Prost is sanctioned for authorising the ICC investigation into U.S. personnel in Afghanistan. The United States cited their roles in actions it described as 'illegitimate and baseless' against Israel and American officials. The ICC has faced fierce criticism from Washington, particularly after issuing arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. The court is also investigating potential abuses by U.S. forces in Afghanistan, though it prioritises Taliban and ISIS-related atrocities. Following the U.S. announcement, the ICC condemned the sanctions. The court called the measures 'a flagrant attack against the independence of an impartial judicial institution' and reiterated its commitment to pursue accountability for victims of war crimes worldwide. Netanyahu praised the U.S. move as 'a decisive act against a smear campaign of lies against the State of Israel'. Two of the sanctioned officials, Prost and Guillou, come from Canada and France, countries that recently recognised a Palestinian state in response to Israeli actions in Gaza and the West Bank. The French Foreign Ministry said the judges' work is 'essential in the fight against impunity', highlighting the international stakes involved. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric warned that the sanctions 'impose severe impediments on the functioning of the office of the prosecutor', undermining the foundations of international justice. The United States has long opposed the ICC and has resisted the idea that American officials could face prosecution for war crimes. Previous administrations had avoided extreme measures like sanctions. This new round represents the Trump administration's most assertive step. Critics say the action could weaken international law to shield Israel and American personnel from accountability.

Fadnavis inaugurates AI institute
Pune: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated Symbiosis Artificial Intelligence Institute (SAII) in the city on Wednesday. Devandra Fadnavis (PTI) 'AI can predict human emotions, but it cannot feel them. Only humans are capable of truly experiencing emotions,' he said during the event. Symbiosis founder president SB Mujumdar, pro-chancellor Vidya Yeravdekar, vice-chancellor Ramakrishnan Raman, and director Loveleen Gaur were present during the event. 'We embraced the computer revolution and excelled in the digital world. Now, AI, quantum computing, and semiconductors will shape every stage of our lives,' said Fadnavis. The state, he added, is introducing AI literacy programmes, AI-powered agricultural tools for crop protection, and smart traffic management systems in partnership with Google. Chatbots have already been deployed across government departments to provide citizens with instant responses. 'Every new technology has two sides. Instead of fearing it, we must learn to master it,' said Fadnavis. At the event, Fadnavis also launched an AI-powered multilingual virtual assistant developed by Symbiosis alumni. It currently supports Hindi, English, Marathi, Arabic, and French.

UK military chief meets US counterparts for Ukraine talks
Admiral Sir Tony Radakin met senior US defence officials alongside other European military chiefs in Washington DC on Wednesday to discuss military options to secure peace in Ukraine. He later attended a virtual meeting of Nato's military committee, described by its chairman Italian Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone as 'candid'. On Tuesday evening, Admiral Radakin, the chief of the defence staff, had dined with his US counterpart General Dan Caine. The meetings come amid renewed planning for a 'coalition of the willing', led by the UK and France, that would guarantee Kyiv's security in the event of a ceasefire. Earlier in the week, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron co-chaired a meeting of the coalition, in which members of the group also discussed the possibility of further sanctions on Russia. Western security guarantees, strongly resisted by Moscow, are one of the central issues for any peace deal for Ukraine, which fears Russia could otherwise use a ceasefire to regroup and launch a renewed invasion. So far, only the UK and France have indicated they could commit troops to a peacekeeping force in Ukraine. In an interview on Tuesday Donald Trump ruled out an American ground contribution but suggested the US could be willing to provide some form of air support. His special envoy, Steve Witkoff, had earlier suggested the US could offer Ukraine a mutual defence agreement similar to Nato's Article 5, without Kyiv formally joining the alliance. Renewed talks among the 'coalition of the willing' follow last week's summit between Mr Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska as the US president continued to push for an end to a conflict he had promised he could finish on his first day in office. Those talks appeared to result in little progress towards a deal, but sparked concern among some in Europe that Mr Trump could seek to pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky into accepting a deal without sufficient security guarantees. On Monday, Sir Keir and Mr Macron joined other European leaders in travelling to Washington in a show of support for Mr Zelensky during a meeting with Mr Trump. Meanwhile, the UK and Russia traded sanctions as London sought to increase the pressure on Moscow to end its invasion. Europe minister Stephen Doughty unveiled sanctions on a series of organisations linked to Kyrgyzstan's financial services sector, saying they had been involved in Kremlin attempts to 'soften the blow of our sanctions by laundering transactions through dodgy crypto networks'. Russia in turn sanctioned 21 individuals, including former Labour MP Denis MacShane, several journalists, and the Government-appointed independent reviewer of terrorism legislation, Jonathan Hall.
