Lucid's CEO Issues Stern Warning
For years, electric vehicle startup companies like Tesla faced a tough uphill road on their journey toward making a mark on the U.S. auto market. However, they may face an even steeper climb thanks to new developments arising from Washington, D.C..
In a recent podcast appearance, Lucid Motors interim CEO Marc Winterhoff urged Beltway lawmakers not to mess with homegrown EV makers just as they're gaining traction. His comments come as Congress debates whether to eliminate or extend the federal EV tax credit, a key incentive that has helped some buyers choose electric vehicles over gas-powered cars.
During the June 25 episode of Automotive News' Daily Drive podcast, Winterhoff argued that smaller, startup firms like Lucid deserve more time to benefit from the $7,500 federal tax credit, which has historically helped established automakers sell electric vehicles (EVs) in the U.S. market. He argued that startups and other new companies shouldn't get penalized for not reaching sales milestones that established manufacturers already achieved, and that by granting them the same opportunities would encourage competition and innovation in the EV market, it would ultimately benefit consumers and the industry as a whole.
"It's widely known we haven't yet sold 200,000 EVs. But many others in the past have, and they all had that credit," he said on the podcast. "Why would you now change it and basically make it very difficult for new players in the market?"
Currently, lawmakers are divided on the future of EV incentives. The Senate's version of the budget bill proposes eliminating the tax credit within 180 days for all automakers, big or small. On the other hand, the House's version would offer support to smaller manufacturers by extending the credit through 2026 for those who have not yet reached the 200,000-vehicle sales cap. The House's extension could be a significant advantage for Lucid, which has sold only about 21,000 vehicles since the launch of its Air sedan in 2021.
Despite this, Winterhoff emphasized that Lucid isn't just an EV company-it's an American EV company with significant roots in America. Lucid builds both its Air and Gravity vehicles in Casa Grande, Arizona, and its corporate headquarters are located in Newark, California, which is proof that Lucid made a huge investment in U.S.-based production and supply chains.
"We made that decision already years ago to actually vertically integrate extensively here in the United States," Winterhoff noted. "I definitely am a proponent that [the EV credit] stays as much as it can and also for the cap of up to 200,000."
Stripping away that benefit now could slow Lucid's momentum just as it starts to gain footing. The company plans to dramatically increase its sales in 2025. While vehicles like its $69,900 Air sedan are well over the price cap for tax credits under current rules, Lucid buyers can still take advantage of the full $7,500 credit when they lease-a clause that has worked for the company.
Despite this, Winterhoff acknowledged that the EV industry can't rely on subsidies forever. "Eventually, EV makers will have to succeed without incentives," he said. "I mean that's totally clear."
However, despite EV sales picking up in many major hubs, the overall EV transition is still in its early stages, as adoption rates still lag in many corners and pockets of the country. Despite this, he believes that these are just growing pains, cutting incentives now would be premature and damaging. "I really think that this is a normal process in the adoption of new technologies," he says. "We've seen this in many, many other instances as well."
As Congress hashes out the final version of the bill, it's important to recognize that the stakes are high not just for Lucid but for the future of American EVs in general, especially if they plan to peg the U.S. as a player in ushering in the next era of transportation.
However, Winterhoff recognizes that affordability is currently the main concern when it comes to EV adoption. EV tax credits have addressed this issue in the past, before the current situation in Washington. However, potential buyers still find the upfront costs of electric vehicles to be much higher compared to traditional gasoline-powered cars. As a result, many consumers are hesitant to make the switch without significant financial incentives.

