SC cancels Rs 295 crore land payout order over bizman's fake claim

Noida: The Supreme Court has struck down a Rs 295-crore compensation award to Hyderabad-based businessman Reddy Veeranna, ruling that the payment was secured through fraudulent claims and a deliberate suppression of facts regarding land ownership in Noida.

A three-judge bench of Justices Surya Kant, Dipankar Datta, and Ujjal Bhuyan set aside both the Allahabad high court's 2021 order and its own 2022 ruling that had granted enhanced compensation to Veeranna for land acquired in Sector 18.
"The impugned order of the High Court dated October 28, 2021 passed in WP (Civil) 2272/2019 [Reddy Veeranna v State of Uttar Pradesh & ors] stands set aside, since fraud has vitiated the entire proceedings.
As a corollary to the above, the judgment and order dated May 5, 2022 in Reddy Veerana (supra) (which too was obtained by playing fraud) is declared to be a nullity and stands recalled in exercise of our inherent powers," the court said in its order.
The case revolves around over five bighas in Chhalera Banger village, jointly purchased in 1997 by Veeranna, Vishnu Vardhan, and T Sudhakar for Rs 1 crore. In 2005, Noida Authority partially acquired this land and later leased it to DLF for Rs 173 crore.
The Mall of India now stands there.
While the three co-owners initially contested the Authority's acquisition together, Veeranna subsequently began claiming exclusive ownership. He obtained a compromise decree from a trial court in 2006 — using a revoked power of attorney — which became the basis for recording his name as the sole owner in govt records.
In 2019, Veeranna approached the high court, seeking enhanced compensation without making his co-owners party to the case.

The high court awarded him compensation at Rs 1.1 lakh per sqm. The Supreme Court not just upheld the HC order, but also removed a 50% development charge that had been deducted, raising Veeranna's total entitlement to around 360 crore. The payout eventually settled at 295 crore following discussions with the Authority.
The apex court had, however, clarified then that it was not deciding on ownership.
Vardhan, who claimed he was not informed about these proceedings, approached the SC in 2023, filing multiple petitions to challenge Veeranna's claim.
He asserted that Veeranna had repeatedly misled the HC and SC, relying on an invalid decree procured through manipulation and concealment.
In its judgment, the apex court found that Veeranna had consistently identified himself as a joint owner with Vishnu and Sudhakar in earlier proceedings, but abruptly changed his stance in 2019. The bench held that he had suppressed critical facts, including Vishnu's pending civil suit challenging the 2006 decree.
"We have no hesitation to hold that Veeranna Reddy tailored a situation to suit his convenience by not impleading Vishnu as a party with the sole intention of obtaining an order in respect of not only the quantum of compensation payable for acquisition of the subject land but also a declaration as to his entitlement thereto — all, behind Vishnu's back. An attempt by Reddy to steal a march over Vishnu is clearly discernible which, without reference to anything more, does border on fraud," the court observed.
The case has now been remanded in the high court for a fresh hearing of ownership and compensation with all parties present, including Vishnu and Sudhakar. While Veeranna has retained the compensation amount, he has furnished property securities worth Rs 295 crore through his firm Manyata-Pristine. It will remain deposited with the SC.
Given the "magnitude of fraud", the SC has requested the high court chief justice to personally hear the case and conclude it preferably by the end of this year.

PM-KISAN payout helps farmers buy diesel for tractors in State

New Delhi: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the 20th installment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme, farmers in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu on Saturday expressed gratitude, saying the scheme has significantly helped them buy diesel for tractors, and pay wages to labourers. The PM-KISAN scheme has been a crucial support for farmers during difficult times. In Karnataka's Dharwad district, farmers said that the PM-KISAN initiative is making a positive impact on their agricultural activities. The funds help not only in purchasing seeds and fertilisers but also in managing household expenses, including school and college fees for their children. The scheme, launched by the PM Modi government, aims to provide income support to small and marginal farmers across the country. Under PM-KISAN, eligible farmers receive Rs 6,000 annually in three equal installments directly into their bank accounts. Speaking to IANS, farmers shared how the scheme has improved their lives. Nagappa Ganiger, a farmer from Dharwad, said, 'The PM-KISAN scheme has been a great help during tough times. It has enabled me to buy diesel for tractors and pay wages to labourers on time. So far, 20 installments have been credited to my account without fail. I am thankful to Prime Minister Modi.' Another farmer, Basavaraj Gunjal, added, 'With the aim of doubling farmers' income, Prime Minister Modi has introduced several farmer-friendly initiatives. The Rs 6,000 annual support through PM-KISAN has been a real benefit. On behalf of all farmers, I express my sincere thanks to him.'

