Over 5,000 Attend East Coast Zone National Science Week Carnival 2025

Barnama24-06-2025
KUALA TERENGGANU, June 24 (Bernama) -- More than 5,000 people attended the East Coast Zone National Science Week (MSN) Carnival 2025, which began today and will run until Thursday at the Terengganu Science and Creativity Centre (PSKT) here.
Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang said MSN served as a key platform to spark interest, raise awareness and strengthen the country's talent ecosystem in the field of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI).
'In facing the wave of new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), digitalisation and the green economy, Malaysia cannot remain merely as consumers. We need to produce creators and leaders.
'MOSTI (the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry) is committed to building local talent inclusively and continuously so that the country is not only prepared but also capable of leading future technological and economic transformations,' he said at the opening ceremony of the carnival today.
Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar officiated the opening of the carnival.
Chang said each activity held at the MSN Carnival was aimed at ensuring that Malaysia would be able to lead future technological and economic transformation by involving various stakeholders, including school students, university students, teachers, researchers, industry players and the public.
He said the programme also complemented the existing school curriculum by incorporating hands-on and interactive co-curricular activities involving experts in STI.
MOSTI would continue to strengthen the implementation of MSN through an inclusive approach to ensure the public could fully benefit from science and technology through activities such as an interactive Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) exhibition, quizzes, workshops and a career fair, said Chang.
'I believe the MSN Carnival can not only spark interest in science among the younger generation but also bridge the STI gap through the involvement of various stakeholders, including educational institutions, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the community,' he said.

Touch ‘n Go, Proton Ink MoU To Equip New X50 With TnG RFID Tags

BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- Touch 'n Go Sdn Bhd (TNG) and Proton Holdings Bhd have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to equip every unit of the all-new Proton X50 with a Touch 'n Go Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) tag at the production stage. In a joint statement today, the parties said the initiative reflects their commitment to providing smarter and more convenient driving experiences for Malaysian consumers. TNG chief executive officer Praba Sangarajoo said the partnership will create more seamless experiences for customers, and make everyday mobility feel easier, faster, and more intuitive. Proton Edar Sdn Bhd deputy chief executive officer Zhang Qiang said the partnership with TNG aligns with Proton X50's tagline, 'Intelligence That Amazes', adding that the feature may be extended to include other Proton models. 'We aim to improve customer satisfaction, and we think this is one of the steps we can consider towards achieving that goal,' he said. The MoU was inked by Praba and Qiang, witnessed by TNG sales director Jarrod Wong and Proton Edar head of sales Ong Chee Wooi. Launched on July 24, the latest Proton X50 features a redesigned exterior and interior, updated connectivity technology and a 1.5-litre i-GT turbocharged engine. According to Proton, 2,000 units have been delivered to customers within three weeks of the launch, and over 140,000 units of the earlier X50 model have been sold since its debut. ASEAN Must Deepen Collaboration In Skills Training

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- ASEAN must deepen collaboration in skills training to meet the demands of the 21st-century economy, said Human Resources Minister Steven Sim. He said the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI), such as the newly launched ChatGPT 5.0, has confirmed fears that AI could replace conventionally trained personnel, diminishing the signalling value of academic degrees. 'In an age when AI can do the thinking, the world still needs those who can build, repair, operate, communicate, supervise, organise - these are human and social elements requiring skills, competence and trust.' He said this in his opening remark at the ASEAN TVET Conference (ATVET) 2025 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL), which was officiated by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also the National TVET Council (MTVET) chairman. Sim proposed three measures to strengthen ASEAN cooperation in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), namely sharing experiences in skills training, creating a common certification framework for mutual recognition and investing more in skills education. He said Malaysia, which spends about RM10 billion annually on TVET, has already opened its National Training Week to ASEAN participants, offering over 72,000 free training courses valued at RM400 million to 3.5 million people. 'Malaysia aspires for ASEAN to be one of the most skilled regions in the world… when the geo-economics is unstable and unpredictable, we must be committed to building the future now,' he said. Meanwhile, in a pre-recorded introductory speech, ASEAN secretary-general Dr Kao Kim Hourn called for TVET systems to become catalysts for innovation, inclusivity and productivity in the face of rapid digital and green transitions. 'The convergence of digital innovation and the green transition is reshaping our economies, industries and labour markets. TVET must evolve beyond its traditional role to become a catalyst for innovation, inclusivity and enhanced productivity,' he said.

No Malaysian should be left behind in AI growth

KUALA LUMPUR: Artificial intelligence (AI) development in Malaysia must be inclusive and ensure that every segment of society benefits, said Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo. He said that whether through cloud-based platforms for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) or AI-assisted diagnostics for remote clinics, such technologies must deliver tangible value to every Malaysian. 'Through various initiatives, we are empowering Malaysians to compete and lead in the global digital economy across numerous sectors, such as agriculture, education, healthcare, finance, and even tourism. 'However, AI-driven productivity must benefit every Malaysian, with no one left behind, and we must be inclusive and work together,' he said in his keynote address at the Huawei Cloud AI Ecosystem Summit APAC 2025, held in conjunction with the ASEAN AI Malaysia Summit 2025 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) today. The minister stated that building an 'AI nation' under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) necessitates strengthening infrastructure, enhancing security, and developing local talent, with collaboration playing a pivotal role in achieving these objectives. 'While we speak of infrastructure, security and talent, there is much we can learn from industry and our friends in the region and globally about how other countries, sectors and industries have developed,' he said. He commended Huawei Malaysia for its proactive role in shaping Malaysia's digital economy and developing local talent. 'The Huawei ICT Academy and its AI Talent Development Plan, for example, are nurturing a highly skilled, future-ready workforce equipped with industry-relevant expertise. I am pleased to note that Huawei Malaysia's AI-Native cloud infrastructure showcase, built in collaboration with local partners, exemplifies how collaboration can drive intelligent, sector-wide upgrades,' he said. He also emphasised the importance of governance and regulatory frameworks to ensure that AI adoption is safe and sustainable, particularly as the country becomes more dependent on data-driven infrastructure. 'If you build a country that is fully dependent on data and data centres, then we cannot afford to have a breakdown that impacts all sectors that rely on them,' he added. Gobind said the government must be prepared to adapt policies and legislation in line with new technologies while ensuring that safety and security are not compromised. 'The future is now. We need to start thinking today about how to build an ecosystem that will ensure that, in five years, when new technology is rolled out, Malaysia is ready for it,' he added. - Bernama
