Troopers recover body of Mekoryuk man after boat sank; 1 remains missing
May 29—Local searchers from Mekoryuk have recovered the body of one of two men missing after their boat sank off Nunivak Island, Alaska State Troopers said in an online update Thursday.
The three men were out seal hunting in an Ocean Pro boat about 22-24 feet long when it sank in rough conditions in the area of Ikathleewik Bay southeast of Mekoryuk on Monday night. Alaska State Troopers initially said the men were in a smaller boat, but revised the size estimate.
One man, a 19-year-old, was able to swim to shore, troopers said, but two other men weren't found.
Local searchers had been combing the area since Tuesday, with a National Guard helicopter and a U.S. Coast Guard HC-130 from Kodiak helping with the effort on Wednesday, troopers said.
On Wednesday, the local searchers found the remains of Albert Williams, 65, according to troopers.
Samuel Shavings, 72, has not been found.
"The search for Shavings was suspended after extensive search efforts were made by boat and air," troopers said.
The men had been out subsistence hunting for seals, Williams' daughter told Alaska's News Source.
Mekoryuk is a village of about 300 people on Nunivak Island in Western Alaska.

Biden says 'I'm feeling good' after cancer diagnosis
Former US President Joe Biden told reporters Friday he was feeling "optimistic" about the future after delivering his first public remarks since revealing he had an aggressive form of prostate cancer. "Well, the prognosis is good. You know, we're working on everything. It's moving along. So, I feel good," Biden, 82, said after an event in Delaware belatedly marking Monday's Memorial Day federal holiday. Biden's office announced earlier this month he is battling prostate cancer with a Gleason score of nine, which places him in the most severe category. The veteran Democrat told reporters he had decided on a treatment regime, adding that "the expectation is, we're going to be able to beat this." "It's not in any organ, my bones are strong, it hasn't penetrated. So I'm feeling good," he said. The mental and physical health of the former president, the oldest person ever to hold the office, was a dominant issue in the 2024 election. After a disastrous debate performance against Trump, Biden ended his campaign for a second term. When Biden's office announced his diagnosis, they said the cancer had spread to his bones. But Biden told reporters: "We're all optimistic about the diagnosis. As a matter of fact, one of the leading surgeons in the world is working with me." The political row over Biden's aborted candidacy has become a major scandal since the release of the book "Original Sin" -- which alleges that Biden's White House covered up his cognitive decline while he was in office. The ex-president was asked about the controversy and responded with sarcasm, joking that "I'm mentally incompetent and I can't walk." He said he had no regrets about initially running for a second term, and that his Democratic critics could have challenged him but chose not to "because I'd have beaten them." In earlier formal remarks in New Castle, Delaware, Biden spoke of his presidency as his greatest honor, and called for better treatment of veterans. But he saved his most poignant comments to mark the 10th anniversary on May 30 of his son, National Guard veteran Beau Biden, dying of brain cancer at the age of 46. "For the Bidens, this day is the 10th anniversary, the loss of my son Beau, who spent a year in Iraq," said Biden, who had attended a memorial service for his son earlier in the day. "And, to be honest, it's a hard day." ft/jgc

Missing 10-year-old girl's remains identified after Panga boat capsized off California coast
Authorities have confirmed the identity of a body that washed ashore in San Diego County last week as a 10-year-old girl who was reported missing after a Panga boat carrying migrants capsized off the coast. Mahi Brijeshkumar Patel was one of four passengers who died after their boat capsized on May 5, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office. She had turned 10 just two days before the accident. Her body washed ashore at Torrey Pines State Beach on May 21. Her 14-year-old brother, Prince Brijeshkumar Patel, also died in the incident. His death was ruled an accidental drowning. The siblings' parents were both rescued but the father remains in a coma, officials said. The family is from India. The family was aboard the Pangaboat, a small boat with an outboard motor, along with several other people when it capsized at Del Mar Beach. Read more: Dad in coma, son dead and 10-year-old daughter missing after migrant boat capsizes; 5 charged The U.S. Coast Guard received a call around 6:30 a.m. that a small panga-style boat with an estimated 16 people on board had overturned just north of Torrey Pines State Beach, said Hunter Schnabel, a Coast Guard public affairs officer. The third drowning victim was identified as Marcos Lozada-Juarez, 18. The fourth victim has not yet been identified. Authorities have not confirmed a final total of how many people were aboard the boat. Authorities began making arrests soon after the capsized boat was reported. Two people — Jesus Ivan Rodriguez-Leyva, 36, and Julio Cesar Zuniga-Luna, 30, both Mexican nationals — were arrested on the beach on suspicion of smuggling the passengers on the boat, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. A few hours later in Chula Vista, just 10 miles from the Mexican border, Border Patrol agents spotted a car, which had been seen earlier near the accident scene, and arrested three of its passengers, but the driver got away. Agents continued their investigation and eventually stopped two other vehicles involved in the smuggling incident and discovered eight of the nine missing migrants, according to prosecutors. The drivers of the vehicles — Melissa Jenelle Cota, 33; Gustavo Lara, 32; and Sergio Rojas-Fregoso, 31 — were arrested and charged with the transportation of undocumented immigrants, which is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
