Mount Etna eruption: Potential health risks locals are exposed to
Mount Etna is showing her natural might! As Europe's most active volcano erupted dramatically on June 2, sending massive plumes of ash and lava into the sky, Italy is currently facing significant turmoil among both locals and tourists due to the violent eruption. The eruption of Mount Etna released massive clouds of ash into the atmosphere and necessitated the evacuation of affected areas. The sudden volcanic activity has disrupted daily lives around the area, leading to emergency evacuations because of the hazardous conditions created by the thick ash fallout. What's happening? Mount Etna, Europe's most active volcano, erupted early on Monday, June 2, producing large plumes of smoke and prompting tourists to flee for their lives. Mount Etna has a distinct conical shape and reaches a height of nearly 3,400 meters due to centuries of continuous lava flows and explosive eruptions. The eruption began around 4 a.m. local time, with Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology reporting increasingly intense strombolian explosions. Etna, situated on Sicily's east coast near Catania and Taormina, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the world's most active stratovolcanoes, with annual eruptions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like A transformação de Fausto Silva aos 74 anos é inaceitável. Paperela Undo While the immediate threat to life was minimal, the eruption poses significant health risks to nearby residents. Some of them are: Respiratory hazards from volcanic ash: Volcanic ash is composed of fine particles that can penetrate deep into the lungs, leading to respiratory issues. Inhalation of ash can cause coughing, throat irritation, and exacerbate chronic respiratory conditions such as asthma and bronchitis. A retrospective study from the 2002 eruption of Mount Etna found a significant increase in emergency department visits for acute respiratory diseases during periods of intense ash fall. Cardiovascular strain Exposure to volcanic ash can also strain the cardiovascular system. Fine particulate matter can enter the bloodstream, leading to inflammation and increased risk of heart attacks and strokes, particularly in individuals with pre-existing heart conditions. The same 2002 study observed a rise in cardiovascular-related emergency visits during the eruption period. Ocular and dermatological effects Ash particles can irritate the eyes, leading to conditions like conjunctivitis and corneal abrasions. Direct contact with ash can also cause skin irritation, especially if the ash is acidic. Residents are advised to wear protective eyewear and clothing when venturing outdoors during ashfall. Long-term health concerns Long-term exposure to volcanic ash and gases has been linked to increased cancer risks. A study highlighted by Scientific American suggests that residents near Mount Etna may face an elevated risk of thyroid cancer due to contaminants like magnesium, boron, iron, and vanadium found in the local water supply, which are leached from volcanic rocks. Vulnerable populations Certain groups are more susceptible to the health effects of volcanic activity. Children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions such as respiratory or heart diseases are at higher risk. It's crucial for these populations to minimize exposure and seek medical advice if symptoms arise. Mitigation measures Local authorities have issued advisories urging residents to stay indoors during ashfall, keep windows and doors closed, and wear masks when going outside. Regular cleaning of ash from roofs and streets is essential to prevent accumulation and potential structural damage. While Mount Etna's recent eruption has not caused any immediate harm to residents, the associated health risks are quite significant. Ongoing monitoring and public health measures are extremely important to protect the local population from the adverse effects of the ongoing volcanic activity. Canada under siege: Wildfires force mass evacuations in Manitoba; indigenous communities at the forefront
More than 17,000 residents are expected to evacuate as wildfires rage across Manitoba , marking one of the largest displacements in the province's history. Pimicikamak Cree Nation suffers Among the hardest-hit are Indigenous communities like the Pimicikamak Cree Nation, where 767 people are still awaiting evacuation amid encroaching flames and heavy smoke. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Bo Derek's Probably The Most Gorgeous 68-Year-Old. Paperela Undo "It's very smoky here [and] it's getting thicker, because the fire's at our doorstep," said Chief David Monias of Pimicikamak Cree Nation. The community, located approximately 530 kilometers north of Winnipeg, has been grappling with deteriorating air quality and limited evacuation routes. Highway junctions leading to Norway House, the primary evacuation point, have been compromised by fire and smoke, causing significant delays. Live Events Also Read : Over 4,000 evacuated as wildfires threaten Northern Saskatchewan Efforts are underway Efforts to airlift residents have been hampered by adverse weather conditions, leading to unexpected flight cancellations. The Canadian Armed Forces have since arrived in Norway House with planes to facilitate the evacuation. "Please, we need your full co-operation to get on these flights when your name is called," urged Chief Monias. "These fires are unpredictable and dangerous." Situation in Sherrindon The situation is equally dire in Sherridon, a community of about 85 residents, now surrounded by fire. "Right now, we've had no loss [of structures], but it is surrounding us completely," said Deputy Mayor Sheryl Matheson. "I had it at the footstep of my [Kenanow] Lodge yesterday, and the wildfire crew was able to extinguish it." Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew declared a province-wide state of emergency on Wednesday(May 28), enabling the mobilization of additional resources and emergency measures. "This is the largest evacuation in many Manitobans' living memory," Kinew stated. The declaration allows for coordinated efforts between federal, provincial, and local authorities to combat the fires and support affected communities. Evacuees are being relocated to shelters in Winnipeg and other urban centers, with facilities like the Billy Mosienko Arena being repurposed to accommodate the influx. The Canadian Red Cross and other organizations are providing essential services, including food, water, and medical care. Manitoba is battling 22 active wildfires as of May 29, with 83 out of 158 fires nationwide considered out of control. The fires have already scorched approximately 491,000 acres, and smoke is expected to drift south into the US, affecting air quality in the Midwest.

