The shooting, believed to be linked to ongoing taxi-related tensions, has drawn widespread condemnation from both the taxi industry and the provincial government.
Mandla Hermanus, chairperson of South African Taxi Council, SANTACO Western Cape, said the industry was 'deeply disturbed' by the violence and called on law enforcement to act swiftly.
'We condemn this brutal and criminal act in the strongest possible terms. There can be no tolerance for violence in our industry or communities,' said Hermanus.
'We urge all operators to remain calm and exercise maximum restraint. This incident must not be allowed to derail the efforts underway to build peace and unity within the taxi industry across the province.'
Western Cape Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku expressed sorrow and outrage at the shooting, warning against complacency in the face of growing violence at public transport hubs.
'I am shocked and deeply saddened by this senseless act of violence. We cannot allow criminality to take hold of our public transport spaces and threaten the safety of innocent commuters and workers,' said Sileku.
He also called on the public and taxi operators to support the police investigation, saying; 'Those responsible must face the full consequences of the law. We must never become numb to this kind of violence. Behind every life lost is a family, a story, and a future that has been cruelly cut short.'
The Western Cape Government reiterated its commitment to commuter safety, stating that violence in and around transport hubs not only endangers lives but undermines efforts to ensure safe and reliable mobility for all residents.
'Disputes must never be resolved through violence. There is no justification for actions that place innocent lives at risk and disrupt critical transport services,' said the Western Cape mobility department spokesperson, Muneera Allie.

Six rhino horn syndicate suspects granted bail

Five men and a woman accused of being involved in the trafficking of 964 rhino horns valued at R250m were granted bail by the Pretoria magistrate's court on Tuesday. John Frederick Hume, 83, founder and owner of the Platinum Rhino Conservation Enterprise, was granted R100,000 bail. The director of a nonprofit organisation, Elizabeth Catharina Van Niekerk, 58, and transport maintenance manager Clive John Mervan Melville, 63, were granted R10,000 bail each while attorney Izak Hermanus du Toit, 50, insurance broker Mattheus Hendrikus Wessels Poggenpoel, 37, and game reserve manager Johannes Abraham Hennop, 52, were each granted R20,000 bail. 'They are collectively facing a total of 55 charges of multiple counts of racketeering, fraud, contravention of the National Environmental Management Act, contravention of the Riotous Assemblies Act, theft and money laundering,' the National Prosecuting Authority and the Hawks said in a joint statement. It is alleged that between 2017 and 2024, the accused operated an international rhino horn trafficking syndicate and defrauded the department of forestry, fisheries and the environment (DFFE). 'They allegedly obtained permits to trade rhino horn locally, while intending to channel the horns into illegal international markets in Southeast Asia.' The fraudulent scheme was estimated to involve 964 rhino horns valued at R250m. After intensive investigations by the Hawks, the six handed themselves over at the Pretoria Central police station on Tuesday, where they were formally arrested. 'During bail proceedings, they all asked to be released on bail because they were not flight risks and had co-operated with the police.' In his affidavit, Melville disclosed that he had a 2019 conviction for fraud and for being in possession of and transporting rhino horns. He was sentenced to pay a fine. Poggenpoel disclosed that he had a 2009 conviction for possession of a rhino horn and had paid an admission of guilt fine of R2,500. 'Poggenpoel also disclosed that he will be appearing on September 17 at Winburg magistrate's court because during the visit to his residence, the investigation team found ammunition that was not locked away in a safe and supposedly scheduled medicine without a permit.' The state did not oppose bail. The court granted bail and ordered the accused to surrender their passports and not apply for new travel documents while the case was pending. The court ordered the accused to report to their nearest police station once a week, and instructed that they may not interfere with investigations, tamper with evidence or influence witnesses. Philippi smash-and-grab: DA MPs recount terrifying attack

