line
DFDS
If you have a sense of déjà-vu reading this result, it is not surprising. Brittany Ferries has an extraordinary record in our travel awards, topping our poll of cross-channel operators year in, year out since our travel awards first began in 1998. There was just one blip on its record – when it was pipped to first place by the now-defunct SpeedFerries in 2005. It is a record unmatched by any other travel company in any other category of our awards.
So what is the secret of the French-run operator's popularity with Telegraph readers? Certainly, it offers some lovely routes – longer, more relaxing crossings from Portsmouth, Plymouth and Poole to attractive destinations on the Brittany and Normandy coasts as well as the 24-hour 'mini cruises' across the Bay of Biscay to Bilbao or Santander. But its consistent delivery of excellent food on comfortable, well-presented ships over decades leaves it streets ahead of its cross-Channel rivals.
As in 2023, Stena Line – with services between Harwich and the Hook of Holland and across the Irish Sea – came second, and DFDS is the runner up to Brittany Ferries on cross-Channel routes.
Best Car Hire Operator
Zest Car Rental
Auto Reisen
Cicar
This is a highly impressive performance by the car hire broker Zest, which heads this category for the first time after last time coming third. Norfolk-based Zest offers hire cars in dozens of countries around the world and, as a broker, strikes deals with individual suppliers in each destination. Its success seems to be based on a combination of good customer service, competitive pricing and clear information when it comes to one of the biggest bugbears in the car hire market – insurance charges.
As part of the booking process it offers the option of top-up insurance at £5 per day. This protects you against high excess payments if you have an accident so that you don't have to pay through the nose when you pick up then car from the local agent.
In second place is Canary Island specialist Auto Reisen, which won this award in 2023 and in 2019. It remains an excellent option for anyone going to Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria or Fuerteventura. Third is Cicar – another consistent performer – which also focuses on the Canaries but now also offers rentals in the rest of Spain.
Best Ski Operator
Peak Retreats
Club Med
Neilson
According to the latest research from the Mountain Trade Network (MTN), 42 per cent of British skiers state that price significantly impacted their plans last winter – a three-year high. It has never been more important, then, for operators to offer not only competitive prices, but also value to their customers. The podium at this year's awards demonstrates the lengths to which businesses are going to encourage Britons to head to the slopes.
For the third time running – having been named best ski operator in 2019 and 2023 – French specialists Peak Retreats took the top spot, proving the enduring popularity of self-catered ski holidays. The operator now offers packages to over 70 French resorts, ranging from traditional off-the-beaten-track villages to high-altitude favourites. It continues to expand its portfolio too, with new accommodation options in Serre Chevalier featuring a wellness centre, snow-sure rooms in Tignes and ski-in/ski-out access in La Rosière for winter 2025/26.
Second place went to all-inclusive specialist Club Med, now 75 years old. It's easy to comprehend the appeal of an operator that includes meals, drinks, accommodation and travel in its headline price, but also ski essentials too such as lift passes and lessons. Neilson completes the line-up this year, an operator that has been taking Britons to the slopes for over four decades.

Popular Brit tourist hotspot BANS walking barefoot, picnics and drinking booze on streets in brutal crackdown

A popular British tourist hotspot has banned walking barefoot, picnics, and drinking booze on the streets among a swathe of other prohibitions in a brutal crackdown. Holidaymakers visiting Portofino, a small coastal town on the Italian Riviera in Liguria, are now facing fines for carrying out a variety of actions typically seen abroad. Starting today, travellers in Portofino will no longer be able to walk through the town barefoot, in swimwear, or topless - or sit in the piazza in any of these conditions. Consuming alcohol on public streets has also been prohibited, with only restaurants, bars, and designated areas left to booze in. Begging, sitting, or lying on the streets, walls, sidewalks and parks have also been banned along with having picnics. The new ordinance, signed by Mayor Matteo Viacava, will take effect during the summer season and temporarily expire on September 30. Anyone who is caught violating the regulations before then will be subject to a fine of between £22 and £433. The goal of the latest crackdown is to protect the 'peace and quiet of residents and tourists' in the exclusive coastal resort which brings in up to 100,000 tourists during peak season - despite the town only having a population of 400. The municipality had already attempted to combat troublesome tourists in 2023. During that period, stopping at particularly popular viewpoints across the picturesque town was prohibited. In another Italian coastal town, the port city of Diano Marina, the mayor, Cristiano Za Garibaldi, has also drawn a line under the situation and issued similar strict guidelines. He told the Italian television station Telenord: 'This is not a punishment, but a gesture of respect for the town, its residents, and visitors.' Other cities across Italy have also implemented strict rules for tourists. Picnics on bridges or monuments are prohibited in Venice, bathing in fountains is forbidden in Rome, and noisy shoes are taboo on Capri. It comes after Albufeira, in southern Portugal, last month released a Code of Conduct banning everything from public nudity and sex acts to loud noise, and urinating in public. The harshest penalties - £426 and £1,500 - will apply to those caught fully naked or engaging in sexual acts in public. Partial nudity away from designated beach areas, public drinking, urinating or defecating in public, and creating excessive noise are also punishable by fines ranging from £255 to £1,277. Other violations listed in the code include spitting, misuse of public furniture, and abandoning shopping trolleys, as Albufeira City Council seeks to restore order and cleanliness in high-traffic tourist zones. The crackdown follows a series of incidents, including a viral video last year of eight British men dancing naked on a bar in broad daylight on Albufeira's main party strip, Rua da Oura. The UK Foreign Office issued a travel alert on Thursday, 26 June, warning British nationals of the new regulations, declaring: 'The municipality of Albufeira has introduced a code of conduct which bans inappropriate behaviour in public places. 'Check out the rules that are now in force. If you break the rules, you could be fined on the spot from between 150 and 1,800 euros.' Speaking in May, Mayor José Carlos Rolo said the code was part of a broader strategy to repair Albufeira's image, adding that the rules hope to 'promote harmony' between the tourism sector and local population. Meanwhile, Faro Airport in Portugal started the rollout of e-gate access to UK arrivals last month ahead of the peak summer season in the Algarve. The announcement comes after the Government said on May 19 that British passport holders will be able to use e-gates at more European airports as part of a UK-EU deal. Since Brexit, Britons arriving at EU airports have generally been forced to queue for manned desks to have their passports stamped, rather than use automated gates with facial recognition technology – leading to long waits, particularly in peak periods.