After Blake Lively's lawsuit against Justin Baldoni, Kevin Costner is now sued for rape by a stunt performer
Kevin Costner, actor and director, is being sued by a stuntwoman named Devyn LaBella, age 34. LaBella worked as a lead stunt double for actress Ella Hunt on the film 'Horizon, An American Saga - Chapter 2.' She claims she was forced into an unscripted and unplanned rape scene during filming, directed by Costner. LaBella is accusing Costner of sexual discrimination and harassment. On the day of the scene, LaBella was only scheduled to perform a non-intimate stunt, as per reports. Suddenly, new scenes were added where actor Roger Ivens would be on top of Ella Hunt, violently pulling up her skirt. Ella Hunt got upset because the scene was violent, had no intimacy coordinator, and wasn't planned, so she walked off the set, according to the report by USA TODAY. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Remember Tiger's Ex-Wife? Try Not To Smile When You See Her Now Paperela Undo LaBella didn't know Hunt had left. Costner asked her to fill in without telling her what the new scene involved. LaBella says she was not warned that Ivens would mount her or pull her skirt. She only realized while it was happening. She says Costner told Ivens to repeatedly simulate a violent rape without giving her any notice, prep, or safety measures, according to reports. There was no intimacy coordinator present during this scene. The scene included Ivens pretending to unbutton his pants, pinning her down, and aggressively moving her skirt. Costner didn't tell them when the scene started or ended, which made LaBella stressed and confused. Live Events LaBella's undergarments were exposed and she was on her period, which made her feel extremely humiliated. She said between takes, Iven's hands were resting on her bundled-up skirt near her vagina. The actors' union SAG-AFTRA has rules, any nudity or sex scene must have the performer's written consent at least 48 hours in advance. LaBella says she got no notice, no contract rider, and no time to say no. The scene was shown on monitors for the whole crew, even though it was a sensitive scene and the set should have been closed, according to the report by USA TODAY. A day earlier, a different scripted rape scene was filmed with full prep and planning. That day, everything was safe and clear. But the second scene had none of those safety steps. After the incident, LaBella felt shocked, embarrassed, and humiliated. She started going to therapy after filming ended to deal with what happened. Kevin Costner's lawyer, Marty Singer, said the claims are not true and that what LaBella did doesn't match what she is now saying. Singer said LaBella is a "serial accuser" who has worked with the same lawyer on past cases. He added that Costner always makes sure sets are safe and wants everyone to be comfortable. Singer said the scene was explained to LaBella, and she even did a rehearsal with another actor. He claims she gave a "thumbs up" to her stunt coordinator to show she was fine doing the scene. That evening, she had dinner with the stunt team and seemed "in good spirits", with no complaints. Singer also shared a "cordial" text message from LaBella thanking the coordinator for 'these wonderful weeks', as stated by USA TODAY's report. FAQs Q1. Why is Kevin Costner being sued? A stuntwoman says he made her do an unscripted, violent scene without warning or consent. Q2. Who accused Kevin Costner? A stuntwoman named Devyn LaBella accused Kevin Costner.

Promoted after defeat: Why Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir was promoted to Field Marshal despite losing to India, and what it means
Pakistan promoted its Army Chief, General Asim Munir , to the rare rank of Field Marshal on Tuesday. This five-star rank is the highest military honour in Pakistan and has been awarded only once before. Munir's promotion has drawn attention because it came after military setbacks against India, including Operation Sindoor and air strikes on Pakistani bases, which questioned his leadership. Why Asim Munir got promotion despite military defeat? The promotion is seen as a strategic move to protect Munir from internal challenges within Pakistan's military. The rank of Field Marshal is traditionally awarded after a military victory, but this time it appears to serve a political purpose. Tilak Devasher, an expert on Pakistan, said, 'Field Marshal rank is usually conferred after a military victory. This may be the first time it has been awarded after a defeat—it seems intended to mask that defeat.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Bo Derek's Probably The Most Gorgeous 68-Year-Old. Paperela Undo By elevating Munir, Pakistan's civilian government and military establishment aim to strengthen his position and reduce the risk of any court martial or rival power moves against him. What does becoming a Field Marshal mean? The rank of Field Marshal is mostly symbolic and follows British military traditions, which Pakistan inherited. A Field Marshal remains on the active list for life but does not hold an official command role after retirement. The rank comes with special privileges such as wearing a unique uniform, using a special baton during salutes, and displaying five stars on official vehicles. Live Events MORE STORIES FOR YOU ✕ « Back to recommendation stories I don't want to see these stories because They are not relevant to me They disrupt the reading flow Others SUBMIT Munir will keep his current role as Army Chief despite the promotion, which is unusual since the previous Field Marshal in Pakistan's history did not remain in active military command after promotion. History of Field Marshals in Pakistan Before Munir, only one other Pakistani officer has held the rank of Field Marshal—General Ayub Khan. Ayub Khan became Field Marshal after taking power in a military coup in 1958. He then became the country's president and awarded himself the rank in 1959. Unlike Munir, Ayub Khan did not continue leading the army after his promotion and focused on running the country. Munir's case is different because he was promoted by the civilian government and will remain the serving Army Chief until his retirement in 2027. General Asim Munir's promotion to Field Marshal reflects Pakistan's efforts to solidify his leadership despite military setbacks. The move signals a political strategy to protect Munir and maintain stability within the country's military hierarchy.
