3 Chargers players who must improve in the second preseason game
The Chargers decimated the Lions' backups in the preseason opener to the tune of a 34-7 blowout. There were plenty of standouts for Jim Harbaugh's squad, but also a few duds. Let's look at who needs to step up in the team's second preseason game this weekend against the Saints. LB Junior Colson The Chargers desperately need Colson to become the player they drafted him to be. The 2024 third-rounder played just 218 defensive snaps across 11 games, and he hasn't shown much progress throughout the summer and into the preseason opener. It was a positive step to see him on the field frequently, but now he needs to demonstrate more activity at the second level of the defense. Defensive coordinator Jesse Minter noted that Colson could be more aggressive on the field, so we'll see if that translates on Sunday. CB Ja'Sir Taylor Taylor has the most to lose in this group. While he has had some impressive moments at training camp, the veteran is in an all-out fight to make the 53-man roster. Undrafted free agents Nikko Reed and Myles Purchase were impressive in the Hall of Fame Game, which doesn't bode well for Taylor. Not to mention, Taylor wasn't exactly stellar in his own right either. At this point, he seems to be behind the rookies in the pecking order and needs a few solid preseason performances to stay in Los Angeles. WR Tre Harris Don't worry, Harris will be on the roster no matter what. With that being said, he will have to show more in the preseason if he wants to see immediate playing time. That holds particularly true after the signing of Keenan Allen earlier in the week. While Allen provides leadership and depth to the wide receiver room, it will also come at the cost of someone else's playing time. As of now, that person looks to be the second-round rookie, Harris. He was held without a catch on just one target. Now, none of this is to say there should be concerns about Harris, as he will get more comfortable as his first season goes on.

Trey Lance and Taylor Heinicke are competing for the backup quarterback job behind Justin Herbert. The official depth chart lists Lance OR Heinicke as the No. 2. Lance started the Hall of Fame Game, and Heinicke will get his turn Sunday against the Saints, Eric Smith of the team website reports. Lance played 47 snaps in last week's victory over the Lions, going 13-for-20 for 120 yards and two touchdowns before turning it over to DJ Uiagalelei. Heinicke did not play. The Chargers acquired Heinicke in a trade with the Falcons a year ago, and he had mop-up duty in four games last season. He re-signed with the Chargers this offseason. Heinicke has appeared in 42 games with 29 starts with the Texans, Panthers, Commanders, Falcons and Chargers. He has thrown for 6,663 yards with 39 touchdowns and 28 interceptions.
