Kolkata: In a first, a long-term study for abundance and density estimation has been done for hornbills in Bengal. The study conducted between 2018 and 2024, covered north Bengal's Buxa Tiger Reserve, Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, Latpanchar, a fringe village outside Mahananda, Neora Valley and adjoining forests of Kalimpong.
Bengal is home to five species of hornbills — great Indian hornbill, rufous-necked hornbill, grey hornbill, oriental pied hornbill and wreathed hornbill.
The study is a Nature Mates-Nature Club and Nature Conservation Foundation collaboration, currently funded by Habitat Trust.

While Buxa and Mahananda have scored high in terms of density-abundance and encounter rate of oriental pied hornbill — considered to be among the smallest of Asian hornbills — Latpanchar has recorded good density of rufous-necked hornbills — considered 'vulnerable' on IUCN Red list.
"To estimate hornbill density, abundance and distribution in Buxa, an occupancy-based survey was done over Sept-March of 2019-2020 and 2020-2021," said Sitaram Mahato of Nature Mates. "The estimated density of the three large-bodied species was low — less than 1 bird per sqkm — while that of the oriental pied hornbill was around 11 birds per sq km. Abundance estimates — number of individuals in a population — ranged from a mean of 27 birds for rufous-necked hornbill, 161 for great hornbill, 375 for wreathed hornbill and 8,050 for oriental pied hornbill at Buxa," said Shilpita Mandal of Nature Mates.

Since Dec 2021, transect surveys to estimate hornbill population, abundance in Latpanchar, a fringe village of Mahananda located at an elevation of 1,100 m, was also conducted. From Dec 2021 to Dec 2023, in a total effort of 344.9 km, density estimate for rufous-necked hornbill was 9.6 /sq km. "Average encounter rates for direct sightings of Rufous-necked hornbill was 0.3/km and for the great hornbill was close to 0.1," said Kesang Dukka of Nature Mates.
"We also conducted a park-wide survey in Mahananda between Nov 19 and Dec 12, 2023. In a total effort of 40.5 km, there were 16 detections of oriental pied hornbill. There were 5 detections of great hornbills. But, during the survey, there were no detections of rufous-necked and Indian grey hornbill. Overall encounter rate (detections/km) for oriental pied hornbills was 0.4/km. The same for great hornbills was 0.1/km," NCF's Karishma Pradhan said, adding that in 2018, in a rapid survey at Neora Valley, there were at least 10 detections of rufous-necked in an effort of about 60 km.
It also highlighted breeding biology of hornbills, with nesting success of 81% in Buxa and 88% in Mahananda-Latpanchar. Hornbill conservation action plan was done with funding from Conservation Leadership Programme.

Museum opens at Welham Girls' School documenting institute's history

1 2 3 Dehradun: Welham Girls' School has inaugurated a new museum on its campus to document the school's history since its founding in 1957. The museum has been set up in Nasreen, a Neo-Tudor-style building that was once part of the Nizam's estate and served as the school's first building. The museum traces the origins of the all-girls' residential school, established ten years after Independence by Hersilia Susie Oliphant and Grace Mary Linnell. It includes archival material, photographs, personal notes, and memorabilia from former principals and alumnae, highlighting milestones from the school's early years to the present. Romesh Sobti, president of the school's board of governors, said the museum is a tribute to the institution's history and its role in advancing girls' education in post-Independence India. The event was attended by two alumni Neelam Khanna (batch of 1965), who served as chief guest, and Premila Nazir (batch of 1957), the school's first registered student who was the guest of honour. Both shared memories from their time at Welham and reflected on its founding years. Principal Vibha Kapoor said the museum was created to preserve the school's heritage and to inspire current and future students by highlighting its founding values and evolution. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 3BHK Transformation Possible for ₹4.5 Lakh? In Zeenat and Yamuna, Similipal shows the way for tiger translocation in country