DA Members of Parliament, Ian Cameron, Nicolas Godsell, and Lisa Schickerling were involved in a smash-and-grab incident in Philippi. Image: Ayanda Ndamane / Independent Media Three Democratic Alliance (DA) Members of Parliament responsible for police oversight narrowly escaped a violent smash-and-grab attack in Philippi on Tuesday afternoon. Portfolio Committee on Police Chairperson Ian Cameron, together with colleagues Lisa Schickerling and Nicholas Gotsell, were travelling near the intersection of New Eisleben and Govan Mbeki Roads when unknown suspects broke the windows of their vehicle and began throwing bricks at them. Cameron described the attack as 'horrific'. He recounted: 'They threw bricks at the vehicle. I managed to hit one of them, but they kept coming back. I tried fighting back, and when I looked at Nicholas, his body was on his lap. I took out my gun and shot. I am not sure if I hit anyone. The incident left me with broken teeth, and I had so much blood on my clothes.' Video Player is loading. Cameron said he acted quickly and in self-defence to prevent further harm to his colleagues. The DA condemned the attack and reiterated the urgent need for improved policing in high-crime areas. DA Chief Whip George Michalakis said: 'This incident is a portrayal of the out-of-control crime that South Africans face daily. No one is exempt from it. We again call on the Minister of Police to properly resource SAPS in crime-ridden areas such as Philippi.' Michalakis praised the prompt response of the City of Cape Town Metro, the provincial government, police, and emergency medical services, highlighting that their quick intervention helped prevent further harm to the MPs. Western Cape provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembisile Patekile confirmed that police received a report of the attack and that two people were injured. 'The ambulance was called at the scene. Our teams will get to the bottom of it,' he said. 'In most smash-and-grab incidents, the motive is robbery, hijacking, or theft out of a motor vehicle. At this stage, we do not know what was stolen.' Community leaders condemned the attack. Dumisani Qwebe called it a 'wake-up call' and urged anyone with information to come forward. He noted that the area usually has police visibility and CCTV coverage, which may assist in identifying the suspects. 'That intersection was not so bad, and we are surprised because there is always police visibility, and now we must make sure that it is always monitored. 'There is a CCTV camera, and hopefully we will find something from it.' The DA reiterated that policing is a national function and stressed that adequate resourcing of police stations in crime-ridden communities is vital to prevent similar incidents and ensure the safety of all South Africans.

#HOLLER gala raises R100 000 for GBV awareness

The elegant Bullion Room at Gold Reef City played host to a powerful and purposeful evening on August 8, where the #HOLLER Gala Dinner brought together business leaders, creatives and community changemakers. The event raised R100 000 in donations to support organisations on the frontlines of the fight against GBV. Funds raised will empower the ongoing efforts of SOJO Helping Hands Foundation, Matrix Men, Open Disclosure and Epic Foundation. These organisations work tirelessly to support survivors, raise awareness and educate communities about the devastating impact of GBV in South Africa. Centre manager at Mall of the South, Hester Smith, said: 'This wasn't just about raising funds. It was about raising voices, building bridges and standing united with those who've endured and those who continue to fight for change. To each company that sponsored towards #HOLLER, your generosity and belief in this cause made the #HOLLER Gala Dinner not only possible, but profoundly impactful.' A nation in crisis South Africa continues to face a GBV crisis, with alarming statistics underscoring the urgency of awareness and systemic change: • 33.1% of women over 18 have experienced physical violence • 83 people were trafficked in a single year (official numbers, likely underreported) • 443 unaccompanied Zimbabwean children were intercepted at the SA–SA-Zimbabwe border • One in six adult men has experienced sexual offences • 44% of boys report being sexually abused before age 18 • 40% of gay men report experiencing sexual violence (excluding rape) • R10 billion is the estimated annual cost of GBV to South Africa's economy These numbers reflect not just statistics, but real lives and stories – the driving force behind the #HOLLER campaign and gala event. The evening served not just as a fundraiser but as a platform for reflection, education and unity. Through collective action, powerful conversations and a shared vision, guests were reminded that real change begins with raising awareness and showing up. Thank you The success of the night was made possible by a host of generous sponsors and supporters who invested in change: Sponsors who made it possible were: Gold Reef City, Icarus Media, IV Zeal, Volpes, MAC, Cassims & Co, Ciga Watches, Kase Artist, Chic Jewels, Clicks Mall of the South, Le Morgan, Zaza Nkosi Legacy Wines, Lush Leather, UniQbrows, Mall Marketing Management.
