Probe SOP compliance: Yusof
Published on: Thursday, August 14, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 14, 2025 By: Ahmad Apong Text Size: Yusof with the community in Sipitang calling for a thorough investigation into the tragic death of Zara Qairina. SIPITANG: The Education Ministry, Sabah Education Department and the school involved have been urged to conduct an internal investigation into compliance with work SOPs, discipline and safety procedures at both the school and its hostel following the tragic death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir. Qazanah Sabah Berhad Chairman and Sindumin Assemblyman Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob said the probe was vital to determine the level of SOP adherence and to safeguard the trust of parents in the education system. 'This is not a matter of minor negligence, but one that involves a life and the confidence of parents in our education system,' he said, stressing that the tragedy must prompt a thorough review of safety measures in schools and hostels. He also called on the police to carry out a full and professional investigation into the incident to establish whether any criminal element was involved. Dr Yusof, who was speaking during a gathering attended by thousands at the Esplanade in Sipitang recently, said the case had sparked public anger and speculation. Without making any accusations, including claims circulating on social media about the alleged involvement of a VVIP's child, he said the absence of any official statement or investigation outcome after two weeks had fuelled public concern. 'It is no surprise that NGOs and citizens have begun to speak out, and now the call for 'Justice for Zara' will not stop until there is an answer and appropriate action,' he said. The teenager's death has been widely discussed online since early August, with various allegations and speculation — including possible interference by influential parties — making the rounds. Dr Yusof stressed that justice in this case was not only for Zara's family but also crucial to restoring public trust in the country's security and education institutions. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said workers discovered Gingan Dalot at around 8pm. 'Serian Fire and Rescue Station received a call from the police at 8.20pm informing that the missing person from Kampung Semukoi A had been found by factory workers in Ladang Tabung Haji, Gedong, in a safe condition,' the department said in a statement. A Bomba Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) team was dispatched to the estate's guard post, where the workers had brought the victim. The search operation began after the victim's family lodged a police report yesterday, saying he had left home around noon the previous day wearing a black shirt, green long trousers, and green boots, on a Honda RS150 motorcycle. He was last seen at the Gedong junction. Family members and villagers had earlier searched locations he frequented without success. Bomba said the search yesterday focused on the Tabung Haji plantation area after workers reported seeing the victim passing through around 2pm. 'The Bomba team entered the plantation and followed the trail for about 10km from the main junction, where they found the victim's motorcycle,' Bomba said. Rescuers searched the surrounding area but found no trace of the victim. The search was suspended at 6pm due to nightfall, with plans to resume today. Following the discovery of the victim, the operation officially ended at 10pm. The search party included the police, Civil Defence Force, People's Volunteer Corps, and villagers.
