UAE man fined over ₹16 lakh for posting negative online review against business

The Al Ain Court for Civil, Commercial, and Administrative Claims delivered the verdict after the owner of a commercial establishment filed a case, stating that the man's online comments had tarnished his shop's image and caused a significant drop in sales. The claimant had initially sought Dh200,000 in compensation for both material and moral damages, along with legal expenses and court fees.
According to the complaint, the man had posted harmful comments about the business on a social media platform, which the court confirmed had negatively impacted the company's reputation. The defendant had already been found guilty of the act in a previous criminal court ruling.

During the civil proceedings, the man submitted a written defence urging the court to dismiss the compensation claim. He also requested the Federal Tax Authority to provide the business's tax records to determine whether there had truly been a drop in sales during the time of the alleged defamation. Additionally, he submitted supporting documents, including a dependent's certificate and screenshots of online chats.

However, the court upheld the earlier judgement and concluded that the man had indeed committed defamation. He was ordered to pay Dh70,000 to the businessman as compensation.

ED grills Suresh Raina for 8 hours in illegal betting apps probe
The Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday questioned former India cricketer Suresh Raina for more than eight hours in its money laundering probe against illegal online betting platforms. The agency also recorded Raina's statement under the prevention of money laundering act (PMLA).(PTI) Raina, who was seen interacting with the ED staff and CISF personnel outside the agency's office, marked his attendance at 11 am, and left around 8 pm, PTI reported. Raina allegedly undertook certain endorsements for the betting app. The ED interrogated the former Indian cricketer to understand his links with the app, any endorsement fee which he might have received, and the mode of communication used between both parties, PTI quoted sources as saying. Meanwhile, an ED officer said that 'another former Indian cricketer has also been asked to appear before the agency', without naming the individual. The agency, which is calling several celebrities with links to betting apps for interrogation, had also summoned representatives of Google and Meta for questioning as part of the probe. The ED is investigating multiple such cases which involve illegal betting apps, and has also questioned tech firms and media houses' representatives who have received money in the form of advertisements from them. The apps under the scanner have allegedly duped several people and investors of crores of rupees, while also evading taxes. There are around 22 crore Indians using such online betting apps, with half of them being regular users, according to PTI. The online betting app market in India is worth over USD 100 billion, PTI quoted experts as saying. In relation to online betting, the union ministry of information and broadcasting had, in 2023, issued four advisories to newspapers, broadcast news channels, entertainment channels, publishers of online news and current affairs content, online advertisement intermediaries, and social media platforms to not advertise these platforms. However, despite the advisories, celebrities from the entertainment and sports fields continued to endorse such apps, with some of them now being under the ED scanner, according to an officer.

(HT Archive) The Yashobhoomi Convention and Exhibition Centre in Dwarka, southwest Delhi, has won the International Architecture Award 2024 under the 'Civic Centre' category, which will be presented next month at the historic Acropolis in Athens, Greece, a globally recognised landmark in architecture. The prize is awarded by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, and The European Centre for Architecture Art, Design and Urban Studies. Dikshu C Kukreja, managing principal of CP Kukreja Architects, which designed the centre, said: 'Yashobhoomi embodies Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of positioning India as a leading global hub.' Designed in collaboration with IDOM (Spain), Yashobhoomi spans 225 acres and has a built-up area of 2.2 million square feet. It was inaugurated in September 2023 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The venue, built at a cost of ₹5,400 crore, features multiple exhibition halls, auditoriums and conference rooms to host trade and diplomatic events. Kukreja said the Union ministry of commerce selected them for the global competition. The firm is renowned for designing the Jawaharlal Nehru University and the Ambadeep Towers in Delhi. It was recently internationally recognised for designing the Madhya Pradesh state secretariat and Gautam Buddha University. Recalling that the project's conceptualisation involved close collaboration with retired IAS officer Amitabh Kant, who was also the G20 Sherpa, to ensure the facility could host high-profile gatherings, such as the G20 Summit. After the award was announced, Kant thanked the Prime Minister on the social media platform X, 'for the vision and opportunity to conceptualise and drive it as Secretary DIPP (Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion)'. What sets Yashobhoomi apart, Kukreja said, is its fusion of modern technology with traditional Indian identity. 'It's easy to copy global examples from Germany, Korea, or the US; but for me, it was essential to root the design in India's ethos—through stepwell-inspired forms, jali screens, aangan-like light courts, and interiors steeped in Indian art and motifs.' He said the exhibition hall spans an area equivalent to four football fields. The venue features a 100-metre column-free span and the world's largest LED facade. 'The venue is also India's first to incorporate retractable seating that can transform a 6,000-seater hall into a flat-floored multi-purpose space at the touch of a button,' he said. Large venues like this often turn into 'white elephants' due to a lack of versatility. 'So, we ensured that the hall can have multiple uses,' he said. Kukreja said sustainability was a core design priority, and this secured the Indian Green Building Council's platinum rating. 'Steel was chosen to minimise localised pollution. This ensured durability and lower carbon impact, while featuring recycled materials, locally sourced granite and marble, and off-site fabricated glass-reinforced concrete,' he said. Kukreja said the award was more than personal recognition. 'This is about India creating architecture the world talks about and respects.'

"Scared To Go Out": Indian Man To Leave Ireland After Violent Attack
London: An Indian man living in Dublin, who was attacked by a group of teenagers over the weekend, has said he is returning to India after the incident and that members of the community are feeling scared in Ireland. The man, who did not wish to be named, told Irish media that he was attacked by three people on Sunday evening as he walked home from Fairview Park when one of the group, while riding an electric scooter, kicked him in the stomach. As he tried to walk away, two others joined in the attack and started hitting him, he told 'The Journal'. The group continued to kick and punch him even after he fell to the ground and one of them took the man's metal water bottle and hit him above the eye, causing a deep cut and heavy bleeding. He was later taken to hospital, where he received stitches for his injuries. The Irish police said it was investigating the incident, the latest in a string of recent incidents of violent assaults on members of the Indian community. The man said his parents, based in India, were concerned after the attack and asked him to consider returning, which he has now organised. He added that many of his friends are now 'scared to go outside' and some are planning on going back to India as a result. Ambassador of India to Ireland Akhilesh Mishra had a meeting with Tony Tighe, Detective Inspector, Liaison and Protection, and Ciaran P Nunan, Inspector of An Garda Síochána, the Indian Embassy in Ireland said in a social media statement on Wednesday. It followed Ireland President Michael D Higgins issuing a strongly worded statement to 'unequivocally' condemn the 'despicable attacks' on members of the Indian community. 'The recent despicable attacks on members of the Indian community stand in stark contradiction to the values that we as a people hold dear,' said Higgins on Tuesday. The president's intervention followed a similarly firm statement by the Archbishop of Dublin against the 'truly shocking' and "unprovoked" attacks. On Monday, the Ireland India Council announced the postponement of its annual 'India Day' celebrations, planned in Dublin for Sunday, amid security concerns for the community. An Garda Síochána, the Irish police force, has said that its investigations into the recent attacks remain ongoing and that it is 'liaising with the injured parties in each case'.
