Govt promotes posthumous organ donation
Speaking at state-level inauguration of the commemoration of posthumous organ donors and honouring their families in the city on Wednesday, George said that govt successfully initiated liver transplant surgeries, conducting 10 liver transplants.
"Administrative approval was granted for Rs 643.88 crore to establish Kerala Institute of Organ Transplant in Kozhikode exclusively for transplant surgeries. For the first time in India, Ernakulam district hospital is preparing for heart transplant surgeries," she said.

IMS-BHU uses Made-in-Indiatech to improve patient care
Varanasi: After six months of successfully running an indigenously developed Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) integrated with a robust Hospital Information Management System (HIMS), one of India's largest level-one trauma centres at the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS), BHU is terming it a technological renaissance in public healthcare. This highly cost-effective innovation, which combines cutting-edge technology with grassroots accessibility, is currently exclusive to the IMS-BHU trauma centre. It is the first and only govt institute in India to provide e-X-Ray services free of charge, said the centre's 'professor in-charge' Prof Saurabh Singh. He compared the cost efficiency of the PACS being used by many other top govt institutions like RML Hospital New Delhi, AIIMS Jodhpur and KGMU Lucknow. While other institutes spent crores with recurring annual maintenance, IMS-BHU implemented the entire PACS HIMS ecosystem for Rs 2.5 crore with zero maintenance cost for 10 years, said Singh. He mentioned that the base cost of PACS HIMS being used at RML Hospital New Delhi and AIIMS Jodhpur is Rs 16.5 crores each and the comprehensive maintenance contract for 10 years is Rs 4.12 crores each. The trauma centre commissioned its Made in India PACS HIMS on Feb 6. Singh said, "This initiative has not only transformed clinical workflows but redefined what accessible, efficient and patient-empowered trauma care looks like in the digital age." The seamless digital ecosystem of this PACS HIMS has made bulky X-ray films and paper-based records a thing of the past. Now, every patient walking into the trauma centre is enveloped in an end-to-end digital health environment. Medical imaging is now captured, stored, analysed and transmitted entirely through PACS, ensuring zero data loss, instant accessibility and lightning-fast diagnostic turnaround. Surgeons, physicians, and radiologists access high-resolution X-rays, CTs, MRIs, and ultrasound scans in real time from their authorised devices, eliminating the need for physical reports and enabling faster clinical decisions. This results in reduced patient waiting time, lower operational costs, enhanced diagnostic precision and an unprecedented boost in institutional efficiency. This facility, comprising India's first free e-X-Ray over WhatsApp, is proving to be a game changer in this sector. In a country where digital access can mean the difference between life and death, IMS-BHU has pioneered a patient-friendly mobile PACS interface that delivers radiology reports directly to patients' WhatsApp inboxes at zero cost. Singh said in the past six months alone over two lakh patients, many from rural areas, have benefited from this service. Haryana private hospitals refuse treatment under Ayushman Bharat over pending dues
A week after private hospitals across Haryana suspended treatment under the Ayushmaan Bharat scheme over pending government payments, there is still no resolution, leaving around 1.5 crore beneficiaries without access to Indian Medical Association (IMA) Haryana called a halt to treatments, claiming the state government owes hospitals Rs 490 crore. Around 650 private hospitals in the state stopped accepting patients under the scheme, forcing many to delay or forego Kuldeep Mangla, who runs a private hospital in Panchkula and is part of the IMA's local chapter, said patient flow has almost stopped. "Certainly patients are getting affected and now hardly any patients turn up as they know that treatment under the scheme has been stopped. We feel their plight, but it is the government which is at fault and has not made the payments till now," he told India Today. He rejected Haryana Health Minister Aarti Rao's remarks that hospitals should not suspend treatment so early after joining the scheme."It is very difficult for hospitals to operate like this. We can't wait for ages for the payments. The government needs to understand this. Our issue is long pending, and we never planned that we would stop treatment in the initial months," Mangla Rao had earlier expressed disappointment over the hospitals' move. "It is very sad that the hospitals have stopped treatment. When these hospitals come to us and ask for empanelment, they should understand that they cannot stop treatment like this and that too in the initial months only. But we are in talks with the IMA," she aware of the suspension, are now largely avoiding private hospitals that were previously empanelled under Ayushmaan Bharat. Many are reportedly turning to government facilities, putting additional strain on Minister Nayab Saini said last week that a committee had been set up to verify the hospitals' bills, but so far, no payments have been released. The IMA maintains that the verification process cannot justify such long delays, especially when patient care is at neither side showing signs of backing down, the standoff remains unresolved. After spate of deaths in Hassan, govt to screen auto and cab drivers for heart disease
Bengaluru: In the wake of a spate of sudden deaths in Hassan district, the govt plans to screen auto and cab drivers for heart ailments and also train students, teachers, and gym trainers in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Health minister Dinesh Gundu Rao told the legislative assembly Thursday that the measures were in line with recommendations from a state-appointed panel led by Dr KS Ravindranath, director of Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences. Between May and June this year, 36 people — most under 45 — died mostly of heart attacks in Hassan district, triggering public alarm and speculation over a possible link to Covid-19 vaccines. About 30% of the victims were auto and cab drivers. " He said the govt is also considering upgrading Hassan district hospital and setting up a cath lab at an estimated cost of Rs 9.4 crore. "The awareness campaign to prevent heart ailments will not be limited to Hassan. We plan to cover the entire state. Since it is related to lifestyle, we should treat it as a social scourge and respond accordingly to eradicate it," Rao said. Opposition leader R Ashoka had flagged the lack of cardiac treatment facilities in Hassan, forcing patients to travel four hours to Bengaluru or three hours to Mysuru. Rao said the govt will work to improve facilities in all districts, including ensuring ECG and emergency cardiac machines in all PHCs and CHCs. The report into sudden deaths in Hassan examined 24 cases from May and June 2025. Of these, 10 were confirmed as cardiac deaths, 10 were probable, and four were due to non-cardiac causes. The report found no unusual spike and no link to Covid-19 vaccines, with obesity, alcohol use, diabetes, and hypertension emerging as common risk factors.
