Houston's defense carries Cougars into 7th Final Four with 69-50 March Madness win over Tennessee

Washington Post31-03-2025

INDIANAPOLIS — Houston's relentless, harassing defense had Tennessee's shooters dancing around.
Now, the Cougars are two-stepping it back to Texas.
L.J. Cryer finished with 17 points, Emanuel Sharp scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half and the nation's stingiest defense delivered a historic NCAA Tournament performance, leading top-seeded Houston past second-seeded Tennessee 69-50 on Sunday for the Midwest Region title and its seventh trip to the Final Four.

Ohio State basketball reportedly set to announce home-and-home series with in-state rival

Ohio State basketball reportedly set to announce home-and-home series with in-state rival For years, the Ohio State basketball program has kept its in-state brethren within arm's length of playing during the regular season. Reasons aren't fully known, but many believe it's because the Buckeyes have nothing to gain by playing the likes of Cincinnati, Dayton, or Xavier -- three other programs in the state that could take away the mantle of being the so-called best hoops program in the Buckeye state. We've seen OSU play that trio before, but more often than not, it's been because it was forced to through special events or postseason tournament play. It seemed like a far-fetched idea that Ohio State would enter into any kind of agreement to play on another in-state basketball school as a part of a nonconference, regular-season game willingly. Until now. Though further details are still to materialize, NCAA basketball insider Jon Rothsten has announced that Ohio State and Dayton have agreed to a home-and-home series beginning this year, with the first game being at UD Arena in Dayton. There has not been an announcement by the Ohio State or Dayton athletic programs as of yet, but Rothsten is usually on point with these sorts of things, so expect something to be made official from the universities soon with a real, live date and time. Crazy enough, the Flyers and Buckeyes have only met twice, with the last meeting being a classic in the second round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament. That contest was won by the Flyers on a layup with under four seconds remaining to end OSU's postseason run. The win also evened up the all-time series at one victory each. OSU won the only other matchup 74-63 in an NIT quarterfinal in 2008. I'm all about this sort of scheduling and think it is long overdue. In fact, while we are on it, why don't we start a little Buckeye state annual event with all four of these programs doing battle? How fun could that be? We'll have more details as they are made available.

Report: Mavericks schedule visit with Cooper Flagg ahead of 2025 NBA draft

Report: Mavericks schedule visit with Cooper Flagg ahead of 2025 NBA draft The Mavericks have Cooper Flagg scheduled for a pre-draft visit to Dallas, @TheSteinLine has learned. Flagg, Knicks, Suns and more from the NBA grapevine ... all here in my latest around-the-league notes: — Marc Stein (@TheSteinLine) June 7, 2025 Projected No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg is reportedly scheduled to meet with the Dallas Mavericks ahead of the 2025 NBA draft, according to Marc Stein of The Stein Line on Substack. Flagg led Duke to the Final Four, averaging 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocks on 38.5% shooting from 3-point range. He became the 22nd player in program history to be named a consensus first-team All-American. The Player of the Year is set to visit the Mavericks later this month to get to know team personnel before the organization selects him with the first pick on June 25. Jason Kidd said last month that he believes the Mavericks are a great situation for Flagg, with their mixture of established veterans and up-and-coming players. He believes Flagg will be able to step in and make an immediate contribution. The 6-foot-8 forward has drawn comparisons to former Duke legend and Hall of Famer Grant Hill because of his size, athleticism and ability to affect games in various ways. Former coach Mike Krzyzewski even called him the best freshman to ever play with the Blue Devils. The Mavericks have the first pick in the draft for only the second time in franchise history. After previously trading franchise cornerstone Luka Dončić, the Mavericks will soon meet with their next once-in-a-generation player in Flagg.
