Kota Kinabalu: An unemployed man was fined RM100 or three days' jail by the Magistrate's Court here, Tuesday, for failing to explain a cash deposit of RM22,500 into his bank account last year. Johnny Tamin, 32, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Yusdi to failing to provide a reasonable explanation as to how he obtained the money belonging to one Murni Jaiman, which had been deposited into a bank account belonging to him. The offence was committed on July 22, 2024 at Putatan, near here. Johnny was charged under Section 22A(1) of the Minor Offences Ordinance which provides for a fine of RM100 or up to three months' jail, or both, on conviction. The facts of the case, presented by the prosecution, stated that the complainant's money was transferred into Johnny's bank account after the complainant fell victim to an online scam. The victim received a call from an unknown number and the caller identified himself as a police officer. The caller claimed that the victim's mother's bank account had been used in money laundering activities and that her bank card would be seized. Frightened and anxious, the victim followed all instructions given and provided her mother's banking details. Several days later, the victim conducted a check with the bank and discovered that a series of withdrawals had been made from her mother's account. Suspecting that she and her mother had been scammed by the caller, she immediately lodged a police report. Johnny requested for a lenient sentence. In another case, 11 people were penalised for committing drug-related offences. Three of them – Mohd Jamdi Yadik, Eddy Sorudin and Samil Ajak –pleaded guilty to having syabu weighing 0.07gm, 0.06gm and 0.03gm, respectively, in Manggatal between Dec 14, 2024 and Feb 6, this year. Jamdi was fined RM2,600 or nine months' jail while Eddy and Samil were each jailed seven months. Having drugs under Section 12 (2) of the DDA provides for a fine of up to RM100,000 or up to five years' jail, or both, on conviction. Meanwhile, Samil and eight men were punished for taking syabu and amphetamine. Samil, Md Kasim Ahmad, Mansuruddin Abdul, Caleb Samuel, Murad Jaim, Teanne Dangkar, Mazlan Nazri, Azman Karim and Rosdin Jali admitted to committing the offence between November 2024 and February this year. Kasim was fined RM2,300 or seven months' jail, Caleb and Mazlan were handed eight months jail while the rest received seven months jail each. Taking drugs under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years' jail on conviction. Jobless jailed, fined for hurting son

Kota Kinabalu: A 43-year-old jobless was jailed six years and fined RM2,000 in default three months for causing hurt to his son with a wooden stick. Shahmar Asecio pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Marlina Ibrahim, to the charge against him. Advertisement He hurt to his 16-year-old son by hitting him with the wood at 11.30am on June 2, this year at a house in Kg Baitam Laut, Membakut. The offence is framed under Section 324/326A of the Penal Code. The court ordered Shahmar to serve the jail sentence concurrently with the sentence for another offence. In mitigation, Shahmar who was not represented asked for a lenient sentence. Advertisement However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Afiqah Alya urged the court to impose a heavy sentence to deter and give a lesson not only to Shahmar but public at large from committing such offence. The court heard that while the son was in the kitchen Shahmar came from behind and hit him with wood on his shoulder, head and right leg. The victim's mother then tried to stop Shahmar who suddenly took a machete and threatened the victim with the weapon. Processing, sale of ketum juice: 4 arrested in Kota Belud

KOTA BELUD: Four men aged between 20 and 50 were arrested in separate raids across several villages in the district for suspected involvement in the processing and sale of ketum juice. Kota Belud District Police Chief Supt Shahrudin Mat Husain said a team from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division of Kota Belud District Police Headquarters (IPD) conducted the raids from May 24 to June 5. Advertisement He said the arrests were made following intelligence gathering in Kampung Taun Gusi, Tampasuk 1, Kampung Suang Punggur, Kampung Pintasan and Kampung Ambong. 'The first arrest involved a man at a house in Kampung Pintasan at 11.30am, along with the seizure of eight bottles containing 1.5 litres of ketum juice. 'In the second raid at 3.25pm at a house in Kampung Taun Gusi, a man was arrested along with 24 bottles, each containing 1.5 litres of ketum juice,' he said. On June 5, a raid was conducted at a house in Kampung Ambong where another two men were arrested along with 10 bottles containing 1.5 litres of ketum juice. Advertisement 'Several items believed used to prepare the ketum juice were also seized. 'Further investigations revealed that the ketum juice was sold to customers at RM25 to RM30 per bottle,' he said. Man charged with drug trafficking in Inanam
KOTA KINABALU (June 6): A 29-year-old man was tentatively charged in the Magistrate's Court here with trafficking 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) weighing 61.6 grams. No plea was recorded from the accused, Wilkie Wong, when he appeared before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin. Wong is accused of committing the offence near a police beat in Inanam at around 1.30am on May 29. The charge falls under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and is punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same Act. If convicted, he faces the death penalty or life imprisonment, along with whipping. The court fixed July 21 for re-mention of the case. Wong will remain in custody pending further proceedings.
