Family who claims woman died months after drug treatment for skin rash settles action
The family of a restaurateur, who it was claimed died a few months after being prescribed a drug to treat itchy skin rash, has settled a High Court action. Poh Kwai Tan, a Malaysian woman known as Joyce Tan who lived in Dunboyne, Co Meath, ran five restaurants before her sudden death at the age of 47 in May 2020. Her husband Tuck Nam Au and their daughter Yen Ching Au of The Place, Dunboyne Castle, Co Meath, had sued GP Anas Mansour who practises at Main Street, Blanchardstown, Dublin, over his wife's death. The settlement is without an admission of liability. The details of the settlement are confidential. The family's counsel, Jeremy Maher SC instructed by Michael Boylan Litigation, told the court that the case had been settled after mediation. Counsel said Ms Tan's family in Malaysia were listening to the court ruling of the case by remote link. Last year, Dublin coroner Dr Clare Keane returned a verdict of death by misadventure. The inquest heard evidence that Ms Tan developed a syndrome – a very rare condition and complication also known as drug hypersensitivity syndrome – after being prescribed Dapsone to treat a rash on her body. Dr Keane said she had been unable to substantiate references in evidence that suggested the patient may also have taken some Chinese medicines for her skin condition. Family's claims In the High Court proceedings, it was claimed that in December 2019 Ms Tan complained of an itchy rash and went to a doctor who noted it might be scabies. In January 2020, Ms Tan consulted Dr Mansour in relation to her rash, and he noted it had not improved and she was unable to sleep due to itchiness. The doctor advised that it was necessary to repeat the scabies treatment. The rash covered Ms Tan's arms, upper and lower back. On February 12, 2020, it was claimed that Ms Tan was started on a treatment with Dapsone, which is a drug prescribed by specialists to tackle severe skin conditions. It was claimed that Ms Tan on April 4 attended a hospital A&E with worsening skin breakdown and abdominal pain and was noted to have abnormal liver function tests. Three days later a possible Dapsone Hypersensitivity Syndrome was noted and a liver biopsy was taken and other medication was prescribed for her. It was claimed she was further admitted to hospital on two occasions and on May 18, 2020, was transferred to another hospital for a possible liver transplant. Her condition continued to deteriorate and she was noted on May 27 to have liver failure, multi-organ failure and septic shock before she died three days later. It was claimed that a diagnosis of dermatitis herpetiformis was made without referring Ms Tan to a dermatologist and there was an alleged failure to monitor Ms Tan in respect of the effects of Dapsone. It was further claimed there was an alleged failure to advise Ms Tan of the risk of developing Dapsone Hypersensitivity Syndrome and of the symptoms. There was also, it was contended, a failure to advise Ms Tan of the requirement to discontinue Dapsone if she got any of the syndrome symptoms. All of the claims were denied. Noting the settlement and the division of the statutory mental distress solatium payment, Mr Justice Paul Coffey conveyed his deepest sympathy to Ms Tan's family.

'GP gave stepdad laxatives, but we knew something was very wrong'
Ronnie Haston was planning for retirement, but died two weeks after being admitted to hospital A devoted stepfather died from cancer after his symptoms were initially dismissed as constipation. Beth Hunt, 42, a nurse from East Calder, lost her stepfather Ronnie Haston to myeloma in April 2024, two weeks after he was admitted to hospital. Ronnie, who was just 68, owned a hearing devices business, and had always been active and healthy. He was making plans for his retirement, when he became suddenly unwell in March last year - but after a phone consultation with the GP, his symptoms were put down to constipation. "It was two weeks from admission to hospital until he died," said Beth. "He was fit and healthy, he had no underlying health conditions. It was a complete shock to us all. He didn't get to enjoy one day of retirement with my mum or do any of the future they had planned together. "It started with constipation, which the GP gave him laxatives for. He was really fatigued and had muscle pain. He just didn't look right." Ronnie was told he needed a blood test but would have to wait two weeks for it. At her wit's end, Beth's mum Anne took Ronnie to A&E. Tests there showed his kidney function had plummeted to just 14 per cent. He had extremely high calcium levels. He was eventually diagnosed with myeloma, a form of blood cancer which around 33,000 people across the UK are living with. Sadly, Ronnie passed away after two weeks in hospital. 'They'd said he would start chemo and they had a full plan,' said Beth. 'They said he would be a good candidate for a stem cell transplant. He ended up having two lots of chemo whist very unwell with pneumonia and then two days later he died. "He pretty much went into multi-organ failure. It's shocking, completely shocking.' She added: 'It's not people's fault, it's the system's fault. The catalogue of errors, the wait. We kept saying, 'He needs a blood test', but he couldn't get a blood test for two weeks. "In this day and age how is that acceptable? If somebody is unwell, you need the blood test now. Even in hospital, it was all too little too late. The big thing for me is educating GPs. "The symptoms of myeloma are sometimes non-descript and not obvious. You could put them down to muscle ache and being tired, but these should be red flags for a GP, especially in someone with no underlying conditions and having never been to a GP apart from with cellulitis from mosquito bites. "If Ronnie hadn't been so unwell by the time he got into hospital, he would have been in a better position to fight it." In honour of her beloved stepfather, mum-of-two Beth has decided to run the Edinburgh Marathon to raise money for Myeloma UK. 