1 2 Bhubaneswar: Inter-state tiger translocation, which had hit a speed-breaker following the bitter experience of 2018, has finally borne fruit with Similipal Tiger Reserve showing the way. Lessons learnt from the failed translocation of Tigress Sundari and male tiger MB2, both introduced to Satkosia Tiger Reserve from Madhya Pradesh, helped pave the way for the success story, six years later. This could also open the way for tiger translocations across the country. This time, Zeenat and Yamuna, brought from Maharashtra, adapted seamlessly to their new environment, with Zeenat being captured with a male mate, T-12, raising hopes of her pregnancy and the infusion of a fresh genetic pool in the reserve, which has 50% melanistic cats. Yamuna has also settled in a place close to Kuldhia Wildlife Sanctuary, part of the Similipal biosphere. There were initial hiccups with Zeenat dispersing soon after its release, keeping forest personnel of three states on tenterhooks for 22 days. "After Zeenat was captured on Dec 29 last year from West Bengal, she was released back into a soft enclosure on Jan 1. A large enclosure was then built, and it was kept under observation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brain tumor has left my son feeling miserable; please help! Donate For Health Donate Now Undo We didn't want to take any chances and waited for the right moment to release her again. On showing signs of estrus, male T-12 came close to Zeenat's enclosure. Taking the opportunity, she was finally released into the wild on April 17," chief wildlife warden Prem Kumar Jha said. He said it has been more than three months since her second release, and her movement, tracked through a radio collar, has been very satisfactory with no further sign of dispersion. "She is moving within the deep core," Jha added. With approval from National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), both tigresses were chosen from Tadoba-Andheri Tiger Reserve. Zeenat, now 3.8 years old, was brought to Similipal on Nov 13, while 3.4-year-old Yamuna was brought on Oct 27 last year. The wildlife wing planned a new and larger enclosure, spanning eight hectares (around 20 acres), in Similipal south division. The small enclosure was earlier used by tigress Yamuna. "The large enclosure, constant monitoring, and natural prey hunt helped us make her (Zeenat) as wild as she was when brought," Jha further said. Similipal recently confirmed the birth of three melanistic tiger cubs after they obtained camera trap evidence of them roaming with their mother, T-20, a melanistic female. The birth of cubs signalled Similipal's robustness in terms of habitat management and protection mechanisms. Wildlife officials said the cubs are now four-to-five months old and have reached a certain height to come under camera trap. "We have altogether 32 adult tigers in Similipal," a wildlife officer said. The birth of healthy cubs and their survival, and the expected delivery of Zeenat, could further the purpose of translocation and breeding success, thus positioning Similipal as a leader with the potential to rival the Sunderbans in the future.

Atsu seeks preservation of Ahom-era monuments in Sivasagar, revival of Pohugarh & Jamuna Lake

Dibrugarh: All Tai Ahom Students' Union (Atsu) on Monday sought urgent govt intervention for the preservation of Ahom-era monuments, resolution of waterlogging issues, and the revival of Asia's first natural zoo, Pohugarh. The student body also raised concerns over encroachment at Jamuna Lake, a centuries-old water body built during the Ahom dynasty at a press conference at the historic Rang Ghar in Sivasagar. Atsu Sivasagar district executive president, Madhujya Chetia, outlined key demands. "The Ahom monuments in Sivasagar are symbols of our heritage and pride. However, neglect and poor maintenance threaten their existence," Chetia said. The student body highlighted the need for scientific conservation of Ahom-era structures, including the Rang Ghar, Talatal Ghar, and Kareng Ghar. Chetia said these monuments witness heavy footfall daily, raising concerns about structural safety. "The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) must conduct a scientific assessment of the people-carrying capacity of these monuments. We need to know how many visitors these structures can safely accommodate at a time," he added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Highest Paying Degrees For 2025 Best Paying Degrees | Search Ads Learn More Undo Another pressing issue highlighted was the persistent waterlogging problem at Rang Ghar after heavy rainfall. The iconic amphitheatre, often called Asia's oldest surviving pavilion, suffers from poor drainage, leading to waterlogging. "Every monsoon, water accumulates on the Rang Ghar campus. It faces structural threats from accumulated water that seeps into its foundation. The govt must take immediate steps to improve drainage and prevent further deterioration," the Atsu leader said. He demanded the revival of Pohugarh, believed to be Asia's first natural zoo, established during the reign of Ahom King Swargadeo Rudra Singha. Once a thriving wildlife sanctuary, Pohugarh now lies in neglect. "Pohugarh is a testament to the Ahom dynasty's vision for wildlife conservation. The govt must restore it to its former glory and promote it as a heritage tourism site," Chetia said. The union raised alarm over illegal encroachments around Jamuna Lake, a serene water body built during the Ahom rule. The lake, once a vital water source, is now shrinking due to unauthorised constructions. "Jamuna Lake is part of our history, but encroachers are destroying it. The administration must clear all illegal occupations and protect this heritage site," Chetia added. Atsu has given the authorities a one-week deadline to respond to their demands and initiate concrete preservation measures.