Two arrested for abusing actor Ramya online; 11 more identified

Bengaluru: Two individuals were arrested by the Central Crime Branch based on a complaint filed by former Mandya MP and actor Ramya, Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh said on Saturday. Addressing reporters, Singh said 11 more individuals have been identified for their direct involvement in posting "abusive content online" and will be arrested soon. Ramya, aka Divya Spandana, met the Commissioner on July 28 to file a complaint against 43 social media accounts for sending her obscene messages, along with "rape and death threats". The online abuse began after she shared a news report on July 24 about the Renukaswamy murder case proceedings in the Supreme Court, in which she demanded justice for the victim's family. Kannada actor Darshan is a prime accused in the case. Following a verification process, the CCB, along with the social media monitoring team, identified 13 accounts that were actively involved in the abuse, Singh said. The two arrested individuals hail from neighbouring districts, he added.

Iconic Charbagh station wheeling towards a modern makeover

Come 2026, the railway's architectural gem will get two massive concourses, which will handle a rush of up to 10,000 passengers daily and offer a bouquet of facilities to travellers. The iconic Charbagh railway station building is a testament to Lucknow's cultural tapestry, weaving together Awadh's regal charm and British architectural finesse. Since its inception in 1926, this architectural gem—known for its unique design that muffles the clamour of trains—has been a bustling gateway for travellers. Now, it's poised for a major transformation, as the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) has laid out a Rs 420 crore redevelopment project to turn Charbagh into a world-class transit hub that blends heritage with cutting-edge functionality. A Vision for the future The project encompassing both the Northern Railway and North Eastern Railway zones will accommodate a staggering 1.40 lakh passengers daily while ensuring seamless connectivity, sustainability, and passenger comfort. The station's redevelopment is a delicate balancing act—preserving its historical essence while introducing modern amenities to meet the demands of a rapidly growing city. At the heart of the transformation are two massive concourses: a 120 metres x 115 metres structure for NR and a 75m x 30m concourse for NER, designed to handle peak-hour crowds of up to 10,000 passengers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is this legal? Techno Mag Learn More Undo These concourses will be interconnected by multiple foot overbridges (FOBs), including Metro-integrated FOBs, ensuring effortless movement across platforms and city sides. 'The idea is seamless movement,' said a rail official. The western FOB will link directly to the Lucknow Metro's Charbagh station, connecting both NER station and NR concourses, with escalators and lifts for accessibility. The eastern FOB will tie Station Road and Kanpur Road directly to platform No. 1 and further. Elevating the passenger experience A sprawling ground plus six-floor building spanning 45,270 square metres at the rear will house airconditioned waiting areas, food courts, dormitories, and commercial spaces. New blocks on the east and west will enhance accessibility and aesthetics, while dedicated drop-off/pick-up zones and widened roads will ease traffic congestion. Parking facilities for 900 two-wheelers and 900 four-wheelers will cater to the station's bustling traffic. Passenger amenities are at the core of the design. Retiring rooms, cloakrooms, medical facilities, CCTV surveillance, baggage scanners, and smart signage systems will elevate the travel experience. The NR zone, which currently has nine platforms, will get two more — all 11 platforms to be accessible via the elevated concourse. This concourse will double as a vibrant hub with waiting areas, shops, and other facilities for travellers. Sustainability and innovation Sustainability is woven into the project's core. Rainwater harvesting systems, stormwater management, and landscaped public spaces reflect a commitment to environmental stewardship. The use of pre-engineered buildings, modular construction, and building information modelling ensures precision and efficiency, minimizing waste and maximizing durability. Progress amid challenges The transformation is well underway, with over 84% of the rear station building structure complete. Platform panel casting is finished, and external development is progressing. An integrated running room with 326 beds and a new workshop store are ready for handover. However, the journey hasn't been without hurdles. The rear entry project, initially slated for completion by Dec 2025, has been delayed to May 2026 due to challenges like the Kumbh Mela rush, the relocation of railway assets, and land availability issues. A 56-day block is currently in place to develop the concourse over platforms 2 through the rear entry is complete, railway operations will shift to the southern side, freeing up the northern front for Rail Land Development Authority to begin work on the station's iconic facade. Existing railway offices, rest houses, and utility structures are being relocated to make way for these new developments. Honouring a legacy Charbagh's historical significance is not lost in this transformation. The redevelopment respects its 1926 design, celebrated for muffling train sounds legacy, blending timeless elements with modern aesthetics that reflect Lucknow's evolving identity as a vibrant metropolis. A new chapter by 2026 As the project races toward its anticipated completion in the last quarter of 2026, Charbagh railway station is poised to emerge as a beacon of progress, a transit hub that honours its storied past while embracing the future.