'I signed up to the Edinburgh Marathon on the evening of Ronnie's funeral," she said. "When I ran a 10-mile eight years ago, mum and Ronnie were my biggest supporters. They ran across Edinburgh to meet me at as many points as they could. It's my first marathon, but when I decide to do something I do it. 'I know I can do at least half but I'll probably have to push through the last six miles. I think of Ronnie and my mum when I run – the last year without him has been awful for her. If she can wake up without him and can put one foot in front of the other then I can take it one step at a time too.' So far, she has raised over £1,500 of her £2,000 target, and hopes to ensure that no other families have to go through the sudden loss of a loved one. Ronnie always was a strong presence in our family," said Beth 'I'd had him in my life since I was 19. You don't realise the impact someone had until you lose them. He was a gentle man. He was always someone you could lean on. He'd never judge, he'd always support you and just show up. If I can do anything to help other families then I want to do it. "Myeloma UK's support is totally invaluable and had Ronnie been able to live longer it would have been very useful to us. Life will never be the same without him. It is so cliche, but the reality is life is short and so precious. "I want to support other families; I don't want anybody else to go through this."

Health department shuts new Cedric the Entertainer barbecue joint. Will it reopen this weekend?
A new barbecue venture from comedians Anthony Anderson and Cedric the Entertainer is smothering honey-glazed pork ribs with gold sauce and piling smoked brisket onto potato buns with pickles and onions. Or at least it was for six days. AC Barbeque is located in a corner of the Westfield Century City mall's dining hall and held its grand opening May 7 but shut down on Tuesday. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health ordered the celebrities' restaurant to close, citing a lack of permitting. AC Barbeque 'opened without approval or permit,' a representative for the county health department told The Times in an email. A representative for the restaurant told The Times that the city of Los Angeles had approved the restaurant before its opening date, but a county official who visited AC Barbeque during its opening week shut down the operation, noting that its permitting application was incomplete. The AC Barbeque team has since resubmitted the permitting paperwork and hopes to reopen by the end of this weekend. The new joint venture serves as the first bricks-and-mortar extension of longtime friends and barbecue enthusiasts' TV show 'Kings of BBQ.' The A&E series follows the pair as they visit pitmasters across the country and explore the history, flavors and cultural influence on and stemming from the cuisine. Comedy veteran Cedric the Entertainer — whose birth name is Cedric Antonio Kyles — has appeared in 'The Neighborhood,' the 'Original Kings of Comedy' tour and 'Barbershop,' among other shows and films, while Anderson's decades of credits include 'Blackish,' 'Law & Order' and 'We Are Family.' The duo hope to highlight Black culture in their new restaurant, as they do in their show, diving into the community's contributions to barbecue. In the future, they hope to host specials from and appearances by guest pitmasters in Century City. Last year, AC Barbeque debuted a 'virtual dining' outpost within the campus kitchen of Mississippi's Jackson State University, and earlier this year, the brand launched a food truck at Howard University in Washington, D.C. In their Century City restaurant, they're serving sandwiches stuffed with smoked chicken, brisket or pork; smoked-and-fried wings with barbecue ranch; a variety platter; half-racks of St. Louis-style pork ribs; brisket and pulled pork by the pound; banana pudding; sides such as cornbread, mac and cheese, brisket baked beans and more. Read more: Cedric the Entertainer uses his punchlines to branch out and give back To help bring their vision to life, they tapped local pitmaster Burt Bakman of Slab and Trudy's Underground Barbecue. 'Hats off to our chef [Burt Bakman], the driving force behind every smoky bite that comes out of our AC Barbeque kitchen,' the restaurant posted to Instagram last week. Before its temporary closure, AC Barbeque regularly sold out of items; a manager told The Times that even with their smokers firing 24 hours a day, it's still hard to keep up with the demand for the low-and-slow-cooked barbecue. Guests filing in for a taste passed under a sign that says 'Welcome to the cookout,' and TV screens displayed menu items as well as photos of Kyles and Anderson. Behind the counter, rows of the restaurateurs' house spice rubs and bottles of barbecue sauces are available for those who want to bring a taste home. AC Barbeque is located in the Westfield Century City's Dining Terrace, on the second level of the shopping center, at 10250 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles. The restaurant plans to reopen with daily hours of 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sign up for our Tasting Notes newsletter for restaurant reviews, Los Angeles food-related news and more.
