Ola Electric's 90 Per cent Outlets To Be Shut Down In Maharashtra: Report

NDTV16-07-2025
The state government of Maharashtra has decided to shut down 90 per cent of the showrooms of electric two-wheeler manufacturer Ola Electric, as per Livemint's report. This translates to a closure of 450 stores in the state. The report suggests that the reason behind the closure is the lack of permits for storing vehicles. When implemented, the move tends to disrupt the supply of two-wheeler electric vehicles in one of the largest markets.
Maharashtra is one of the biggest consumer states in the country in terms of electric two-wheeler EVs. For the same reason, it is a crucial market for Ola Electric. More than 41,000 of Ola's 344,000 sales across the country came from this state, highlighting its importance to their sales figures and brand visibility. However, the company is encountering difficulties in Maharashtra, as the majority of its showrooms in the area do not possess valid trade certificates, which points to significant issues with operational compliance.
Ola's market share has experienced a decrease on a year-over-year basis, declining from 33.4 per cent to 19.6 per cent after the sale of 60,500 EVs in the first quarter of FY26. This decline follows prior regulatory scrutiny due to a gap between reported sales (25,000) and actual registrations (8,500). The company is now contending with heightened competition, as rivals such as TVS and Bajaj have outperformed Ola in June sales, complicating its recovery from operational and legal issues.
This comes while the brand has initiated the deliveries of its first electric motorcycle in the country, called the Ola Roadster X. The electric motorcycle was launched in India in February 2025.

Autorickshaw union plans to launch app to tackle refusal menace in Mumbai

Mumbai: The Mumbai Rickshawmen's Union on Sunday announced its plan to launch an app aimed at combating the refusal menace. The app will assure commuters of a ride and allow autorickshaw bookings while ensuring payment is made only by the RTO-approved meter. Union leader Thampy Kurien, who proposed the idea to the transport department, is set to demonstrate it to officials at Mantralaya this week. "Unlike Ola and Uber, our app will not calculate fares that are low, very high, or dynamic in nature. It will merely book an auto and ensure pickup from your doorstep or wherever you are waiting. After the pickup, the driver will flag down the meter and take you to the destination, collecting the actual fare as per the meter, " Kurien told TOI. It will seek MMRTA approval for any fare above the RTO-approved meter fare, said Kurien. He explained that the app's necessity arises after a series of refusals by auto drivers. Police statistics indicate there were nearly 4.7 lakh challans in 2024 for refusals by autos and taxis, with auto refusals accounting for over 70%. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Interested in Investing? Kurien further indicated that he plans to challenge Ola and Uber autorickshaws operations in the city in Bombay high court. These vehicles do not operate by the meter despite drivers possessing state badges and permits, which require that vehicles function "only by the meter". Uber and Ola officials were unavailable for comment. Kurien also plans to petition the transport department to regulate autorickshaw operations outside railway stations. "At present, there are three different groups of autos – one which stands in queue and picks up passengers with no questions asked, the other which picks up while on the go, and a third group of cartel which parks autos at a distance and demands hefty share fares for popular destinations such as Linking Road, beaches, waterfronts, promenades, etc," he said. "We want govt to have a single queue outside all railway stations. If autorickshaws do not want to join this queue, they will have to drop passengers and leave the station precincts immediately. Those in queue should observe discipline and ferry all passengers – short or long distance," he added.

Ola Electric revises IPO fund use amid gigafactory delay

Ola Electric has revised the use of its ₹5,275 crore IPO proceeds following a delay in expanding its battery cell gigafactory. The company's board has approved changes in fund utilisation timelines, citing slower EV market growth . "Proposed variation in the objects / terms of utilisation of the Initial Public Offering ('IPO') proceeds and extension of time limit for utilisation of IPO proceeds ('Proposed Variation')," said in an exchange filing. Earlier aiming for a 20 GWh capacity by 2026, Ola now plans to limit its Tamil Nadu facility to 5 GWh till FY2029. Only ₹2,681 crore of the IPO proceeds have been used; ₹2,594 crore remains unutilised, including ₹1,228 crore initially marked for cell manufacturing expansion. The change impacts Ola's commitment under the Centre's ₹18,100 crore PLI scheme for battery storage . The company may face up to ₹100 crore in penalties for missing milestones. It is currently engaging with the government to revise the scheme's timelines. Ola has begun cell production, and integration into its EVs is expected by the festive season. The decision reflects broader trends in the Indian EV space, where the pace of adoption has not matched earlier projections. Ola's revised manufacturing strategy signals a more cautious, demand-driven approach as the company adjusts its long-term capital plans.

No free repair: Lawyer sues e-scooter firm, wins Rs 25,000 in damages

Bengaluru: After being denied free repairs during the warranty period and forced to pay to retrieve his vehicle, a city-based customer has won a relief package through the Bengaluru Urban district consumer disputes redressal commission. The commission has pulled up Ola Electric Technologies Pvt Ltd and ordered compensation, including litigation costs. The story began on June 10, 2024, when a Bengaluru lawyer purchased an Ola S1X electric scooter. The vehicle was delivered on June 14, 2024, with a three-year warranty, covering all parts except consumables such as oil, paint, and brakes. However, within a year of use, the rear wheel rim was found bent, the tyre leaked air, and the front left brake stopped functioning — problems the resident alleged were due to poor material quality. On March 13, 2025, the buyer approached the Ola service centre to have the defects fixed under warranty. A technician named Santosh promised it would be resolved within a day. But on March 14, the technician informed the buyer that the scooter was handed over to a mechanic outside the Ola network and asked him to transfer money to a personal bank account for repairs. The buyer was shocked when told that the scooter wouldn't be returned unless he paid. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Top 25 Most Beautiful Women In The World Articles Vally Undo You Can Also Check: Bengaluru AQI | Weather in Bengaluru | Bank Holidays in Bengaluru | Public Holidays in Bengaluru Stunned by the demand, the buyer wrote to Ola's customer service, attaching pictures and a detailed complaint. But there was no response. When he visited the service centre on March 15, he found the scooter parked with its rear wheel removed. Even after more follow-up emails on March 17, Ola didn't act. With no way around, the complainant on March 18 transferred Rs 1,400 to a mobile number provided by the technician and was later made to pay Rs 235 more as labour charges — a total of Rs 1,635 — just to retrieve the scooter. WhatsApp messages and photos submitted as evidence showed the repairs were carried out by an unauthorised third-party mechanic. The buyer argued this was a violation of Ola's warranty clause that repairs done by non-Ola-certified personnel are not permitted. He later received a bill on WhatsApp, which showed the scooter was repaired outside the Ola service network. The lawyer stated in his affidavit that he paid under protest to retrieve his vehicle and sent a legal notice to Ola on March 20, 2025, but in vain. Frustrated, the lawyer filed a consumer complaint on April 7, 2025, alleging service deficiency. The company did not appear before the commission despite receiving notice, nor did it file any written version of its defence. After going through all the proof, the commission said Ola failed to provide free repair during the warranty period, made illegal monetary demands, and caused mental, emotional, and financial distress. The commission noted: "Even though the complainant is a lawyer and knows his rights, he was compelled to pay for repairs unlawfully. If this is the treatment given to a legal professional, what would be the fate of a common consumer?" The commission has directed Ola to immediately discontinue such unfair trade practices. The commission on July 15 ordered the company to refund Rs 1,635 with 6% annual interest from the date of payment, apart from paying Rs 20,000 for mental harassment and Rs 5,000 as litigation costs.
