Ricky Ponting pulls no punches at Jasprit Bumrah and Siraj after England pile on 669: ‘You look at his pace…'

Under-cooked, indisciplined, wayward... You generally never associate these with Jasprit Bumrah. He has not risen to an all-time greatness status for nothing. But he is human after all. The fourth Test in Manchester came as the biggest proof of that and unfortunately for India, it came when they were 1-2 down. They desperately needed their best bowler to fire on all cylinders to draw level in the series. As fate would have it, the exact opposite happened. Ricky Ponting minced no words in criticising Jasprit Bumrah
For the first time in his glittering Test career, Bumrah conceded more than 100 runs in an innings for only two wickets. That was not even the worst part. It was the ineffective way he bowled right through England's innings. His pace was down. The lines were inconsistent; there was no real thrust going into the ball. Bumrah appeared tired and spent.
India's second-best fast bowler Mohammed Siraj, who, unlike Bumrah, featured in all four Tests of this series so far, was no better. Known for giving more than 100 per cent every time he runs in to bowl, Siraj ran out of fuel after the first session of Day 3 as England batters kept on piling the runs.
Legendary Australia captain Ricky Ponting minced no words in cracking the whip at Bumrah and Siraj. "That's why the game's called Test Cricket. Yeah, it is a test. It's a physical test, it's a mental test and a challenge. There was always concerns about Bumrah and Siraj really getting through this Test Series with as many games under their belt as possible. You know, this is, I think, the fourth game now for Siraj. So, yeah, they're starting to take its toll. There's no doubt about that," Ponting said on SKY Sports.
Siraj bowled 30 overs for just one wicket and conceded 140 runs. Bumrah, on the other hand, picked up a couple of wickets for 1112 runs.
Ponting said Bumrah looked flat, his pace was down, and once England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett put the Indian under pressure, there was no counterpunch.
"Bumrah did look a bit flat right from the start of this game, to be honest. You look at his pace. His pace has been sort of 82, 83 miles an hour on average right the way through this game, which is probably three or four or five miles down on what he normally is. But you've got to give credit to the England batters as well. I thought Duckett and Crawley at the top really put this Indian bowling attack under a lot of pressure from the start," Ponting said.
The Indian team management announced before the start of the series that Bumrah was fit to play only three out of the five Tests, which means it is all but confirmed that the World's No.1-ranked bowler's England tour has ended. He is unlikely to be a part of India's XI going into the final Test at The Oval.
Ben Stokes delivered a match-defining all-round performance as England posted a record 669 to take a commanding 311-run lead over India in the fourth Test at Old Trafford. Stokes scored a stroke-filled 141 off 198 balls, completing a rare double of a century and a five-wicket haul in the same match. He also became only the third cricketer with 7,000 runs and 200 wickets after Jacques Kallis and Sir Gary Sobers. India's second innings began disastrously, losing Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan in successive balls in the first over. It marked the first time since 2014 that India conceded 600+ runs.

Divya Deshmukh clinches Women's Chess World Cup gold: How much prize money will she receive?

. Indian chess prodigy Divya Deshmukh became the youngest to win the FIDE Women's World Cup on Monday at just the age of 19, outshining the seasoned Koneru Humpy in the tie-breaker of an all-Indian final. With her win, a feat that left the teenager emotional, Deshmukh not only earned the prestigious title but also became a Grandmaster. The victory for the Nagpur player came after the two classical games played on Saturday and Sunday ended in draws. After the drawn games, it was the first set of tiebreakers that proved decisive as Humpy lost her ground. Divya Deshmukh became the 88th Grandmaster of the country, as she emerged victorious over Humpy at the FIDE Women's World Cup. She his now the fourth Indian woman player to achieve the GM feat after Humpy, Dronavalli Harika and R Vaishali. 'I need time to process it (win). I think it was fate, me getting the Grandmaster title this way because before this (tournament) I didn't even have one (GM) norm, and now I am the Grandmaster,' she said. Divya Deshmukh secured a gold, Humpy Koneru pocketed silver, while China's sensation Tan Zhongy finished the tournament with a bronze medal. According to the FIDE website, the total prize fund accumulated for this year's Women's World Cup was $691,250. Out of this, the winner will be given $50,000. This means Divya Deshmukh received a prize money of $50,000, or roughly ₹ 43.5 lakh for winning the prestigious championship. The FIDE World Cup also awards three spots to the FIDE Women's Candidates Tournament to be held in the first half of 2026. However, the prize money is significantly lower than that of the FIDE World Cup (Open section, which includes both men and women), where the winner gets $110,000. During the tense contest, a string of inaccuracies in the second rapid game contributed to Koneru's downfall. She found herself a pawn down in the rook endgame, which played out in Divya's favour. The veteran allowed the situation to sink in and resigned on the 75th move and fell short in a gripping final with a score of 2.5-1.5.

India to take 'wildcard' approach, Kuldeep in ‘serious consideration' for Oval Test; Bumrah discussion underway: Report

After a valiant fightback in Manchester, India have managed to keep the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series alive, thus setting up a perfect finale at the Oval, where the fifth Test match will get underway on Thursday. India are expected to make a few changes, with discussions reportedly underway over Jasprit Bumrah's availability. India's Kuldeep Yadav during a practice session ahead of the fourth test cricket match between India and England, at the Old Trafford Cricket(PTI) According to a report in the Times of India, "It is understood that a 'wildcard' approach could be followed as far as Bumrah is concerned, and the team management is likely to shore up wicket-taking options for the fixture." The report further hinted that Kuldeep Yadav, who has yet to make an appearance on the tour, and has been the experts' favourite since India landed in Leeds last month, could finally get a game in London. In fact, RevSportz too reported on similar lines, saying that the leg-spinner "is in serious consideration to play the fifth Test at The Oval." In fact, the venue in London has traditionally favoured spinners, and as the game progresses, the extra bounce off the track is expected. Spinners have averaged 27.72 at The Oval in the last 10 years, across 10 matches, the best at any venue in England (min. 5 Tests), picking 80 wickets. Will Bumrah play at The Oval? The 31-year-old was said to play just three matches on the tour of England, in order to manage his workload, and he has played his part. But with India having the chance to end the series on a 2-2 draw, which could quite be a salvation for Gautam Gambhir, who was criticised after the team suffered a whitewash at home against New Zealand last year, followed by a defeat in the tour of Australia, Bumrah could be considered as for a fourth appearance on the tour. This would largely depend on his fitness, with Bumrah having shown signs of discomfort during the Manchester Test. But courtesy of India's batting defiance, he had the chance to rest for an extra innings. Moreover, Gambhir confirmed on Sunday that all the fast bowlers are fit and available for the fifth Test, hinting not just at Bumrah's availability, but also at the return of Akash Deep, who was rested after picking up a groin injury at Lord's. This implies that Anshul Kamboj, who had an underwhelming debut in Manchester, will be rested for the Oval Test. Mohammed Siraj, Akash, and Bumrah will form the pace line-up. What India will now need to consider is whether to retain Shardul Thakur for his all-rounder duty or boost up their bowling attack with the addition of a proven wicket-taker, Kuldeep.
