Nik Nazmi: PKR needs strong leadership, realistic strategy for GE16
KOTA BARU: PKR vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has called for strong leadership and a realistic strategy to strengthen the party's election machinery and increase its parliamentary seats in the next general election.
Nik Nazmi, who is also Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister, said confidence in PKR's ability to grow can be realised if the right leadership team is paired with the party's key figures.
"We need the best individuals to reinforce our election efforts. God willing, if we get the formula right this time, we can move to the next level," he said.
He was speaking at the Jelajah Hidupkan Idealisme Reformasi Dalam Ujian Kuasa (HIRUK) programme for the Kelantan and Terengganu zone held at the National Department for Culture and Arts (JKKN) Complex in Tanjong Chat here last night.
While some have set ambitious targets of winning 80 to 90 parliamentary seats, Nik Nazmi said PKR must remain grounded, noting that the party currently holds just 30 seats. The party's best performance to date was 47 seats.
"We need to be realistic. From where we are now, what's our next target? What's achievable, and what strategy will take us there? I believe, with the right leadership combination, we can chart that path," he said.
He also stressed Kelantan's importance in helping to boost PKR's overall seat count, saying the state must not be left behind in PKR and Pakatan Harapan's efforts.
"If we want to go beyond 50 seats, Kelantan must contribute to PKR and Pakatan Harapan.

At the time of writing, that FB post alone has garnered a staggering 42K likes, 14K comments and 4.9K shares, majority of which praised the Pandan MP for his heroics by 'walking the talk' (when he expressed his desire to resign), hence living up to his principle as a leader with integrity. Judging from the moral support accorded to Rafizi – which presumably have come from the PKR and for that matter, Pakatan Harapan (PH) grassroots – one wonders if the underlying disgruntlement that have been openly expressed since it was announced that Nurul Izzah Anwar has won the deputy prescient race would boil over in light of the next national polls slated for 2027. If this happens, thinning faith in the newly-elected PKR leadership coupled with concerns over the fading Reformasi spirit within the party can probably spell disaster to the ruling PH coalition by virtue of PKR holding the steering wheel via its president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Former The Star environment section editor Andrew Sia joined the chorus of applause for Rafizi who is touted as a 'think tank MP' (by virtue of him having founded pollster Invoke Malaysia) with the gesture 'PMXI💪🏽👍🏼'. 'Thank you for keeping up the struggle for Reformasi … Hope you can return to clean up this country,' penned the now Malaysiakini columnist. 'A dignified move unlike certain politikus who continues to hinge onto their post as Senator despite having lost (an election).' Over on X, Rafizi's decision to step down was greeted with expression of anger towards the current leadership with one seemingly pro-opposition commenter respecting his decision 'cause you walk the talk' but teasingly remarked that she had searched in vain for Nurul Izzah's comment. Another self-proclaimed critic praised him for 'having the balls' while others described him 'as still having spine and integrity' which makes him a 'genuine reformist' as they reminded the PKR president and Rafizi's successor Nurul Izzah that divine intervention a.k.a. karma is on the way as they are bound to reap what they sow. Rafizi's resignation post had at the time of publication generated 968.7K views with 9.6K likes, 928 comments and 7.3K shares. 'THE second minister in Malaysian history to resign voluntarily. Past ministers never resign even when tainted with corruption and scandals of all sorts! He and Rafizi have a rare value which is lacking in today's materialistic world honour!' Such thought-provoking comment was penned by a netizen on a NST Online Facebook post of former PKR vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad leaving his office soon after his resignation yesterday (May 28) as the natural resources and environmental sustainability minister. The Setiawangsa MP's move marked the second resignation of the day after former PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli had earlier stepped down as economy minister on grounds that he no longer has the party's mandate to translate its agenda into government programmes. Stating that he was well-aware his party position was a key factor in his cabinet appointment, Nik Nazmi whose resignation will take effect on July 4 will start clearing his leave starting today (May 29) until July 3. A search by FocusM (stand to be corrected) of ministers who had resigned in recent times pointed to former health minister Datuk Seri Chua Soi Lek who gave up his ministerial portfolio on Jan 2, 2008 after having admitted that he was the individual featured in a sensational sex DVD that was widely being circulated in Johor at that time. Following his admission a day earlier, Chua who is now 78 also formally announced his resignation as the Labis MP and MCA vice-president. Years later, he attributed his downfall to his work dedication as health minister and MCA vice-president which eventually sparked suspicion among his political rivals. Another learned PKR supporter chastised PMX and eldest daughter Nurul Izzah Anwar for their power-hungry prowess at the expense of the nation's progress.
