
Humanoid robots gain momentum in commercial rollout in China
Powered by advanced devices such as 3D lidar, panoramic camera and large language model, Mornine can autonomously plan its walking routes and promptly respond to consumer inquiries.
In late April, the first batch of 220 such humanoid robots developed by Moga Technology Co., Ltd, a subsidiary of Chinese carmaker Chery, was officially delivered to clients worldwide.
Zhang Guibin, president of Moga Technology, said that the robots will first be deployed at automobile 4S stores, then in public service places such as supermarkets, before finally entering households.
Thanks to rapid advancements in technologies such as AI and large language models, China's robotics industry is undergoing a rapid transformation from laboratory research to mass production and applications.
The industry is expected to see a market boom in the coming years. According to the Chinese Institute of Electronics, China's humanoid robot market is projected to reach 870 billion yuan (about US$121 billion) by 2030.
The deep integration of AI, 5G communications, and brain-inspired computing is driving robotics into a new phase of embodied intelligence, said Liu Hong, director of the State Key Laboratory of Robotics and Systems.
Chinese robotics firm EngineAI launched two robot models on an e-commerce platform in mid-April, with its flagship model PM01 boasting 24 degrees of freedom, or the number of movable joints, and a movement speed of 2 metres per second.
This robot is capable of performing complex movements such as front flips and dancing, and can even assist police officers in street patrols.
"As a high-performance hardware platform, the PM01 supports integration with a variety of developer ecosystems, making it adaptable to diverse application scenarios," said Zhang Shan, office director of EngineAI Hefei branch. So far, the robot has already been deployed in education, security patrols and firefighting, and the target is to deliver 1,000 units this year.
These smart robots are also making inroads into industrial applications.
Five Kuavo humanoid robots, developed by Leju Robotics, have been introduced to the production lines of Chinese carmaker FAW Hongqi this year, where they transport boxes for long hours.
"Our Kuavo humanoid robots are primarily designed for logistics scenarios, such as transporting containers and sorting documents. The bipedal design offers advantages in moving in confined spaces or climbing stairs," said Wang Shuai, deputy general manager of Leju Robotics Hefei branch.
According to Wang, the robots are currently in the testing and development phase and they will officially start to work in factories by year-end.
Regions across China are investing heavily to foster this future industry. Hefei, capital of Anhui Province, has established a 10-billion-yuan fund to promote its smart robotics industry. Similar initiatives are underway in the provinces of Guangdong, Sichuan and Shanxi.
Intelligence is the main focus of Hefei's industrial development strategy for the next decade, with intelligent robots forming a key part of the blueprint, said Wang Haixia, deputy mayor of Hefei.
In 2024, the output value of Hefei's intelligent robotics industry exceeded 50 billion yuan, with the number of relevant enterprises increasing by 83 per cent year on year.
As a new tech hub, the city is now home to over 160 enterprises across the entire robotics value chain, from R&D to manufacturing.
Despite rapid progress, industry insiders widely believe that the mass application of robots still faces multiple challenges, such as an underdeveloped embodied brain and difficulty in expanding application scenarios.
The smart robotics industry requires collaborative efforts to establish shared technological platforms, complete the list of application scenarios and build a more robust industrial ecosystem, said Liu. - Xinhua

Singapore to sell Patek, Hermès and gold from launderers
SINGAPORE: Singapore is preparing to sell off a staggering haul of luxury items seized from convicted money launderers in the country's largest ever financial crime case, including Patek Philippe watches, Hermès handbags and gold bars. Deloitte's Singapore office has been tasked with overseeing the sale of the seized non-cash assets, CNA reported. Luxury handbags, watches and gold bars seized in the S$3 billion (RM9.9 billion) money laundering case were handed over to Deloitte by police for liquidation on Tuesday. The money laundering scandal, uncovered after sweeping police raids across Singapore in August 2023, traced back to millions of dollars funnelled from an illegal gambling syndicate operating in Southeast Asia. The offenders — nine men and one woman, all Chinese nationals with criminal records — have since been convicted, jailed, and deported. On Tuesday, the media were invited to witness the police handing over seized assets from the money laundering case to Deloitte at the Police Cantonment Complex. Over two days, officers from the Commercial Affairs Department (CAD) transferred 466 luxury items and 58 gold bars. The gold bars weigh between 999g and 1kg each. The haul included around 50 designer handbags from Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Dior and Chanel — among them a Hermès Birkin 25 Togo bag valued at S$30,000 and a Kelly Alligator model worth up to S$120,000. At least 14 luxury watches were also handed over, including timepieces by Patek Philippe, Richard Mille, Rolex and Audemars Piguet. A Patek Philippe World Time Chronograph was among them, estimated at S$120,000. A Richard Mille RM 67 was also seen — a watch valued at over S$400,000. Gold bars, jewellery cases containing earrings, bracelets and jade necklaces, a gold display plate, and a luxury belt were also on display. Police confirmed that Deloitte & Touche Financial Advisory Services has been appointed to manage and realise the non-cash assets. Remaining items will be handed over progressively. CNA observed Deloitte staff disassembling the handbags for cataloguing. Each part was photographed and packed into brown bags. Watches were inspected, logged, and stored in transparent bags, while the gold bars — valued at around S$139,000 each — were carefully bagged after inspection.

