Sheikh Joaan hosts Qatar handball team in Kuwait following historic Arab Cup victory

The 25–22 victory over Bahrain on Sunday marked Qatar's first-ever Arab Cup title in men's handball. The final was held at the Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Indoor Sports Complex and capped a dominant run by the Qatari side, which completed the tournament with a perfect record. The championship, hosted in Kuwait from May 5 to 11, returned to the regional calendar for the first time since 2002, featuring nine participating nations divided across three groups. Qatar advanced from Group B after defeating Kingdom of Saudi Arabia 31–22 and edging Tunisia 31–30. In the semifinal, they overcame Egypt 25–19 before closing out the tournament with a hard- fought win over Bahrain. Sheikh Joaan commended the players and coaching staff for their discipline, consistency, and character throughout the competition, describing the performance as a point of national pride and a reflection of years of investment in the sport. Several emerging players were instrumental in the campaign, offering further evidence of the QOC's long-term commitment to athlete development. Joining Sheikh Joaan at the reception were Ahmad Al Shaabi, President of the Qatar Handball Association; and Jassim Rashid Al Buenain, Secretary-General of the QOC. Handball has long been one of Qatar's most successful sports, and the Arab Cup title adds to a growing legacy that includes continental and global achievements. The victory in Kuwait was especially significant, not only for its historic nature but for the promise it revealed in a team that blended experience with rising talent. The return of the Arab Championship after more than two decades was seen by many as an important platform for regional competition. Manama: Bahrain's handball team clinched a spot in the semi-finals of the 10th Arab Handball Championship following a 36-32 victory against Egypt. The championship is currently being held in Kuwait and will continue until May 12. According to Bahrain News Agency, Bahrain had a commanding lead of 20-14 at half-time and sustained their edge throughout the second half with effective defensive and offensive strategies. This win secured their position at the top of their group with a total of 4 points. Hassan Mirza was instrumental in the victory and earned the title of player of the match for the second consecutive time. His performance was pivotal in ensuring Bahrain's advancement to the semi-finals, where they are set to compete against Kuwait on Friday.

Thanking political leadership For his part, President of the Arab Handball Federation of Saudi Arabia, Fadel Al-Nimr, thanked the political leadership in Kuwait, led by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Kuwait government and the people for this generous hosting of the tournament, which is the second for Kuwait after 46 years. In his speech at the opening of the tournament, Al-Nimr also appreciated Minister Al-Mutairi's patronage of the tournament and the diligent efforts of the Kuwait Handball Federation to organize it professionally, which is not surprising for Kuwait, which possesses outstanding sports and administrative competencies, expressing his happiness that this tournament coincides with the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Arab Handball Federation in 1975. He stressed that the Arab Federation, throughout its history, has organized many championships at several levels for men, women, teams, clubs and several age groups with the aim of developing the game, adding that the Federation will continue to organize Arab sports championships to make further progress in this game. The organization of the Arab Handball Cup in Kuwait was praised by the heads of Arab federations and officials of the Asian Handball Federation, where everyone agreed on the good professional organization by the Higher Organizing Committee and the committees working in the tournament, which confirms Kuwait's position and experience in hosting such major tournaments.