10 ways to fall in love with flying again

From private lounges to cockpit simulators and pocket-sized drones, these picks prove aviation can still feel fresh Aviation has always promised more than movement. It's about freedom, adventure, and, at times, a flash of luxury. While modern air travel often frustrates as much as it excites, there's still something singular about the act of being airborne. You just have to hack the process first. To foster a deeper connection with flight, here are ten brands, services and products that make aviation feel fresh again. Some ease the experience of commercial travel; others make private flying more attainable than expected. There's even the option of learning to pilot yourself – or of navigating from the ground, via drone. And if you need shelter from the skies, that's covered too. Strap in. Here are ten ways to rekindle the romance of aviation. In a world that feels increasingly unpredictable – whether due to geopolitical tensions, natural disasters, pandemics or other instabilities – the idea of a personal shelter feels more relevant than ever. Atlas Survival Shelters manufactures underground NBC (nuclear, biological and chemical) survival and bomb shelters, designed to offer protection and peace of mind. Built with high quality materials such as bullet-resistant hardened steel, fibreglass and corrugated pipe, each Atlas shelter is installed according to the client's needs and available space. The company also produces shelters for the aviation industry, meeting the requirements of aircraft owners who need emergency protection for a fleet. For households, a standard shelter brings practical advantages. Many are comfortable enough to be used as weekend hideaways, or adapted as storage, office or retreat space. Find out more about Atlas Survival Shelters at One of the hottest tickets for this year's Glastonbury wasn't for the VIP or backstage areas: it was for the helipad nearby. Yet the process can appear, at least on paper, out of reach. Global Jet aims to change that. With a 25-year track record, the company is a leader in the field. Still privately owned and run by its founders, Global Jet employs over 600 people across four areas: charter and brokerage, aircraft management, sales and acquisitions, and design and completion oversight. For the creative or nostalgic, few ways of engaging with history are more satisfying than the Corgi Aviation Archive range. Corgi – part of the Hornby Hobbies brand – recreates several of the world's most historically significant aircraft in weighty die-cast form, finished to a high standard and ready for display. A particular favourite is the AA29004 Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4. Nicknamed 'Moggy', this 1:48 scale replica includes detailed attending air crew and a display stand. Another standout is the Supermarine Spitfire MkI – the aircraft flown by war hero Douglas Bader – available as a 1:72 model with its distinctive black and silver underside. As digital life becomes ever more abstract, it's easy to see why so many people are returning to tactile objects like model aircraft to reconnect with the past. Worse still is how difficult and time-consuming the compensation process can be – so much so that many passengers never pursue the claims they're entitled to. Join the Claim is a UK-based consumer platform that connects eligible passengers with regulated law firms equipped to handle compensation claims. There's no upfront cost, and individual payouts can reach as much as £520. It doesn't take a mathematician to see how family claims can amount to several thousand pounds. To be eligible, the disrupted flight must have taken place within the past six years. If that applies to you, Join the Claim may offer a simple route to recovering compensation – without legal jargon or unnecessary delay. For many, it's not about the money so much as the principle. This platform helps ensure that principle isn't lost in the process. To start your compensation claim, visit Reconnecting air travel with a bygone era of luxury, grace and ease might seem like a pipe dream – but there are still ways for commercial flying to feel effortless.
