North End crashed out of the Sports Direct Men's FAI Cup in Hollygrove on Sunday morning, losing comfortably to a fresh Castlebar Celtic.
Both the hosts and their Mayo visitors played last Sunday in their respective leagues, but North End had played two more games since whereas Celtic prepared for the biggest game of their season to date in comfort.

Sligo Rovers to take on First Division side Kerry in FAI Cup quarter-final

Owen Elding was the matchwinner on a night when goalkeeper Sam Sargeant saved a penalty, with the Bit O'Red deservedly sealing their spot in the next round. Rovers, who took on Dundalk away and Bohemians away in the competition so far, managed to avoid another Premier Division team in the quarter-finals. 2024 Sports Direct Men's FAI Cup winners Drogheda United host Shamrock Rovers in arguably the tie of the round while John Caulfield's Galway United meet Stephen Kenny's St. Patrick's Athletic at Richmond Park. Finn Harps will take on Cork City in the other quarter-final. Ties will be played on the week ending Sunday, September 14, with fixture details to be confirmed in the coming days. Two ties will be selected for broadcast on RTÉ2 television with the other two live on LOITV. Rovers will be keen to reach at least the semi-final stages of the competition, with 2020 the last time they got that far, losing out to Shamrock Rovers at Tallaght Stadium. In 2021, Rovers were knocked out in the first round by a Cork City side who at the time were sitting second bottom of the First Division. The following year, First Division side Wexford knocked the Bit O'Red out, also in the first round of the competition with Rovers in the middle of their European exploits. Fellow Premier Division side Drogheda United were too strong for Rovers in the first round in 2023, while in 2024 Rovers managed to get through a round, before being knocked out by First Division side UCD. Following two tricky ties already this year in the competition, Rovers will be relieved to have avoided some of the heavyweights left in the competition, but Kerry will be keen to cause an upset. And, given Rovers' recent record against First Division teams in the competition, no-one will be taking this tie for granted. It will be the first ever meeting of Sligo Rovers and Kerr y FC, who are based in Tralee and play their football in Mounthawk Park.
