Morocco Showcases Digital Transformation at Regional ICT Congress in Jordan
Rabat – Morocco's progress in digital transformation took the focus on Wednesday during the regional congress titled 'Towards a Digitally Accessible Arab Region – ICTs for All 2025,' held in Amman, Jordan.
Safaa El Alaoui, Head of the Universal Digital Access Service at the Moroccan Digital Development Agency (ADD), presented Morocco's efforts and strategic roadmap to advance digital inclusion and public service digitalization .
The congress was organized by Jordan's Telecommunications Regulatory Commission in partnership with the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
El Alaoui emphasized that the ADD's roadmap supports the national strategy 'Morocco Digital 2030,' launched in September 2024. The strategy aims to boost the digital economy, encourage the development of local tech solutions, create jobs, and accelerate the digitization of public services.
Key pillars of the roadmap include modernizing public administration, enhancing interoperability between services, improving user experience, and promoting digital adoption among citizens, particularly vulnerable populations.
Morocco, she said, aspires to become a leading digital and tech hub in Africa, while ensuring inclusive access to digital tools. Among ADD's flagship initiatives is the national data exchange platform for public institutions, designed to streamline citizen access to digital services and increase administrative efficiency.
El Alaoui also highlighted the 'Digital Lab,' which supports rapid service digitization projects, and 'Dar Al Mouwatin,' a one-stop digital center providing essential e-services to citizens, especially in remote areas.
Further supporting digital literacy, the 'Academia Raqmya' platform offers training under the 'Digital Acculturation Pathway' to equip citizens with digital skills and knowledge of emerging technologies.
ADD is also working with ESCWA to develop a national digital accessibility roadmap aimed at promoting inclusive design standards across digital platforms, ensuring better access for people with disabilities and reducing the digital divide.
The two-day congress gathered regional experts and decision-makers to discuss digital inclusion, the potential of emerging technologies like AI, and ways to enhance cooperation for a more equitable digital society in the Arab world. Tags: ADDammanDigitaldigitalization in Morocco

Rabat — Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita welcomed his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdelatty to Rabat today, marking a significant step in their shared desire to strengthen the partnership between the two North African nations. 'Egypt has a presence in East Africa, Morocco has a presence in West Africa,' he said, urging better economic coordination between the countries. The ministers referenced existing frameworks, including the Arab Trade Agreement, the Agadir Agreement, and the African Continental Free Trade Area, as foundations for enhanced cooperation. The meeting addressed cultural dimensions, with plans to strengthen connections between intellectuals, journalists, and artists from both countries. Minister Abdelatty carried a written message from President El-Sisi to King Mohammed VI, underlining the personal leadership engagement. The countries' stance on regional pressing challenges On regional challenges, Morocco reiterated support for Egypt's water security rights, calling it a matter of Arab national security that must be resolved through dialogue. Meanwhile, both ministers condemned Israel's unrelenting assaults on Palestinians in Gaza. They voiced support for a two-state solution, calling for the establishment of a Palestinian state based on 1967 borders and with East Jerusalem as its capital. Bourita noted that Morocco and Egypt consult almost weekly before major regional commitments, positioning both nations as voices of wisdom that push toward solutions rather than inflaming tensions. Professor Anasse Bari: Morocco Should Create a University and Ministry for AI
Rabat – Moroccan professor and AI expert Anasse Bari has called on the Moroccan government to create a specialized university and a ministry dedicated to artificial intelligence. In an interview with Al Jazeera, Bari said these steps are necessary to help Morocco catch up in this rapidly growing field. The country needs to train young people in AI and create local solutions for education, health, transport, and agriculture, he argued, stressing that a dedicated AI university would help prepare Moroccan students to become global tech leaders. 'Governments must prioritize investment in artificial intelligence to ensure Arab students can enter the global competition and benefit from technological potential to prepare a new generation of thinkers, and to use AI in key sectors such as agriculture, tourism, and renewable energy,' Bari told Al Jazeera. Bari is currently a professor at New York University ( NYU ) and leads its AI and Predictive Analytics Lab. He has also worked as a lead data scientist at the World Bank and received awards for his teaching in the United States. A vision for Morocco's future As Artificial intelligence will shape the future of all nations in the coming years, Bari argued, Morocco must act now by establishing a national university and a ministry focused on AI, just like some other countries are already doing. He noted that Morocco has the talent, but it needs to build the institutions and support systems. 'Moroccans and Arab youth are talented and committed to hard work .. It runs in their blood. And as AI continues to evolve and spread, the demand for university graduates with specialized knowledge and skills in the field will grow,' the professor explained. He further urged Arab youth to build strong foundations in mathematics and computer science, and to use AI ethically. 'Despite its [AI's] huge potential, it comes with very important ethical considerations,' Bari says. He also noted the importance of having a national AI strategy, as other countries have already started working on long-term AI plans. 'This would be the best investment Arab countries have ever made. 'In these exceptional, sensitive, and difficult circumstances surrounding this important Summit, we must demonstrate sincere political will, guided by faith in building a common project, adherence to good neighborliness principles, and respect for states' national sovereignty and territorial integrity,' King Mohammed VI said in his speech, delivered by Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. The King's speech reflected Morocco's 'principle of non-interference in others' internal affairs and refraining from harboring separatist movements' as the basis of Arab countries' collective action for stability, security, and prosperity. Arab league reform is essential King Mohammed VI explained that Arab nations' meaningful progress requires completing the long-standing reform process of the Arab League. While pointing to organizational transformation as a prerequisite for effective regional cooperation, the King said that 'joint Arab action cannot be fully effective unless the reform of our Organization, initiated years ago, is completed in a manner that meets the aspirations of our countries and ensures harmony and concord.'
