Amazon's AWS recently lost its vice president overseeing generative artificial intelligence development, as the competition for talent heats up. Vasi Philomin told Reuters in an email that he left Amazon for another company, without providing specifics. A company spokesperson confirmed that Philomin had recently left after eight years with Amazon. Philomin helped lead generative AI efforts and product strategy, and oversaw foundation models known as Amazon Titan The spokesperson said Rajesh Sheth, a vice president previously overseeing Amazon Elastic Block Store, had assumed some of Philomin's responsibilities.In his biography, Philomin said he also helped create and lead Amazon Bedrock, a hub for using multiple AI models and one of AWS's premier products in its battle for AI supremacy. He was a frequent speaker at AWS events, including Amazon's annual cloud computing conference in Las Vegas.Amazon is working to bolster its reputation in AI development, after rivals like OpenAI, and Google have taken an early lead, particularly with consumer-focused models.The Seattle-based online retailer and technology powerhouse has invested $8 billion in AI startup Anthropic and integrated its Claude software into its own products including a new revamped version of voice assistant Alexa that it's rolling out to customers this year.In December, Amazon introduced its Nova AI models which provide for text, video and image generation. Earlier this year, it added to the lineup with a version called Sonic that can more readily produce natural-sounding speech.Companies are employing creative techniques to hire top AI talent, including using sports industry data analysis to help identify undiscovered talent, Reuters reported last month. As a result, compensation has skyrocketed for some.However, as Amazon races to produce more advanced AI, it said it expects its own success will lead to fewer corporate jobs, according to a memo from CEO Andy Jassy last week. Job growth limits will be driven in particular by so-called agentic AI, which can perform tasks with minimal or even no additional input from people."As we roll out more Generative AI and agents, it should change the way our work is done. We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today and more people doing other types of jobs," Jassy wrote.

A viral post claimed companies which are laying off are still looking for H-1Bs to hire. Amid a major layoff being announced by US companies, a post has gone viral which shows that Microsoft, one of the 10 companies employing foreign labor, sought 14,181 H-1Bs. The post shared the H-1B requirements of other companies, including Amazon, NVIDIA, Cisco, Goldman Sachs, Oracle, Apple etc. The post by investigative journalist Amanda Louise noted that despite tech layoffs, H-1B demand hasn't slowed down. "Microsoft just cut thousands of American they've already requested 14,181 more H-1B workers this year, and it's only Q2," the post noted. "If AI is the reason Americans are being let go, why are companies still asking for hundreds of thousands of foreign tech workers? Something doesn't add up." the post added. Social media users reacted to the post, starting the ongoing debate over H-1Bs eating up American jobs at a lower price. "AI: Another Indian," one comment read. "The obvious answer is the H1B system has ALWAYS only been about importing workers to drive down the wages of tech workers. This is why both parties, all the billionaires, and all the CEO's agree on this issue, they don't care about America - they only care about cheap workers!" one user wrote. "Any company that is firing people shouldn't be allowed to apply for H1B visas. There should be some kind of freeze period. This is just ridiculous," another wrote. "Not gonna say where I work but another big tech company. Our bosses frequently go to India on hiring sprees, while laying off thousands here. I need to learn how to farm and get a quiet place on the coast," one shared personal experience. In May, Microsoft announced cut of 6,000 roles targeting sales, management and non-coding roles. Intel plans to eliminate roughly 20 per cent of its workforce, which will come to around 21000 jobs. According to the latest data of the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, the Trump administration selected 120, 141 H-1B visa applications for 2026.

8.5 lakh mule bank accounts used by cyber frauds, CBI raids 42 places
New Delhi: The CBI said on Thursday that it detected around 8.5 lakh mule bank accounts across over 700 branches of different banks, which were being used by cyber scammers. The agency filed an FIR and conducted raids at 42 locations in Delhi, UP, and Rajasthan in connection with the use of these mule accounts in cyber frauds. Nine individuals, including three Delhi residents named Lovkesh Shakya, Savan Kumar, and Vishal, were arrested. Farman Beg and Purushottam from Uttarakhand, Shubham Kamboj and Umardeen from UP, and Yousuf and Ashok from Rajasthan are also among those who have been arrested so far. The CBI's action comes as part of its operation Chakra V. The CBI initially registered a preliminary inquiry to unearth the conspiracy involving mule accounts, the role of bankers, and the middlemen. "The inquiry revealed that more than 700 branches of various banks across India opened around 8.5 lakh mule accounts. These accounts were opened without proper KYC norms, customer due diligence, or initial risk assessment," the CBI's statement said. Hence, an FIR was registered for offences of criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery, and use of forged documents, as well as for criminal misconduct by bank officials under the Prevention of Corruption Act. During the searches, several incriminating documents, digital evidence, mobile phones, bank account opening documents, transaction details, and KYC documents were seized. Individuals, including middlemen involved in opening mule bank accounts, were also identified. These accounts, the CBI said, were being used in a range of crimes, including those carried out by impersonation, fraudulent advertisements, investment traps, and UPI-based financial baits. "The cyber fraudsters are being helped by the commissions and omissions of certain bank officials, agents, aggregators, bank correspondents, middlemen, and e-Mitras who are facilitating the opening of mule accounts used for receiving and transferring proceeds of cyber frauds as well as enabling withdrawals from such accounts," the agency said.
