Brazil Offers to Mediate in Ukraine War

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has offered to mediate the ongoing war in Ukraine, expressing Brazil's willingness to act as a diplomatic bridge between Moscow and Kyiv.
The offer came during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on May 9, according to a report by CNN Brasil.
Lula's proposal is part of Brazil's broader push to position itself as a neutral global player capable of supporting international peace efforts.
Speaking at a press conference after his visit to Russia, Lula revealed that he discussed the Ukraine conflict with Putin before, during, and after their official talks.
He
stressed
that Brazil is prepared to cooperate with China and other nations to help narrow the divide between the warring sides, should both Russia and Ukraine demonstrate genuine interest in constructive negotiations.
This diplomatic move comes amid growing frustration over stalled ceasefire attempts and increasing battlefield escalation. It also highlights Brazil's growing role in advocating alternative solutions outside of Western-led frameworks.
Brazilian newspaper O Globo previously reported that Lula's administration is motivated to step in due to what it sees as the failure of US-led diplomatic initiatives.
According to the report, there is a growing belief within Brazil that the White House has fallen short of its commitments to end the conflict. The Brazilian government reportedly views Russia as more open to peace talks than the European Union or Ukrainian authorities.
Celso Amorim, President Lula's senior adviser, has referenced the joint Brazil-China peace initiative and reaffirmed Lula's intention to act as a peace envoy during his May visit to Moscow. This initiative seeks to revive global momentum toward a political solution to a war that has dragged on for more than two years.

Austria Launches Major Green Hydrogen Project
Israa Farhan Austria is set to become a key player in Europe's green energy transition with the announcement of a major hydrogen initiative by OMV, the country's leading oil and gas group. The company has unveiled plans to construct one of the largest green hydrogen electrolysis plants in Europe, aiming for an annual production capacity of 23,000 tonnes. The facility will be located in Bruck an der Leitha, in Austria's Burgenland state, and will be powered by renewable wind energy with an installed capacity of 140 megawatts. The project marks a significant step in Austria's broader strategy to achieve climate neutrality and cut carbon emissions. OMV, which is partially owned by the Austrian state, is positioning this project as a cornerstone of its commitment to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. The company's CEO, Alfred Stern, described the green hydrogen strategy as a milestone in OMV's decarbonisation roadmap, emphasising the plant's pivotal role in transitioning from grey to green hydrogen.