Trump criticises Goldman Sachs CEO over tariff impact research
U.S. President Donald Trump hit out at Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon on Tuesday, saying the bank had been wrong to predict tariffs would hurt the economy and questioning whether Solomon should lead the Wall Street institution. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said it was mostly foreign companies and governments absorbing the cost of his tariffs. 'But David Solomon and Goldman Sachs refuse to give credit where credit is due. They made a bad both the Market repercussion and the Tariffs themselves.' US deficit widens to US$291b in July as spending outpaces tariff windfall
WASHINGTON, Aug 13 — The US government's budget deficit grew nearly 20 per cent in July to US$291 billion (RM1.23 trillion) despite a nearly US$21 billion jump in customs duty collections from President Donald Trump's tariffs, with outlays growing faster than receipts, the Treasury Department said on Tuesday. The deficit for July was up 19 per cent, or US$47 billion, from July 2024. Receipts for the month grew 2 per cent, or US$8 billion, to US$338 billion, while outlays jumped 10 per cent, or US$56 billion, to US$630 billion, a record high for the month. The month of July this year had fewer business days than last year, so the Treasury Department said that adjusting for the difference would have increased receipts by about US$20 billion, resulting in a deficit of about US$271 billion. Net customs receipts in July grew to about US$27.7 billion from about US$7.1 billion in the year-earlier period due to higher tariff rates imposed by Trump, a Treasury official said. These collections were largely in line with the increase in June customs receipts after steady growth since April. Trump has touted the billions of dollars flowing into US coffers from his tariffs, but the duties are paid by companies importing the goods, with some costs often passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices. Consumer price index data on Tuesday showed increases in prices for some tariff-sensitive goods like furniture, footwear and auto parts, but they were offset by lower gasoline prices in the overall index. For the first 10 months of the fiscal year, customs duties totalled US$135.7 billion, up US$73 billion, or 116 per cent, from the year-earlier period. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Fox Business Network's 'Kudlow' programme that the growing US tariff revenue will make it difficult for the Supreme Court to rule against Trump's import taxes if a legal challenge to them makes its way to the country's top court. Ken Matheny, director of macroeconomics Yale University's Budget Lab, said it is unclear how much further monthly tariff revenue will grow, but the applied tariff rate measured by customs duties divided by the value of goods imports is still around 10 per cent, lower than the current average tariff rate of about 18 per cent based on the latest announcements. Significant numbers of firms are likely holding goods in bonded customs warehouses in the hope that negotiations will bring tariff rates down, but at some point those goods will enter the country, triggering duty payments, he said. 'I suspect these numbers are showing us there is a sizable balance of imports where the duties haven't been recognised yet,' Matheny said, adding that this could lead to a 'temporary big surge in duties.' The overall year-to-date budget results showed a US$1.629 trillion deficit, up 7 per cent, or US$112 billion, from the same period a year earlier. Receipts were up 6 per cent, or US$262 billion, to US$4.347 trillion, a record high for the 10-month period, while outlays grew 7 per cent, or US$374 billion, to US$5.975 trillion, also a 10-month record. The year-to-date customs duties were more than eaten up by an increase of 10 per cent or US$141 billion in costs for government healthcare programs, including Medicare for seniors and Medicaid for the poor, to US$1.557 trillion. The Social Security pension programme, the largest single expense item, saw an increase of 9 per cent or US$108 billion over the first 10 months of fiscal 2025 to US$1.368 trillion. Interest on the public debt also continued to grow, topping US$1.01 trillion for the 10-month period, an increase of 6 per cent or US$57 billion over the prior year due to slightly higher interest rates and increased debt levels. — Reuters
