Businesses warned to adhere to by-laws or face might of the law
TMPD is calling on local business members to obey the law.
This comes after businesses in Eersterust, Mamelodi, and Doornpoort were inspected on Monday and Tuesday, revealing many by-law violations.
TMPD spokesperson, Superintendent Isaac Mahamba, said the department, in collaboration with other stakeholders in the metro, conducted extensive operations on the two days.
He said, 'The main objective of these operations is to ensure compliance with the city by-laws.
'It was discovered that most of the businesses were operating contrary to their licenses, selling counterfeit, expired, and tampered food packaging products.'
This resulted in these businesses being issued with Section 56 notices, and the products being confiscated.
'Meanwhile, in Doornpoort, two well-known establishments were closed due to non-compliance,' he said, referring to businesses in the Doornpark shopping complex.
Mahamba added that the metro's building control department has discovered that certain residential properties are being extended without the metro's permission.
'Notices have been issued to the owners of these houses, giving them a 14-day period to respond to the violations,' he said.
He emphasised the importance of the owners becoming compliant within this prescribed time frame, to avoid further consequences.
He said, 'Failure to comply within the stated time frame will result in the municipality commencing the demolition process.'
'It is crucial for the owners to prompt action to avoid any further consequences.'
He closed by saying that TMPD Chief of Police, Commissioner YCR Faro, commended the members for their hard work and dedication to upholding the law.

Pretoria CBD car theft suspect denied bail
A 40-year-old man, suspected of vehicle theft, was denied bail at the Pretoria Magistrate's court on August 18. The case has been referred for further investigation. He was arrested at the corner of Paul Kruger and Visagie streets on August 15. Six alleged international rhino horn traffickers to appear in Pretoria court
Six alleged international rhino horn traffickers to appear in Pretoria court Six members of an alleged international rhino horn trafficking syndicate are expected to appear before the Pretoria Magistrates' Court today, August 19. The group faces charges of fraud, theft, and contravention of the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity (NEMBA) Act, as well as possible racketeering and money laundering charges. According to Hawks spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Christopher Singo, the group of five men aged between 49 and 84, and one woman, aged 60, handed themselves over to the Hawks investigation team at Sunnyside Police Station this morning. 'Their arrest follows a complex investigation by the Hawks' Wildlife Trafficking Section of Economic Protected Resources, under the Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit.' Singo said the investigation, which began in 2017, uncovered an elaborate scheme involving fraudulent permits allegedly obtained from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and Environment (DFFE). 'The suspects are accused of applying for permits to buy and sell rhino horns locally, while in reality the horns were destined for illegal international markets in South-East Asia,' he explained. Singo explained that the fraudulent permit scheme is linked to an estimated 964 rhino horns, valued at millions of rand. 'Further investigation revealed that the DFFE was allegedly defrauded by a well-designed scheme, designed by the suspects to traffic rhino horns, and participate in the international illegal rhino horn market,' he said. In South Africa, the rhino horn trade is permitted only between South African citizens with valid DFFE permits under the NEMBA Act. However, the horns may not be exported or sold to non-South African citizens due to an international ban. He said the suspects are expected before the Pretoria Magistrates' Court today. Police operations uncovers contraband in west schools
The Pretoria West police recently conducted a series of searches at various schools to curb bad behaviour among learners and clamp down on contraband. The station's Social Crime Prevention team, Gauteng Traffic Wardens and the station's Youth Desk Chairperson searched Lotus Gardens Secondary School, where various prohibited items were found. 'The search was focused on dangerous weapons, drugs and all prohibited items at the school premises. Items found were dagga, matches, and vapes. All the learners who were found with illegal or prohibited items were taken to the office for discipline,' spokesperson Constable Sibongile Vuma said. Vuma said the learners were reprimanded and their parents were informed. 'They were also reminded that dangerous weapons are not allowed at school.' The team also visited Die Heuwel Primary School because of of ongoing fights and bullying between learners in grades six and seven. The visit was meant to curb any misbehaviour before more serious cases involving bullying, gangsterism, and fighting become a reality. 'This comes after [an] incident of bullying that involved two groups of gangs in the school. The police instructed the learners to disband the gang groups with immediate effect,' Vuma said. The learners were warned not to start the gang fights again. 'We want to encourage the learners to create a safe, friendly and inclusive environment, where all learners will feel welcome, comfortable and respected inside the school premises. This will help them to learn from each other and to achieve good grades. They were also encouraged to report any kind of bullying to their teachers and parents,' Vuma added. The police had visited the school in May for the same issue; however, the purpose of that day was to educate the learners about bullying through drama.
