Barn Burner Campaign sets out to protect individuals from roofies

DEADWOOD, S.D. (KELO) — A new strategy to stop drink spiking and sexual assaults kicks off in Deadwood this week.
The Barn Burner Campaign aims to empower those out for a night of fun to help those who might not know they need it.
Cocaine ring busted in Rapid City
This idea started after writer and producer Sean Covel, who's known for films like Napoleon Dynamite, learned what his friends are dealing with in larger cities.
'When I think about drink spiking, I think about some bad guy going in and targeting a woman and spiking her drink. But what I'm actually learning is it's more like a group environment where a guy is going to hit multiple drinks and then sits back to see who will cut off from the group,' Writer/Producer Sean Covel said.
While there haven't been problems in Deadwood, the western South Dakota city sees 3.5 million visitors each year.
'And then just our local residents, so for them to have this safety blanket around them, just to feel safe when they're going out and having a cocktail or dinner is very important,' Saloon No.10 Manager Charlie Struble-Mook said.
Charlie Struble-Mook, at the Saloon No.10, went door to door with Covel to get other Deadwood businesses involved.
'Over the course of an hour, most of the bars on main street were already on board. It wasn't even a conversation, yeah it looks great, sounds like safety, we'll help you out,' Covel said.
These posters are spreading the word to customers.
If you notice something suspicious, just say 'Barn Burner' to any bartender or bouncer and they'll take action.
'Most guys are good guys who want to protect and this is an opportunity or a tool to allow them to be that good guy that wants to protect and look out for others,' Struble-Mook said.
'So by starting it here and starting it small, we'll start to hear the stories and we'll start to create momentum and when you have that momentum, then you can scale it out hopefully nationally,' Covel said.
Sean Covel is hoping the Barn Burner Campaign can catch on in other cities. If you are interested in getting your business in the program, you can contact Charlie at the Saloon No.10 in Deadwood.

Family prepares for end of life for woman severely injured in 2022 Portage Park triple murder

CHICAGO (WGN) — The family of a woman severely injured in a shooting more than two and a half years ago is preparing for the end of her life. In 2022, Mariah Vera was celebrating her 25th birthday at the Vera Lounge—her family's bar in the Northwest Side neighborhood of Portage Park. At about 2:30 in the morning, a man opened fire following a fight at the bar. Vera's father, Ricky, and two others—26-year-old Mario Pozuelos and 24-year-old Mercedes Tavares—were killed by the gunman. Mariah Vera was trying to save her father's life when the gunman walked up and shot her point-blank in the head, shattering part of her skull. Her family said they remained hopeful for her to recover, but doctors told them her condition has deteriorated in the other direction. A GoFundMe page has been established to help her family cover medical expenses. Samuel Parsons-Salas, a 32-year-old man, faces three counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder, one count of aggravated battery and one count of kidnapping in connection with the gruesome shooting. MORE INFO: No bail for man charged in Portage Park triple murder Court records show Parsons-Salas was released from prison last September, four years after he reached a plea deal with prosecutors in a 2009 double murder in the Albany Park neighborhood. ‘I'm being stonewalled.' Community leaders want release of undocumented immigrant

On Friday morning, a news conference was held about the release of Muscatine resident Jesus Hernandez, whose full name is Felipe de Jesus Hernandez Marcelo. He came to the United States from Mexico in 2021, and has relatives in the Muscatine area. Hernandez's attorney says he is not facing removal, which is the legal term for the expulsion of a non-citizen from the United States. His lawyer, Emily Rebelskey, was at the news conference, along with family, and friends. Hernandez, an immigrant without legal status, was shot in his car while thieves tried to steal it early June 21 while he was driving to his construction was taken to a hospital for his injuries. His attorney says he was shot through his right wrist, his right thigh, and he also was wounded in the calf of one leg. She said he developed an infection while he was incarcerated in Muscatine County Jail, and was treated for it at a hospital. When Hernandez went to pick up his car, he was detained, his lawyer said. Rebelskey says Muscatine County Attorney Jim Barry is refusing to compromise for Hernandez's release. 'I'm being stonewalled by Jim Barry,' said Rebelskey. 'I have asked Jim Barry three times to sign a U-visa certification, and his position is that he does not negotiate on immigration status,. My question for Jim is 'Why not?'' A U-visa is a non-immigrant visa designed for victims of certain kinds of crimes who have suffered physically or mentally, and are willing to assist law enforcement in the investigation or prosecution of a crime. A U-visa allows eligible people to temporarily live and work in the United States, and possibly pursue legal permanent residence. Hernandez was denied a U-visa, and Rebelskey says city officials are refusing to talk to her. Our Quad Cities News tried to reach Barry on Friday but his staff said he was in court. Hernandez is in custody in the Muscatine County Jail. This is a developing story. Our Quad Cities news will provide details about the case and upcoming court hearings as they become available.
