Arc de Triomphe winning trainer Barry Hills dies
Horse racing trainer Barry Hills, who financed his career on the back of the winnings from a huge gamble in 1968, has died aged 88 after a long illness. HT Image A head lad at a stables at the time of his successful punt Hills won more than £60,000 after backing Frankincense to win the Lincoln. He went on to become one of England's most successful trainers. Hills trained over 3,000 winners, most notably Rheingold, who ridden by Lester Piggott won Europe's most prestigious race the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in 1973. He trained the winners of the English 1000 and 2000 Guineas as well as the oldest classic, the St Leger, but fell just short in the 'blue riband' Epsom Derby, Rheingold beaten in the 1972 edition by Piggott on Roberto one of four of his runners to finish second. He enjoyed a long association and friendship with some of the most powerful owners including Robert Sangster for whom he trained two-time Ascot Gold Cup winner Gildoran and Sheikh Hamdan al-Maktoum. Hills' son Richard rode the late Sheikh Hamdan's 2000 Guineas winner Haafhd in 2004 and 1000 Guineas victor Ghanaati in 2009. Richard's twin brother Michael was also a successful jockey. "He was a remarkable man who led the most extraordinary life," said Angus Gold, who was racing manager to Sheikh Hamdan from 1985-2021. "What's more, he did everything himself from his sheer canniness and ability. "He was a driven character and you'd have to be to have the success he did like he did." His ability was not just confined to the flat. He trained Sangster's Nomadic Way to win the 1990 Irish Champion Hurdle and the 1992 Stayers Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. Hills, who had his voicebox removed in 2008 after being diagnosed with throat cancer in 2005, never lost his love for the sport even after retiring in 2011. He took over the reins for a second time when his trainer son John died aged 54 of cancer in 2014, having acted as his assistant another of his son's Charlie has forged a successful training career. Hills influenced many trainers as last year's Arc de Triomphe winning handler Ralph Beckett attested to. "As a trainer and a man he was an example and a hero to all of my generation," said 54-year-old Beckett. pi/ea This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

Legendary trainer Barry Hills passes away aged 88
Barry Hills, a legendary figure in horse racing and one of the most successful trainers of his era, has passed away at the age of 88. Hills began his illustrious career in 1969 and by the time he hung up his training boots in 2011, he had trained over 3,000 winners. His remarkable record includes two victories each in the 1000 and 2000 Guineas, a St Leger triumph with Moonax, and a Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe win with Rheingold. The Hills legacy extends beyond Barry, as his sons Michael and Richard, both retired Classic-winning jockeys, have made their mark in the sport. Charlie, another son, took the reins at the family's Faringdon Place yard and has celebrated numerous big-race wins. His eldest son, John, was also a successful trainer before his death from cancer in June 2014, with the pair memorably battling it out in the 1994 Leger, when Moonax fended off Broadway Flyer by a length and a quarter. In a post on his X account, Charlie Hills said: 'Gone but will never be forgotten #dad.' A statement from the British Horseracing Authority read: 'All of us at the BHA are saddened to learn of the death of Barry Hills and send our deepest condolences to his family and friends at this sad time. 'Barry's contribution to racing was immense and he will rightly be remembered as one of the great figures of our sport.' Before taking out his training licence, Hills rode nine winners as an apprentice and spent 10 years learning his trade as head lad with John Oxley before striking out his own, saddling his first winner La Dolce Vita at Thirsk in April 1969. His first Group One winner followed in 1971 while Rheingold's Arc victory in 1973 provided consolation after being beaten just a short head in the previous year's Derby – one of four Epsom runners-up for Hills, who never managed to land the blue riband. Newmarket proved a happier hunting ground though, with Enstone Spark (1978) and Ghanaati (2009) landing the 1000 Guineas, while Tap On Wood (1979) and Haafhd (2004) prevailed in the 2000. While Epsom Derby glory eluded him, Sir Harry Lewis won the Irish version in 1987 and he also bagged the Irish Oaks and 1000 Guineas twice during an illustrious career. Hills announced his retirement in August 2011 after overcoming serious illnesses, including throat cancer, but he did make a brief return to training on a temporary licence in 2014 following the death of George.

The 55-year-old made his fortune as a professional punter FILLY YOUR BOOTS Billionaire Premier League owner, 55, earns huge win after 12/1 bet on Royal Ascot winner BILLIONAIRE Prem owner Tony Bloom is coming home from Royal Ascot a few quid richer. The Brighton owner - who is estimated to be worth £1.3bn - watched his nag Venetian Sun go in the Albany Stakes. 3 Tony Bloom had a winner at Royal Ascot on Friday Credit: PA 3 The Brighton owner's horse Venetian Sun romped to victory in the Albany Stakes Credit: Alamy 3 Bloom's nag drifted to 12/1 this morning before going off at 7/1 Credit: PA Bloom, who has the Seagulls since 2009, has been nicknamed the "Godfather of Gambling". The former poker star started his own betting consultancy firm Starlizard, which now turns over around £100million per year. Bloom co-owns Venetian Sun alongside Starlizard's Head of Football Ian McAleavy. The filly was given a poor draw in Stall 1 under Clifford Lee in Friday's opening race. The two-year-old filly romped home under Lee, netting legendary punter Bloom a windfall after placing a "decent bet". Bloom told Sky Sports: "7-1 looks a good price now, and she was 12-1 this morning as well. "Given the confidence [trainer] Karl [Burke] gave us, we had to have a decent bet. "We had the worst draw in stall one and things didn't necessarily go right for her in the race, but she still won easily. "I might be a bit biased but I'd like to think she's shown something special there. Moment Royal Ascot racegoers hurl punches in vicious brawl in front of shocked punters "We'll leave it to the boss [on her next race], but we're looking ahead to next season and to a potential 1000 Guineas, so that would be something really to look forward to." Following Friday's race, victorious trainer Burke added on Venetian Sun: "She's a special filly. "I was gutted we got the draw that we had and to be honest, she's won despite that because it's not really the way we like to ride her – loads of daylight. "She's got a great turn of foot and she can get in amongst them and use it. "She'll stay further, I think six or seven, she's got a great chance next year of being a Guineas filly but we'll enjoy today and plan for the future."
