Packers' Keisean Nixon open to returning kickoffs again in 2025
Green Bay Packers cornerback and All-Pro returner Keisean Nixon admitted frustration played a part in his postgame comments following January's playoff loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, and he's open to being the team's kickoff returner in 2025.
"I was kind of frustrated when the season was over," Nixon said Tuesday. "Of course, I'm open to it. I'm always going to do what the team needs. Also, knowing who I am as a person, if the game's on the line, I'm going to want the ball anyway."
In the minutes following the Packers' loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Wild Card Round, Nixon -- who fumbled the opening kickoff after a helmet-to-helmet hit -- expressed a desire to be done returning kickoffs so he could focus on his increasing responsibilities at cornerback.
Time provided Nixon with a different perspective as the Packers now work through the offseason workout program this spring.
"That's probably a comment I could have kept to myself, for real, but it is what it is," Nixon said. "I meant what I said, but I'm also a team player. And if the coach and the team need me to do something, I'm going to do it for sure."
Nixon led the NFL in kickoffs and kickoff return yards in both 2022 and 2023, leading to All-Pro honors both seasons. He averaged 29.3 yards per kickoff return in 2024 but got only 18 opportunities.
Nixon said the adjusted kickoff rules for 2025 -- which will give the offense the ball at the 35-yard line following kickoffs -- probably won't affect how teams approach kicking him the ball.
"The rule change don't matter. I don't think they are going to freely kick me the ball. They would rather get the ball at the 35 than to the 50, so I think it'll be the same," Nixon said.
The Packers signed veteran returner Mecole Hardman this offseason, and first-round pick Matthew Golden and third-round pick Savion Williams have kickoff return experience, so Matt LaFleur and Rich Bisaccia will have options on special teams.

Commanders Trade Trey Hendrickson Would Mean Major Change in NFC East Rankings
Commanders Trade Trey Hendrickson Would Mean Major Change in NFC East Rankings originally appeared on Athlon Sports. One move could change everything. The Washington Commanders might be as good as any team in the NFL with a roster quickly fortified over the course of a year into one with legit Super Bowl hopes. Advertisement And they are coached by Dan Quinn, a defensive line guy by trade. And yet ...they have allowed themselves to get this far with a defensive line - and in this case, a defensive tackle pairing - that occupies the basement in our NFC East rankings. Maybe that's because some of the other teams have standouts in their prime. But if Washington can really catch the Philadelphia Eagles while fending off the Dallas Cowboys (and maybe the New York Giants)? The Commanders will have to get surprising stellar play from their last-place tandem. Or ... Trade for Cincinnati Bengals unhappy superstar Trey Hendrickson. Advertisement That rumor won't go away, as he's seeking at least $30 million per year for his work, which features back-to-back seasons of 17.5 sacks. Wanna flip our rankings, courtesy of NFC East beat writer Anthony Licciardi? Flip Trey to Washington. But for now ... 1. Philadelphia Eagles: Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis Philadelphia has two gigantic starting linemen that teams cannot ignore. Carter is a rising star and one of the best defensive tackles in the league. Davis hasn't quite risen to stardom, but his blend of size and athleticism causes run-stuffing issues. 2. New York Giants: Dexter Lawrence, Darius Alexander Lawrence is a fully-fledged superstar and has made an excellent argument to be the best defensive tackle in the sport. However, New York's weak link on the defensive line was at its second defensive tackle spot in 2024. Alexander could rectify that. Advertisement 3. Dallas Cowboys: Osa Odighizua, Mazi Smith Odighizuwa is among the most underrated players in the sport and was rewarded as such with a four-year, $80 million deal in March. Mazi Smith, meanwhile, is still a work in progress. ... a first-round pick who is still figuring things out. 4. Washington Commanders: Daron Payne, Javon Kinlaw And more irony, as on name value alone, Washington deserves to be ranked higher. But after last season's struggles, it's clear this is a bottom-two pairing in the division. Payne is coming off perhaps the worst season of his career, logging just 43 tackles and four sacks. He struggled against the run, demanding the Commanders get more physical up front in the offseason. They did just that, but ... Advertisement The signing of Javon Kinlaw to a three-year, $45 million deal seems like an overpay as he too struggled mightily in 2024. If the Washington "brand-name'' guys can live up to those names? Maybe the Commanders climb out of the basement in this ranking ... and climb all the way to the Super Bowl. Or ... go get the guy who would make a major difference right now. Packers' $77 Million Free Agent Explains Key Factor Behind Signing With Team
Packers' $77 Million Free Agent Explains Key Factor Behind Signing With Team originally appeared on Athlon Sports. For the second offseason in a row, the Green Bay Packers were active players in free agency. They signed former Las Vegas Raiders cornerback Nate Hobbs to strengthen their secondary. Along with making former San Francisco 49ers guard Aaron Banks the highest-paid guard in this year's free-agent class, they also added former Kansas City Chiefs receiver Mecole Hardman to boost the offense. Advertisement The Packers improved from a 9-8 record in 2023 to 11-6 in 2024. If that upward trend continues, they should be strong contenders for the NFC's top seed in 2025. There is a sense of urgency within the organization to compete for championships, and they have made notable strides over the past two years—reaching the postseason while being the youngest team in the league. Green Bay should be closer to a title run than most teams in 2025, and that Super Bowl belief is what drew one of their top free-agent signings to join the Packers this year. Green Bay Packers HC Matt LaFleur, left, talks with GM Brian Gutekunst during 2023 OTAs.© Mark Hoffman-Imagn Images "They've been in the playoffs every year and it's a young team and guys are only getting better," Banks said via Wes Hodkiewicz. Advertisement "As the younger guys on this team start to become older guys and then we start to bring everybody along, I just think we're really close. I think we have all the tools and all the pieces to get there, and not only get there but win it." Banks should be Green Bay's starting left guard. Elgton Jenkins will likely move to center, with Zach Tom and Rasheed Walker holding down the tackle spots. The right guard position is the most open for competition, but Sean Rhyan should start the season there. Aaron Banks has 43 career starts, including the San Francisco 49ers' 25-22 Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. With over 2,963 career snaps at left guard, he arrives in Green Bay to add even more physicality up front. His $77 million deal is a big bet on the Packers' part—and while the narrative this offseason has been that it was an overpay, that will not matter if he balls out and puts together a Pro Bowl-caliber season in his first year wearing green and gold.
