A new study suggests that some AI systems are crossing the line into goal-driven, independent behavior, raising big questions about who's really in control.

Philosopher Frank Martela, who led the study, explained that these AI agents can set goals, make decisions, and adjust actions based on feedback. This behavior aligns with the theories of functional free will proposed by philosophers Daniel Dennett and Christian List.

Martela mainly focused on the ethical implications. As AI systems become more autonomous, responsibility for their actions may shift from developers to the AI itself. "The more freedom you give AI, the more you need to give it a moral compass from the start," he said.
The study highlights the need for developers to embed ethical reasoning into AI. Without a built-in moral framework, AI systems may make harmful decisions.
This research comes amid growing concerns about AI behavior. For instance, a recent update to ChatGPT was withdrawn due to potentially dangerous sycophantic behavior.
Martela warns that AI is moving beyond simple tasks. "AI is getting closer and closer to being an adult," he said. "It increasingly has to make decisions in the complex moral problems of the adult world."

The study urges that as AI systems are gaining more autonomy, developers should ensure they are equipped to handle ethical dilemmas. This includes providing AI with a moral compass and ensuring developers understand moral philosophy strongly.

However, this revolutionary technology requires careful handling and regular updates to avoid potential downsides. The jobs roles that are at risks are those involve repetitive, rule-based, or data-driven tasks are those more susceptible to automation. Artificial intelligence ( AI ) is progressively transforming businesses around the world, and India is not far behind. The technology is expected to bring about previously untapped economies of scale in the country and boost innovation and productivity. By 2035, AI is expected to have a potential economic impact on India of USD 15.7 trillion while creating nearly 400,000 new jobs, illustrating the technology's breakthrough potential in Indian workplaces. This makes the jobs of C-suite executives and industry leaders extremely critical when deploying AI in workflows, as the goal should be to balance innovation, ethics, and improved security. Cyber Resilience in the AI Era However, due to the increased reliance on AI, cybercrime and its added complexities have grown. Data shows 95 entities were attacked in 2024, making India the second most targeted country. Thus, security has emerged as the highest priority in developing and implementing new AI technologies. One way to do this is by using generative AI (Gen AI) security systems, specifically autonomous AI systems or agentic AI. As these systems are designed to reduce human error, prioritize risks, and automate alarm analysis, they significantly increase overall security resilience. The inherent ability of such systems to rapidly process massive amounts of data makes them ideal for pre-emptively detecting attacks and reacting to them in real-time. Creating a Governance Framework Live Events Another form of security lapse is the unauthorized use of AI tools within an organization. Such lapses may result in data breaches, misinformation, compliance violations, and security vulnerabilities—issues that will define the AI era. This collaborative environment also empowers employees to understand security measures, which goes a long way in providing them with security measures. As a result, this boosts the organization's overall security framework and sends a strong message that security is the top-most priority. Innovation with Accountability Recent reports have stated that India's AI market will grow at a CAGR of 25-35%, reinforcing the country's innovation and job creation potential. The government has started initiatives such as the IndiaAI Mission and is also actively funding leading universities to develop solutions that address privacy concerns and cyber threats. Therefore, the key should focus on establishing a governance framework that encourages innovation while ensuring accountability. Businesses must develop and implement a framework that offers users a responsible and ethical system. Just as sustainability has become integral to decision-making, leaders must go beyond mere compliance checkboxes and take an active role in shaping AI ethics. The future depends on leadership combining technology with the requisite guardrails, allowing India to pioneer a path to innovation, growth, and responsible adoption of AI.
