Two Worlds: Kate Bentley exhibition shows Edinburgh in a different light
An independent Edinburgh art gallery has announced details of a new exhibition featuring work by artist Kate Bentley RI RSW.
Two Worlds will be Bentley's first solo exhibition at Morningside Gallery and includes forty new paintings from the award-winning artist, who works from her studio by the sea in south-west Scotland. The exhibition promises to be a truly striking collection of paintings, exploring two main subjects: Edinburgh as a city, and the artist's love of gardens, whether her own, those of her imagination or the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh.
These two worlds inspire the name of the exhibition and reflect the way Kate engages with her subjects and her materials, with the interplay of the real and the imagined always present. Her location and the landscape hugely influence her subject matter and in many ways Kate is a 'painter of life', using traditional methods of en-plein air sessions and life drawing to create her work. Many of her garden paintings are both botanical studies and imaginative narrative works in equal measure, often with a kaleidoscopic element which fractures and distorts the flow, inviting a second look to fully take in the scene.
In her paintings of Edinburgh, the city is presented as a witness to the many stories told and lives lived, past and present. A city of beautiful gardens and breathtaking natural landmarks sitting alongside historical architecture. The mark-making in these paintings leads the eye to new places, new points of interest, taking the viewer on a journey which feels like an adventure; both expansive and immensely satisfying.
Eileadh Swan, director of Morningside Gallery said: 'We're absolutely delighted to be introducing our first solo exhibition of Kate Bentley's paintings, and to welcome her to the gallery on Friday 2 May, for a Private View ahead of the exhibition launch the following day. It's a truly dazzling collection of work which really highlights Kate's fearless experimentation and urge to tear up the rule book, giving her paintings a completely new dimension.'
Commenting on the exhibition, Kate Bentley RI RSW said: 'My son moved to Edinburgh a few years ago which gave me reason to visit more often. There is something comfortable and un-threatening about the town; the hills and proximity of the sea are familiar to me and the architecture, history and gardens are all subject areas that I find inspiring. There is a sense of the many lives that have lived here, and the various epochs that the city has endured and been shaped by.'
Based at Church Hill in Morningside, the gallery will have 40 new paintings in the exhibition, which can also be viewed online and toured as a virtual exhibition for anyone who is unable to make it to Edinburgh.
The exhibition will run in the gallery until Sunday 18 May, and is open to the public.

It's no wonder people have dressed to the nines for the occasion, as each year the royal family flocks to Ascot to witness the action. It was announced, however, that the Princess of Wales has pulled out of Royal Ascot as she continues her cancer recovery. It is understood the Princess of Wales 'is disappointed' not to go but 'has to find the right balance' on returning to full time duty. Kate, 43, was previously listed by Royal Ascot as arriving in the carriage procession with Prince William - who is still attending. She attended Trooping the Colour and Order of the Garter in recent days plus a visit to V&A East Storehouse last week. While Kate has skipped Ascot, her mum Carole Middleton is in attendance, with daughter-in-law Alizée Thevenet, who is married to Kate's brother James. Each morning the gates open at 10.30am each day, ready for the anticipated first race which kicks off at 2.30pm. There are then seven races throughout the day, the last of which commencing at 6.10pm. And, of course, 2pm on each day of racing is the royal procession. As well as the racing, there's also lots of other things for the lucky guests to enjoy. It's predicted that the fine dining curated by 350 chefs will serve up 220,000 hand-crafted afternoon tea cakes, 7,300 Angus steaks and 3,000 kilos of salmon over the five days. Prince William makes solo Royal Ascot outing after Kate pulls out last minute
Prince William has arrived at the Royal Ascot alone after Princess Kate pulled out of the event at the last minute. With one hour to spare before the second day of Royal Ascot began, it was revealed Kate would not be attending as she continues to find the right balance following her treatment for cancer. William arrived in the first royal carriage alongside King Charles, Queen Camilla and Prince Saud bin Khalid Al-Saud. The Prince of Wales had been down to travel in the second carriage alongside Kate, but was bumped up to his father's carriage when it emerged Kate would not be there. Despite his wife not being by his side, William is still attending the second day of the five-day meet in Berkshire, as he will award the winner of the Prince of Wales race with their trophy. In keeping with the strict formal dress code, William donned a traditional morning suit. Charles and Camilla were also dressed in their racing best, with Camilla opting for a rare pop of colour in monochromatic green outfit. Racegoers had been hoping to see Kate as Prince William is named as one of the figures awarding race prizes during the second day of the meet. Her name had also been included in the official programme as taking part in today's carriage procession in the second carriage alongside William. But just minutes after the carriage list had been released, Kensington Palace confirmed she would not be there. It is understood she is trying to find the right balance as she fully returns to public-facing engagements. A royal source reiterated that Kensington Palace has consistently stressed the need for 'flexibility' around the Princess of Wales' public engagements. The source added that the princess completed three engagements in the last week, attending the new V&A East Storeroom exhibition space in London, the King's official birthday celebrations at Trooping the Colour on Saturday and Garter Day on Monday in Windsor. The princess was said to be disappointed at not attending the famous social and sporting occasion in Berkshire with her husband and the King and Queen. This is the second year in a row Kate has not attended the annual social event as during last year's Royal Ascot, she was in the middle of her cancer treatment. While Kate announced in January that her cancer was now in remission and she is focussed on healing, today's statement confirmed that she is still trying to find the right balance between her royal duties and the effects of her health battle.
