Kota Kinabalu: The 11th Sabah Games (Saga) this year scheduled to start on October 11 in Tawau is unlikely to clash with the upcoming 17th Sabah state election. Assistant Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Fairuz Renddan said although the election date has not yet been finalised, he is confident that discussions will be held to avoid any clashes. Advertisement It is understood that some of the competition venues in the district may be unavailable if the election is to be held around the same period. 'We are not sure (of the election date), but we will leave it to the Chief Minister to decide when the election will be held. 'However, if the election is to be held earlier, then it will not disrupt the date,' he said this after attending the group draws for eight team sports in Saga at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) here on Tuesday. He also said preparation for the Games is going smoothly and urged representatives from all the districts to take advantage of the biennial games. 'It is important for the athletes to use Saga as their preparation for the next Sukma and we want to see more new records be set at the meet,' he added. Some 8,000 athletes and officials are expected to participate in the seven-day meet with a total of 23 events to be competed with taekwondo and futsal as the latest addition and there will be 232 gold, 232 silver and 339 bronze medals at stakes. Meanwhile, among those present at the draw ceremony were Youth and Sports Ministry permanent secretary Datuk Mansur Asun and Sabah Sports Council director Asneh Mohd Noor. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? KOTA KINABALU (July 15): The 11th Sabah Games (SAGA), scheduled to take place in Tawau from October 11 to 17, will proceed as planned despite uncertainty over the timing of the 17th State Election. Assistant Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Fairuz Renddan gave the assurance, saying discussions would be held with Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor to ensure the Games run smoothly. 'We're not sure … that's up to the Chief Minister to decide when the election will be. But if it's held earlier, it won't interfere with the Games. 'God willing, there will be discussions with the Chief Minister so we can avoid any clashes,' he told reporters after officiating the SAGA XI Team Sports Group Stage Draw at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) on Tuesday. Hajiji had earlier confirmed that the State Legislative Assembly sitting on July 7–8 was the final one for the current term, although he did not disclose when it would be dissolved. The assembly is set to dissolve automatically on November 11 if not done earlier. Fairuz said Tawau is ready to host over 8,000 athletes and officials for the state's premier multi-sport event. 'I believe all the teams are ready and, from the main organising committee's side, everything is already in place. We are just waiting for the date,' he said. The assistant minister also witnessed the draw for team sports including football, futsal, netball, basketball, sepak takraw, hockey, volleyball and rugby. A total of 23 sports will be contested in SAGA, involving 30 district contingents — including new additions Sook and Paitan. A total of 232 gold, 232 silver, and 339 bronze medals will be up for grabs in the biennial event. 'I would like to advise the athletes and teams to give their utmost best in SAGA, and hopefully more records will be set. 'More importantly, this is not just about the Sabah Games — we are also preparing for the next Malaysia Games (Sukma),' he added. Also present at the ceremony were Ministry Permanent Secretary Datuk Mansur Asun and Sabah Sports Council (MSN Sabah) Director Mohd Asneh Mohd Noor.

Published on: Wednesday, June 11, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 11, 2025 By: Ibrahim Tabir Text Size: Describing the announcement by Safa Kunak President, Dato' Sri Anil Sandhu (pic), who resigned on Sunday, Citra said he was 'not surprised' by the president's withdrawal. KUNAK: Citra Masadi, who used to be the Deputy President of Safa Kunak, said he stepped down from his role in the local football body over a year ago. Describing the announcement by Safa Kunak President, Dato' Sri Anil Sandhu, who resigned on Sunday, Citra said he was 'not surprised' by the president's withdrawal. Advertisement Anil made a statement last Sunday while attending the final match between Mostyn FC and Uncle Chang FC at the Kunak town field, organised by Safa Kunak. 'I resigned from the position of Deputy President earlier, in March last year, and after that, the district Safa continued to be managed by the existing committee members,' said Citra to the Daily Express in a brief message on Tuesday. Citra, however, did not elaborate further on the reasons for his action but noted that the development of football, particularly the teams in Kunak, has been deteriorating over the past year. Recently, Kunak ranked fourth in the men's team football qualification round for the Tawau zone in the 11th Sabah Games (Saga-XI) 2025. Meanwhile, there are rumours that the Treasurer and a Vice President of Safa Kunak have also stepped down from their roles. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
