MI holds the edge as PBKS looks to bounce back from the Qualifier 1 devastation

The Hindu2 days ago

In the few days that have passed since Punjab Kings eased past Mumbai Indians in an IPL league stage encounter, the two teams have taken wildly divergent paths.
PBKS has since slumped to a devastating eight-wicket defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Qualifier 1, while MI posted an inspired victory over Gujarat Titans in the Eliminator.
When PBKS and MI meet once again in the Qualifier 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium here on Sunday, it is the latter which holds the edge.
MI will be mighty pleased to see Rohit Sharma going great guns. The experienced star put MI on the right track with a vintage 81 against GT on Friday, albeit aided by a couple of catch reprieves.
Jonny Bairstow neatly filled the second opener spot left vacant by Ryan Rickelton. With a 22-ball 47, Bairstow hit the ground running.
PBKS will be wary of MI's batting depth. Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya and Naman Dhir pack explosive power, and if the PBKS bowlers have an off day, a huge score is on the cards.
On the bowling front, MI has the ultimate cheat code in Jasprit Bumrah. The pacer can turn a match on a dime, as he did on Friday with a peach to dismiss Washington Sundar.
PBKS needs to quickly make amends for a horror show against RCB. The batting unit inexplicably froze and was bundled out for 101.
Captain Shreyas Iyer will be keen to take the lead and show the way. PBKS does bat deep, even if the recent collapse raises concerns about the side's championship pedigree.
The likes of Prabhsimran Singh, Priyansh Arya, Nehal Wadhera and Shashank Singh need to clear the mind of all negativity and play their natural attacking game.
In the seven fixtures played here this season, only once has the team batting first failed to breach the 200-run mark. An entertaining run feast is on the cards.

Cricket, connections & courtship: How Rinku Singh met SP MP Priya Saroj

LUCKNOW: Cricketer Rinku Singh and Samajwadi Party MP Priya Saroj first crossed paths through one of Priya's friend's father, who is also a cricketer. The connection eventually blossomed into a relationship, supported by both families. According to Priya's father, Tufani Saroj, SP MLA from Kerakat in Jaunpur, the two had known each other for some time before formally announcing their intent to marry. The couple's engagement is scheduled for June 8 in Lucknow, followed by a wedding ceremony on November 18 at Hotel Taj in Varanasi (Kashi). Confirming the dates, Tufani Saroj said on Sunday that preparations are already underway to host grand celebrations. Prominent political leaders, especially from the Samajwadi Party, along with cricket stars, film personalities, and industrialists are expected to attend the events. In January, Tufani Saroj publicly announced the upcoming marriage between his daughter and the T20 cricket sensation after the two families held initial discussions to formalise the alliance. Like Rinku, who rose to fame by smashing five sixes in the final over during an IPL 2023 match against Gujarat Titans—completing the highest-ever last-over chase of 29 runs for Kolkata Knight Riders—Priya too had a spectacular rise. She became one of the youngest parliamentarians in the country by winning the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Machhlishahr (reserved), a constituency previously represented three times by her father before he shifted to contest from the Kerakat assembly seat in 2022. With Rinku focusing on the T20 series against England and the IPL, and Priya involved in her political campaign, both families agreed to decide the wedding dates only after the couple could sit together post-elections and tournaments. Now, with the dates set, the families are preparing to celebrate the union of two rising stars in cricket and politics.
