California state senator accused of DUI cleared after blood test shows no signs of drugs or alcohol
A California state senator who Sacramento police accused of driving drunk after a car crash will not face criminal charges after lab results showed there were no traces of drugs or alcohol in her system, prosecutors announced Friday. Sen. Sabrina Cervantes (D-Riverside) was cited on suspicion of DUI after police interviewed her at a Sacramento hospital, where she was being treated after a car crash near the Capitol on May 19. At the hospital, Sacramento police questioned the state senator for hours and concluded she showed signs of intoxication and cited her. But in a statement, prosecutors said they reviewed all of the evidence, police reports, witness statements and laboratory results presented by police and decided not to charge her. Cervantes, 37, a first-year state senator, represents the 31st Senate District, which covers portions of Riverside and San Bernardino counties, and previously served in the state Assembly. "Based on our ethical duty and the burden of proof in a criminal trial, the Sacramento County DA's Office declines to file any charges in this case," the Sacramento County district attorney's office said in a statement. Prosecutors received the toxicology results from a blood sample taken after the crash that tested negative for "any measurable amount of alcohol or drugs," according to a statement from the district attorney's office. Cervantes' dealings with Sacramento law enforcement began after her SUV was T-boned by another vehicle. She left the scene around 1:30 p.m. and received a ride to a hospital, where police eventually showed up and questioned her. The officers who interviewed Cervantes said she refused a field sobriety test and they "observed objective signs that led them to believe she may have been impaired while operating a motor vehicle," the department said in a statement. Cervantes strenuously denied driving while impaired after news of her citation became known. 'The accusation that I was driving under the influence is utterly false,' she said in a statement after the citation. 'The Sacramento Police Department's accusations are unjust and hold no truth.' Cervantes' office then released redacted medical records from her treatment at a Kaiser Permanente hospital in Sacramento. She said the report shows there was no alcohol or drugs in her system. Her vital signs and behavior were not irregular either, she said. Cervantes' office did not immediately respond to requests for comment about no charges being filed against her. Cook County felon caught with 4 loaded guns in Naperville detained until trial, prosecutors say

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - A Cook County convicted felon accused of illegally having four loaded firearms on him during a traffic stop in Naperville will remain in custody ahead of trial, authorities said. What we know Marcus Carroll, 30, of Calumet City, appeared in court last weekend on one count of unlawful possession of a weapon by a repeat felony offender, a Class X felony, and one count of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, a Class 2 felony, according to the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office. The charges stem from a traffic stop shortly after 2 a.m. on May 24, when police say they observed Carroll's vehicle commit multiple traffic violations. During a search of the vehicle, officers allegedly found a loaded Glock 43 under the driver's seat, which was "immediately accessible," prosecutors said. A partially unzipped backpack on the back seat contained three more loaded firearms: a Glock 23 modified to fire fully automatic, a Springfield Hellcat 9mm, and a Glock 19 9mm. One of the weapons was equipped with a 50-round drum, according to the state's attorney. Carroll was taken into custody at the scene. What they're saying "The safety of DuPage County residents remains the top priority of my office," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said. "With a history of multiple felony convictions, including armed robbery with a firearm and vehicular hijacking, Mr. Carroll is legally prohibited from possessing a firearm. The allegation that he was in possession of four loaded weapons, one with a fifty-round drum and another that had been modified to allow it to fire fully automatic, are extremely troubling. Once again, I commend the Naperville Police Department for their vigilant and observant police work that has again led to the removal of dangerous weapons from our streets and quite possibly prevented a future tragedy. I also thank Assistant State's Attorneys Heather Misura and Anna Derkacz for their work in securing charges against Mr. Carroll." "This incident exemplifies the proactive efforts of our officers in identifying and addressing individuals who pose a serious threat to public safety. Reward offered in search for man accused of trying to kidnap woman in Orange County
The Orange County Sheriff's Office is reaching to the public for help tracking down a person of interest in an almost two-week-old case. The sheriff's Office says Crimeline is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the man pictured above. Investigators say on the morning of May 11, this man stole a 4Runner, then tried to force a woman inside it shortly after. Investigators say the man drove it several times past a woman who was walking her dog near Adanson Street and Lee Road. That woman said the man blocked her, then pointed a gun at her and told her to get in. The woman ran, and the man drove away, the sheriff's office said. The 4Runner was later recovered, but the man remains at large. He was caught on camera where the vehicle was taken. He is shown to have black hair and an average build, and may have a tattoo on his left forearm. 'It's our land' — Zelensky responds to Putin's call with Trump, Russia's Ukraine ceasefire demands

President Volodymyr Zelensky on May 19 rejected Vladimir Putin's demand to withdraw Ukrainian troops from four partially occupied regions, after the Russian president held a call with U.S. President Donald Trump and once again failed to agree to a full ceasefire. "It's our land, we won't withdraw our troops from our territory... it means that they don't want peace… if they demand what they know we won't agree to," Zelensky said at a press briefing attended by the Kyiv Independent. The comments come after Putin held a phone call with Trump, during which he continued to refuse to agree to a full ceasefire, stating he is prepared to negotiate a "memorandum regarding a potential future peace treaty." Russia's maximalist position in the negotiations remains unchanged and requires "eliminating the root causes" of the war, Putin added. After the conversation, Trump said on Truth Social that Russia and Ukraine will "immediately start" negotiations toward a ceasefire and an end to the war. Trump took office 118 days ago promising to end the war in Ukraine within 100 days. "The conditions for that will be negotiated between the two parties, as it can only be, because they know details of a negotiation that nobody else would be aware of," Trump added. Putin's foreign policy aide, Yuri Ushakov, told Russian journalists that the presidents spoke for two hours and five minutes, and a ceasefire deadline was not mentioned. A source in the President's Office told the Kyiv Independent that Trump and Zelensky spoke twice on May 19 — once before the scheduled call with Putin and again after it. According to Zelensky, during his phone call with the U.S. president, he advocated for a ceasefire, the opportunity to express views on the memorandum, and for decisions regarding Ukraine not to be made without Ukraine's involvement. Zelensky also said there would be a "strong EU sanctions package," though he didn't say when it would be imposed. He added Ukraine was expecting "when they see fit, the U.S. to impose sanctions on Russian banks and energy sector." "This would be an important, strong mechanism," he added. The calls follow days of largely inconclusive negotiations in Istanbul, where Russia sent a delegation of low-level officials and reiterated sweeping territorial demands, including that Ukraine accept the loss of Crimea and four eastern regions. The second conversation between Zelensky and Trump lasted for over an hour and included Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, French President Emmanuel Macron, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Council President Antonio Costa. Zelensky also said that Kyiv is exploring the possibility of a meeting with delegations from Ukraine, Russia, the US, and the EU in Turkey, the Vatican, or Switzerland. Trump on also claimed on May 19 that Russia is interested in engaging in large-scale trade with the United States once the war ends. "There is a tremendous opportunity for Russia to create massive amounts of jobs and wealth. Its potential is unlimited. Likewise, Ukraine can be a great beneficiary on trade, in the process of rebuilding its country," he said. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov described the phone call between the two presidents as "productive" and highlighted Trump's "neutral" stance on the war. Speaking to reporters, Peskov said, "Trump's position is neutral and he does deal with settlement issues, while the position of European politicians is openly pro-Ukrainian." The U.S. president's approach to negotiations frustrates European allies, many of whom sought his support for a joint U.S.–EU ultimatum demanding an unconditional ceasefire starting May 12 and tougher sanctions on Moscow. Despite Russia's refusal, no new U.S. sanctions have been imposed so far.