The Nashville Banner reported in May that Iris Dayana Monterroso-Lemus, a Guatemalan illegal immigrant in her thirties, gave birth to a stillborn baby boy mid-term "after pleading for medical help for days." According to the outlet, Monterroso-Lemus had a September due date but was arrested by ICE in Lenoir City, Tennessee, in April. After being arrested, Monterroso-Lemus was transferred several times to facilities in Illinois, Tennessee, Alabama and finally to the Richwood Correctional Center in Louisiana, according to the Banner. The outlet claims that the Richwood center has a "long history of documented abuse" and that Monterroso-Lemus' account of her treatment while there "echoed many of those issues." In the article, Monterroso-Lemus claims that she was malnourished while incarcerated and that rather than helping her when she voiced concerns about her pregnancy, she was mocked by the guards who gave only minimal medical intervention. A few days later, she began experiencing contractions, and days after that, she delivered a stillborn baby while at the Ochsner LSU Health – Monroe Medical Center. Monterroso-Lemus is now residing in Guatemala, according to the outlet. Commenting on the story, Jayapal said, "This is absolutely disgusting and we should all be outraged." However, Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, responded to Jayapal's post by saying her claims were "absolutely FALSE." According to McLaughlin, Monterroso-Lemus "had FULL medical, prenatal care." Kari Lake declares US Agency for Global Media ‘rotten to the core,' sets 2026 shutdown goal: 'A boondoggle'
Kari Lake isn't backing down. In blunt testimony before Congress Wednesday, Lake declared the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), the $950 million agency for which she is the senior advisor overseeing Voice of America (VOA), is "rotten to the core" and on track to be gutted by 2026. "This place is rotten. It's rotten to the core," Lake told the House Oversight Committee. "President Trump has asked me to go in and help clean it up, and he's also issued an executive order to reduce this agency down to its mandate, to what is mandated, statutorily required. That's exactly what I'm doing. I don't care if they attack me." She's not acting alone. Lake provided Fox News Digital with a letter from House Oversight Chair James Comer, R-Ky., and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., demanding records on USAGM's foreign hires, conflicts of interest and its handling of disinformation and national security. President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to say, "Why would a Republican want Democrat 'mouthpiece,' Voice of America (VOA), to continue? It's a TOTAL, LEFTWING DISASTER — No Republican should vote for its survival. KILL IT!" Lake didn't hold back in describing what she found within USAGM. "It's really like a rotten piece of fish," she said. "And you're looking at it, and you're saying, 'Is there anything we can pull out of here and eat?' And it's best to just scrap the whole thing and start over." She argued that instead of defending American values abroad, the federally funded national and international news agency had become compromised with hostile actors potentially influencing what gets broadcast on the U.S. taxpayer's dime. "The [Chinese Communist Party] has more control over what we put out editorially than people who are management at the agency," Lake said. "Are any of these VOA employees who acted on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party ... still employed? It's possible. We're working to try to figure that out." She accused the grantees — including VOA, Radio Free Asia and the Open Technology Fund — of resisting oversight and stonewalling basic financial reviews. "Nearly $400 million, the hard-earned taxpayer dollars of hard-working American people, are going to these grantees, and they've stonewalled us from getting any information until the eleventh hour," Lake said. "Finally, last night, knowing I would be sitting here, they finally agreed to say, 'Oh, we'll let you look at our books now.' It's a joke what's going on." Lake found no shortage of support from Republicans on the committee, including Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., who said the agency should've been shut down years ago. "We might as well be riding a Model T down the middle of the street. It might be ... it looks good, and it brings back old memories, but, dadgum, it's not very efficient," Burchett said. Lake agreed, adding, "It's a relic." Democrats accused Lake of dismantling a strategic asset and repeating anti-VOA rhetoric similar to that used by China. Rep. Madeleine Dean, D-Pa., said, "You just want to reduce it to its statutory minimum. And then you said … that it will be gone by 2026. You want it gone. The president wants it gone by 2026. ... You're a propaganda machine for the Trump administration." Dean said she had "no questions" for Lake, adding, "You have misled this committee. ... You've lost your credibility. You have poured it out in buckets." Rep. Julie Johnson, D-Texas, claimed layoffs would "cede all of our soft power in the world to our adversaries," arguing, "354 million people listen to [VOA] every week." Lake replied bluntly, "Those are government numbers. And I don't trust those numbers." Johnson shot back, "That's a sad state of affairs when you don't trust the government that you're representing." Lake defended the cuts, saying they follow the law and common sense. "We are doing what is statutorily required," she said. "The statutory minimum President Trump put forth in his executive order ... and that's what we're going to do." Rep. Young Kim, R-Calif., expressed concern that cutting grantee staff could weaken U.S. influence in hot spots like Iran and North Korea. "We can do it with a smaller staff.," Lake replied. "This newsroom should have been downsized a long time ago. … It's over. Too many people were working in the newsroom, and we've shrunk that down." She added that many grantee roles were redundant. "Why do we need RFA to be doing a Mandarin news service when we at VOA are doing Mandarin?" Lake said. Rep. Brian Mast, R-Fla., closed with a comparison. iHeartMedia runs a national operation at $90 million per year. USAGM's budget? Nearly $1 billion. Lake's closing message was direct. "We can do this smarter, leaner and with loyalty to American values," she said.

Ecuador's most wanted man and leader of the Los Choneros gang, Jose Adolfo Macias, was captured on Wednesday, according to the country's President Daniel Noboa. Macias, known as 'Fito,' escaped from a prison in Guayaquil in January 2024 while serving a 34-year sentence for homicide and narcotics trafficking. His escape unleashed a wave of violence in Ecuador, prompting Noboa to declare an internal armed conflict and designate Los Choneros and 21 other criminal groups operating in the country as terror organizations. In February 2024, the US Department of the Treasury sanctioned Los Choneros and Macias over their drug trafficking and violent activities in Ecuador and across the continent.
