Circle Centre is a ghost town, but these US malls are thriving. See the 10BEST malls voted for by readers
Circle Centre isn't currently the thriving mall it was hoped to be when it opened in September 1995, but believe it or not, some malls throughout the United States are still frequented by shoppers. USA TODAY readers voted on the top ten malls in the U.S. from a list nominated by 10BEST editors and a panel of experts. Here's what to know about Circle Centre, which is currently under redevelopment, and which malls readers still consider to be worth the visit across the nation. Hendricks Commercial Properties, the developer behind the Bottleworks District on Mass Ave, announced plans to redevelop Circle Centre Mall as a mixed-used property in December 2023. The company plans to transform the space into retail, housing, office space and entertainment venue. The tentative plans include open-air space from Georgia to Washington Streets, including public green space. Story continues after photo gallery. Redevelopment of the property officially began in April. The mall has been a part of the downtown landscape since 1995. According to a Circle Centre Preview, aired on Channel 6 at the time, and now available on YouTube, the mall originally had space for 100 tenants including restaurants, retail and entertainment. At the time of publication, only 32 businesses are listed on the Circle Centre Mall directory. "There are hundreds upon hundreds of indoor shopping malls throughout the U.S., but which among them is the very best?" Here's what readers picked. The USA TODAY 10BEST Readers' Choice Awards highlight the very best in travel, food + drink and lifestyle. Every week, USA TODAY 10BEST invites a panel of industry experts to nominate their favorite points of interest and attractions across a wide range of categories. 10BEST editors then vet these nominations and select a final set of nominees to be presented to the voting public for a period of four weeks. Top 10 American malls thriving in the age of online shopping
Remember malls? They're still out there. For decades, the big, air-conditioned wonderlands were the place to be, with shop after shop of fresh new items, a packed and diverse food court and often a movie theater. You met friends there, took your family, saw the new fashions, spent the day, or just sat and people-watched. Malls have been suffering since online sales — where retailers don't have to cover the costs of renting space in a brick-and-mortar building — took a huge bite out of their revenues. An average of 1,170 shopping malls closed every year between 2017 and 2022 in the United States, according to Capital One, and no new indoor megamalls have been built since 2006. But there are plenty of malls that are thriving, and USA TODAY has ranked the Top 10. "With diverse selections of stores to choose from, tantalizing restaurants in the food court, inspired entertainment options, and special events and seasonal activities that bring their local communities together, shopping malls are vibrant hubs that offer plenty to enjoy," USA TODAY's 10BEST said in the ranking released last month. The winners were chosen by USA TODAY readers, from a list nominated by 10BEST editors and a panel of experts. So, where did "America's Mall" land on the list of favorites? The Mall of America takes second place The Mall of America may just be the most famous mall in the entire U.S., but it just missed out on the top spot in the 10BEST ranking. The iconic building sits south of Minneapolis in Bloomington, Minnesota. It is four stories tall and home to upwards of 500 stores, according to its website. Latest brand expansions: Chuck E. Cheese opens 10 new retro-style arcades: See locations Shopping isn't the only activity at the Mall of America. Shoppers can also enjoy a theme park. Nickelodeon Universe has more than two dozen rides, coupled with gift shops and food stands. Foodies can get a bite at the mall as well, with restaurants like Rainforest Cafe, Margaritaville, Bonchon and Noodles and Company. The Mall of America is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, according to its website. What are the Top 10 malls in the U.S.? Northeast Ohio river ranked No. 2 in the nation for fly fishing. See the list
Fly fishers rejoice! Ohio is a prime destination for the sport. The Rocky River on the west side of Cleveland ranks second on USA TODAY's 10BEST list of fly fishing rivers across the country. 'The Rocky River offers some of the finest fly-fishing opportunities in all of the Buckeye State,' according to USA TODAY's 10BEST Readers' Choice Awards. 'In spite of its short length, the region is famed for its bounty of steelhead trout, providing anglers with an opportunity to catch fish all year round.' Rocky River, a Lake Erie tributary, flows through all or parts of Cuyahoga, Summit, Medina and Lorain counties. 'Rocky River currently supports a significant steelhead trout fishery as well as native stream fisheries for a diversity of fish species,' according to the Cleveland Metroparks website. 'The year-round fishability of the Rocky River has been enhanced by the steelhead fisheries as well as a stock and catch trout fishery in upstream segments of the river.' Rocky River is located just west of the Cleveland area, emptying into Lake Erie between the cities of Lakewood and Rocky River. Fly fishers use specialized equipment that allows them to imitate different types of bait. "Fly fishing gets its name from the lures used. They're referred to as 'flies' because they're made to imitate small insects or prey items that a fish may want to eat," according to the National Park Service website. "Flies are usually made out of materials like yarn, sewing thread, feathers, fur, and a single hook. Flies also range in size from as small as a grain of rice to the size of a 10-inch fish." In addition to its supply of steelhead trout, the river's popularity is also attributed to its closeness to Cleveland's populous suburbs. 'The Cleveland Metroparks provide excellent public access along the Rocky and its branches, and several fords along the river force migrating steelhead to pause in their upstream movement, creating excellent fishing opportunities,' according to Orvis Fly Fishing Reports. 'During the summer months, the Rocky provides excellent warm-water fly fishing opportunities for smallmouth bass, carp, and panfish.' Here's the full list of the top 10 best fly fishing rivers: Au Sable River (Michigan) Rocky River (Ohio) Nantahala River (North Carolina) South Fork Holston River (Tennessee and Virginia) Kenai River (Alaska) Snake River (Idaho and Wyoming) Spokane River (Idaho and Washington) Madison River (Montana and Wyoming) Youghiogheny River (Maryland and Pennsylvania) Grande Ronde River (Oregon and Washington) This article originally appeared on The Repository: Ohio's Rocky River ranked No. 2 in the nation for fly fishing

Shell yes! What SWFL beach made USA Today's 10BEST list
One Southwest Florida beach made another list for being among the best in the state. In USA Today's 10BEST Readers' Choice Awards for 2025, the national news publication rated Bowman's Beach on Sanibel Island as the No. 6 beach in Florida. "The allure of Bowman's Beach, located on Sanibel Island, Florida, lies in its tranquil setting and the chance to go shelling along its expansive white sand coastline," USA Today wrote. "With amenities such as picnic areas, restrooms, and hiking trails, it's an ideal spot for families and nature enthusiasts alike." The 10BEST Beaches in Florida: 1. Delray Beach 2. Clearwater Beach 3. Treasure Island Beach 4. Lauderdale-By-The-Sea 5. Stuart Beach 6. Bowman's Beach 7. St. Pete Beach 8. Siesta Beach (Siesta Key) 9. Destin 10. Anastasia State Park (St. Augustine) Bowman's Beach is in the heart of shell collecting, making Sanibel unofficially known as the "Seashell Capital of the World." Sanibel Island is home to more than 250 species of shells, littering its roughly 15 miles of sandy beaches with millions of treasures ranging in size and color. Thousands travel to the island every year. Sanibel is a barrier island so it sees more shells on its beaches compared to others around the county, experts told the News-Press three years ago. And Sanibel is one of the very few islands in Florida that run perpendicular, which causes ocean currents to have the beaches primarily flush water downward. USA Today asked a panel of experts to nominate their top picks, then readers voted to determine the winners. The News-Press is part of Gannett, which publishes USA TODAY and more than 200 local news sites nationwide. Hurricane recovery: All of Sanibel's beach parking lots are now open.
